Speculation and supposition. Blah, blah, blah. Lots of people just want to think the worst.
Let me give you a viable alternative working theory. TT didn't need GJ to say anything about UT at all. All he needed was for someone to tell the recruit, "yes, I liked playing for Trooper; he was a straight shooter." After that, TT has credibility to say whatever he wants about UTK because he's a "straight shooter" and he had first hand experience working here.
I swear to God some people get their whole self worth from crapping on other people on Internet message boards based on nothing more than idiotic gossip. LAME!
The fact that the kid is defending his call and he claims he doesn't know how it originated is enough. He obviously is in a position that he doesn't need to be. Fine bash people for bashing him but it's a dumb spot he put himself in.

That being said. I am not sold on the fact that the call was a surprise.According to GJ, all he did was answer a phone call and speak honestly to the caller. Anyone who wants to make more of it than that without specific proof is a drama queen.
Are YOU going to be a drama queen and perpetuate all this nonsense hysteria? Only you can decide.
How many surprise phone calls from people you dont know (besides wrong numbers) do you get on your cell phone?
Sometimes I get a call from someone who has been given my number by someone else. It's not out of the realm of possibility. If I were GJ, and someone called me and said, "Hi, this is Gabe Wright. Trooper Taylor asked me to call you," I guess I'd listen.
Too bad GJ said he had no idea how GW got his number.

What difference does it make? If the guy said, "Hi I'm Gabe Wright and I have questions about Trooper Taylor," I'd still listen.
Honestly, have you people never made a cold call? Do you really have no idea about how to get someone to talk to you on the phone?
It seems that some folks just want to assume the worst about others because it makes them feel better about themselves.

don't agree at all on the prized recruit thing and the Fulmer cup is irrelevant
Again -- apparently the last witness Trooper Taylor wanted to call in making his case that Gabe Wright should pick Auburn over Tennessee was a player who had just finished his career at Tennessee. A player who had publicly said nothing but good things about Dooley, UT, etc. Do you really think there's a chance Taylor makes that conversation happen if he's not pretty sure ahead of time what Jones is likely to say?
It sure seems a little late in the game to be saying, "Hey, just so you know you can trust me, I'd like to talk to a guy who will give me a character reference....and who just happened to finish up his career at the other school you're thinking about." At the very least, Taylor had to know ahead of time that Jones wasn't going to say anything good about UT or he never would have put him on the phone with Wright.

TT taking such a chance seems at odds with everything I have heard about good recruiters.
Many. Hi, I am ______, I just want to talk with you has never worked.
How would assuming he threw UT under the bus make someone feel better about themselves?

It doesn't take a genius to assume that GJ could not, with a straight face, sell UT base on his experience here. It was chaos. If I were TT, I'd have told Gabe Wright to call Gerald, ask about me, and ask whether GJ felt like Tennessee has put him in the best position to showcase his skills to the pros. You could make that gamble without conspiring with GJ before hand, no problem. I'm willing to assume that GJ tried his best to paint a positive picture of UT, but it must be tough for him to pull that off given the well-known circumstances. Just because TT used GJ doesn't mean that we should assume anything negative about GJ or his motivations. Some people want to act like he sold nuke secrets to Iran, and that's just foolishness. Seriously, unless there is some hard evidence, some folks need to just get over it. Find something more productive to do than slag a kid on the Internet based on supposition.
This sounds as much like rationalizing the kid is innocent as your up in arms that people are rationalizing he's guilty. I don't need to perpetuate anything because GJ already put out there all that most people need to know. That he miraculously received a cold call from a recruit about TT, who he praised. I'm calling BS on recruiting calls that materialize out of thin air that have a large portion of their purpose being about another teams recruiter and nothing you rationalize or post is going to offset that.
You and GJ can fein innocence but truth is the nature of that call Which GJ, again GJ explained is garbage. What he said we can debate or not debate there is little debating that it happened and the source or inspiration for the call.

You serving up his miracle call defense is what's fueling posts on this thread. Ever considered that. You have people responding to your assumptions of innocence. They aren't making up new accusations just showing why the current ones make a lot more sense to them. Why not poll our coaches and players to see if they believe GJ is just a swell guy giving swell advice about another teams coach?

So...you enjoy bashing people that bash people on the internet? Is that what this is all about?"Miracle" call? Somehow all these pages of unchecked vitriol are my fault? Nice try, Karl Rove. Just admit that you enjoy bashing people on the Internet. It makes you feel good. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.
