World Cup Soccer........Boring as H*ll

I don't like soccer; but I generally understand it and can get what teams are doing. That said, I actually enjoyed the game because my Jingoism knows no bounds. Hell, I watched curling religiously a few months ago.

how dare you enjoy a 1-1 game

and you watched women's curling didn't you?

The last game I watched intently was the 2006 World Cup final, and with the amount of money I had on it, you'd have paid attention too.:p

That said, the diving is absolutely disgusting. How the bloody hell am I supposed to take soccer seriously when a handcheck leads to someone throwing themself on the ground, rolling around, and screaming, only to be miraculously healed when no penalty is forthcoming? The fact that no one seems to give a damn about it simply means that this disgraceful display is an accepted part of the game. Were I in charge, a player requiring medical attention or a stoppage in play would be done for the half. Chronic divers need to be suspended.

I must admit I've been watching more soccer since my daughter played this spring. I played when I was younger so I understand the rules. As BPV pointed out it is basically hockey on grass without the violent hits, although some tackles can be pretty dramatic.

Americans aren't into hockey like the rest of the world for a number of reasons. We like faster paced games, love the physical aspect of our sports. We also just aren't exposed to it as much of the rest of the world is, much fewer people play soccer in the US, it would be somewhere around 4th or 5th. Our best athletes simply aren't involved in the game like they are other places.

Hockey is substantially faster than any other sport in the world that doesn't involve the internal combustion engine. The average speeds achieved during the All-Star fastest skater event are between 25-30 MPH, which also includes a start from a dead stop and turns, plus the fact that the fastest players aren't usually All-Stars either.

For the sake of comparison, Usain Bolt's fastest recorded speed average (in prime starting position and running in a straight line) is less than 24 MPH.

It's just not a made for TV sport IMO. Hockey is much more excitingand even it struggles with TV transition.

Why does it do so well on television in the rest of the world, yet hockey struggles everywhere but Canada?

Generally, people find soccer exciting. The US is the exception.

actually I have seen quite a few yellow cards in this WC for players diving. Maybe not enough but they are trying. And yes there is some over-acting but a cleat to the achilles does hurt

NZ vs. Slovakia. very sloppy game so far. NZ's goalie is lucky that his missed kick didn't result in a score for Slovakia.

I've already said it. Limited competition, people identify with their favorite players and they are personally invested in the outcomes. Could happen here, bur our options make for better TV, so penetration will be virtually impossible.

I remember Freddy Adu was supposed to energize soccer fans in America. We see how that turned out

to put the success of US soccer on the shoulders of a 14yo isn't the best idea. And I never thought he was seen as a savior anyway

I think there's a pill for that now, though.

I would watch soccer just to see the horrendous dives
