I wish they had either Golden Goal or Silver Goal. At least that avoided some shootouts.
I don't hate shootouts like most do, though. At some point in soccer, you just need a winner, and if this is how it's done, then it's fine by me. Better than away goals in 2 game legs, in my opinion.
I understand not liking shootouts, but I can't understand why everyone likes the away goals tiebreaker. I don't see how teams can tie 1-1 and 0-0 and then it's determined that one team did better.I hate it but accept that in international tournaments, there isn't a better option. I like the two leg option much better but that would be impossible to implement in a tournament like the World Cup.

Exactly. Personally, I enjoy watching soccer in short doses, but I can see why it drives people crazy. What's wrong with saying soccer is boring? People say that regularly about baseball, golf, auto racing, hockey, etc.
I don't get my panties (knickers?) in a wad if people say it about other sports. It doesn't say anything about Americans if most don't like soccer anymore if than it says about Germans if most aren't NASCAR fans.

I think the biggest issue is that most Americans would feel they're "conceding" to world feelings towards soccer and instead relish our American invented sports of US football, baseball (even though both truly originated in England) and basketball.
That and US Soccer is erratic... at best. Honestly, if we are more 2002 than 2006 I feel that will go very far in helping soccer gain more popularity here.
Not really. We've become accustomed to fast paced with scoring or hitting. Soccer simply isn't as ready made for TV viewing. One need not understand the "intricacies (I laughed)" to "appreciate" the beauty. It's hockey, only slower and with less hitting. The ball control is impressive, but it's just not enticing for most Americans when our football is as exciting as it is.

Soccer looks like a pile of mush if you don't know what's going on. It's as simple as that. Most Americans don't know little if anything about soccer and therefore it looks boring. Baseball, to me, moves along *far* slower than soccer does.
The only point I agree on is the comparison with hockey... and only a little. It would help soccer's popularity here in the states if the players weren't such p*****s. The US goalkeeper played an entire match with a broken rib, so at least our players seem to be tough.
The ADD excuse is quite thin and even more disparaging.
Just as long as the soccer haters realize that they are being close-minded and stubborn by refusing to give it a chance. It IS the most popular sport in the world without question. I really think some people are too ADD to pay attention to something for more than ten minutes at a time. The scoring argument is lame, because a 14-7 football game would still be considered a fun-watch. Maybe if soccer threw in timeouts so the players could take a breather, and the viewer could watch a fun little commercial with bright colors everyone would like it more.
