Couple of weeks ago, Dearstone was giving Jeff(?) grief about liking so many different teams. In listing teams he followed, Jeff mentioned something about the Hartford Whalers. The following ensued (as close to verbatim as I can recall):
Dearstone: the Whalers?! How do you like the Whalers?!
Jeff: I liked them since they were (insert NHL team that I cannot recall here).
Dearstone: See, I don't like that, either.
Jeff: What?
Dearstone: When a team moves but keeps its former nickname that has nothing to do with new city - because it doesn't apply anymore. Like the Jazz in Utah.
Jeff: But Hartford is on the Atlantic Ocean...
Dearstone (interrupting): That's my point, the former (Canadian) city is not on the Atlantic
Jeff: Actually they are.
Dearstone: Is it still the Atlantic Ocean up there (off the eastern coast of Canada)?
Jeff: Yes, it is.
Dearstone: Well, that still doesn't help your case because there aren't any whales in the Atlantic Ocean.
Jeff (and others) then goes on to correct Dearstone, only to immediately and profusely apologize for having done so.
Of course, Dearstone (and undoubtedly each of his employees who co-anchor the show) would deny that he was serious, as he does each time that he makes some ignorant comment and gets it handed to him on the air. But he was quite serious.
