Goodbye Oregon Football

Has there ever been a self imposed penalty that harsh?

Big I don't recall it if there was...But IMO if Oregon doesn't get ahead of this thing fast, it will be UGLY when the NCAA gets into their punishment..Might be time to bite the bullet if you're a Duck fan..JMHO

Believe it or not, I kinda admire your optimism.

Or you could be delusional. :)

The funny thing is...I'm more pessimistic than most Duck fans about this.

If I had to guess, we'll get some moderately severe sanctions, but Kelly well retain his job, albeit with a very short leash.

Kelly's a goner.

Calhoun at UCONN is the only coach to survive anything near this bad

Gene Chizik?

That isn't over by a long shot. Why do you think he insisted on the 'I still get paid even if found guilty of violations' clause in his new contract?

Chizik is still being investigated.

jg has it right, Calhoun is the only coach ever in a revenue-generating sport to get in this level of crap and survive; and Chip Kelly doesn't mean 10% as much to UofO football as Calhoun means to UConn basketball.

The only thing left in question at this point is the NCAA's expedience and how much more dirt Yahoo! sports can dig up. He's done.

He will not be gone at this point next year. I'd put money on that.

Much less got Pete Carroll to "resign".
Kelly is done. Whether it's before the season starts or a year from now, he's done.

Again, the 'AA taking their sweet ass time in spite of getting the case on a silver platter is your only hope.

You do seem to be a bit more pessimistic than most Duck fans, though, I'll give you that; the overwhelming opinion seen on fb here is that Kelly and the rest of the staff are still 100% legit and in the clear here, and Lyles is just trying to drag his name through the mud for some reason I still have yet to hear.

Yup. Can't wait to see the clueless look on Duck fans faces when he gets canned and seasons get vacated. Although it's more likely that most bandwagon fans will bail and we'll go back to seeing more USC, ASU and UDub fans in Portland than Ducks.

SI article:

Yes. But, you didn't post this part of that article:

Oregon spokesman Dave Williford, fielding an SI.com request Friday to speak with Mullens, said, "Rob and the athletic department stand by our original statement" that the school "[has] and will continue to work with the NCAA on this matter." He told Yahoo!, "We believe we did nothing wrong."

That may still be true by the letter of NCAA law. Even after Lyles' admission that his recruiting materials were a sham ("I gave them, like, old stuff that I still had on my computer," he told Yahoo!), even after reading about the lengths he went through to help James become academically eligible and to manipulate Seastrunk's family situation so that he could sign with Oregon, it's unclear what, if any, NCAA rules were broken. The role of figures like Lyles is a relatively recent development of which the NCAA is only now trying to get a handle.

jesus kelly himself sent the guy letters thanking him for his help in planning the recruiting visits. that in and of itself is a major ncaa violation. there is no gray area here. And if kelly thought he wasn't doing anything wrong why orchestrate the coverup?

There is a lot of gray area. It's not clearly defined when an act is considered aiding the coaches and when it's not. That line is made hazy by the fact that helping the recruits is allowed but is often of mutual interest to the athlete and program recruiting them.

as for cal, we at least seem to have our ass covered and unlike oregon we didn't renew his recruiting service the year after he gave us the info we requested. Tedford isn't some drunk dumbass like kelly.

That's right. He's just a cheater on the field who lets one of his assistants take the fall for him. A real class act there.

Who would ever think that a guy who teaches his athletes to fake injuries would ever do something over the line in recruiting? :birgits_giggle:

This is what we like to call denial.

What is it that you think that I'm denying?

Sounds about right

Whatever it is, it wont be good

Those in Oregon blowing this off is in for a rude awakening

I don't think many are blowing it off. But, I would be surprised if it ended in worse penalties than USC received.

I dont see Chip Kelly saying

"I dont know this Willie Lyles that you speak of"

as cooperation

See, the NCAA can use his statements to the Oregonian reporter against him. Plus, all the phone calls that were made to Lyles, even after Kelly said that they had distanced themselves from Lyles, the man he had earlier claimed he did not know.

I'm not sure how much weight the NCAA will give Kelly's comments to the local shock-jock.

This is direct involvement by the Head Coach. No ifs, ands, or buts. Far worse than what USC did, or OSU, or UT Basketball.

Involvement in what specifically?

Bama got probation and almost the death penalty because a booster in Memphis paid a handler for a player. Ever heard of Albert Means.

Albert Means was paid to play football. Unless there is new information we aren't aware of, no athletes in this story were paid to play anywhere. Lyles denies that he was paid to steer players to certain schools.

Oregon is toast

Maybe. We'll see.

Irrelevance will be like that old comfy pair of shoes in the back of the closet.

Maybe the one he gave in the interview?

He says that he's upset that he hasn't been paid a second $25k.

Regardless of what Kelly did or didn't do, i hope the NCAA bans leeches like Lyles from every aspect of college football.

It's like I almost forgot Tennessee is a top ten all time program for a second.

Looking forward to five or so years of Duck fans being put in their place.

Hope they get a TV ban. We all will get a break from those schitzophrenic unis.
