Mickey Friggin Dearstone...

Couple of weeks ago, Dearstone was giving Jeff(?) grief about liking so many different teams. In listing teams he followed, Jeff mentioned something about the Hartford Whalers. The following ensued (as close to verbatim as I can recall):

Dearstone: the Whalers?! How do you like the Whalers?!
Jeff: I liked them since they were (insert NHL team that I cannot recall here).
Dearstone: See, I don't like that, either.
Jeff: What?
Dearstone: When a team moves but keeps its former nickname that has nothing to do with new city - because it doesn't apply anymore. Like the Jazz in Utah.
Jeff: But Hartford is on the Atlantic Ocean...
Dearstone (interrupting): That's my point, the former (Canadian) city is not on the Atlantic
Jeff: Actually they are.
Dearstone: Is it still the Atlantic Ocean up there (off the eastern coast of Canada)?
Jeff: Yes, it is.
Dearstone: Well, that still doesn't help your case because there aren't any whales in the Atlantic Ocean.
Jeff (and others) then goes on to correct Dearstone, only to immediately and profusely apologize for having done so.

Of course, Dearstone (and undoubtedly each of his employees who co-anchor the show) would deny that he was serious, as he does each time that he makes some ignorant comment and gets it handed to him on the air. But he was quite serious.

It may be the worst sports talk show I've ever heard. The funny thing is that I've never talked to anybody that thought otherwise.
You would be hard pressed to find a worse stretch of sports talk radio in the country than the days where Griff follows Dearstone in the morning.

Can't stomach them either.

The only semi-decent programing the Sports Animal has is when Mike Strange is the co-host of the show that is on from 10-12. Everything else is horrid.

back during fb season, he made some comment about oregon athletics - something like they drag down the average gpa or grad. rate of the pac 10 .. whatever ..

Heather spent the next 15 minutes calling him out on it while the worm squirmed ... :eek:lol:

Dearstone and company are horrid. If I made as many mistakes at my job no way would I last more than a week. I am Mike and Mike all the way in the AM. The rest of that station is pretty weak. If you like to laugh or just want some really poor insight, then check in on it.

I actually like John Wilkerson; he does a good job. Hyams is tolerable at times but the callers are so bad.

Not necessarily agreeing with the premise, but she is the longest tenured coach in Knoxville and her name is on the court. Having a good relationship between the two basketball coaches can only be a good thing.

She can find out like the rest of the free world. Mike Hamilton and the UTAD don't owe her jack. I know that's hard to swallow for many because they worship Pat. But they don't owe her a thing.

And don't get me started on the name on the court.

As far as I am concerned, Cuonzo can go take a dump on the word Summit as long as he wins

Don't disagree but not sure someone in the men's athletic dept calling to tell her has anything to do with the type of relationship the two coaches will have.

It doesn't. This argument from Mickey is solely based on the fact that he's mad that the announcement was made on a day that the LV had a game.

Guess he's afraid folks would watch the press conference and forget to take a can of soup to get a ticket, or stop by a Pilot and grab a ticket.

Is on a rant this morning because Pat Friggin Summitt was not given a courtesy call to tell her we hired Cuonzo. Of course he's also bleeding from the rectum over his Lady Vols taking a backseat from the Monday PC.

This guy's stupidity is off the charts.

I wish I had remembered that they lost which meant he would have been in a mood today and listened.

Dangit.

We'll agree to disagree. The UTAD owes Pat plenty - she's the best ambassador the AD has.

Crying over her not getting a call about the new coach is petty - but no need to not recognize the good things Pat has done representing the university. I'm not a Pat worshipper, but I'm not ignoring the success she's had.

At this point more basketball fans, men and women, nationwide know who Pat Summitt is than Cuonzo Martin. And it's not even close.

Ambassador or not, winning in a "sport" where five to ten programs actually compete is not something to go crazy over. I'm still waiting for anyone to prove what she has done to strengthen the men's athletic department. not enough to warrant naming a 20,000+ seat arena floor after her.

She had nothing to do with this hire. Her office will be near Cuonzo's. She can become acquainted shortly.

As long as the men's athletic department keeps handing that big check over to the women every year i suggest people involved with the women's athletic keep their mouth shut about how the athletic department handles things.

sorry but no one owes Pearl anything. He's getting a pretty sweet deal as it is

I just meant in that her salary skyrocketted when he started getting raises and that was only to match what he was making w/out any other justifiable reason.

As for any other reason, no, they don't.
