I'd argue that's because it's good exercise. And that is something more Americans definitely need.

I would not agree that it's for a love of the game... and most youth players have a very very vague understanding of the game.

I don't eat Benji or Seattle Slew either. Nor do I participate in arranged marriage, even though now that I have kids it doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Comparing low scoring football to low scoring soccer is bordeline crazy. Collisions are part and parcel to the game and it's why people go.

The closed minded argument is almost as ridiculous. Acting as if Americans aren't open to things that entertain them makes no sense whatsoever. It might mean that there are some who just can't stand soccer and don't need a psychoanalysis in that regard.

I'd argue that's because it's good exercise, extremely cheap to set up and relatively easy to understand for kids. I would not say that it's for a love of the game... and most youth players have a very very vague understanding of soccer anyway.

I would say that if you got down to the honesty of it... a good percentage wouldn't want to be caught watching a "dainty european boy sport".

I have no issues with people who can't stand soccer. Personally I don't like sports like MLB and Nascar but there are plenty that do. Difference is I don't feel the need to jump in and constantly take shots at those sports like the soccer detractors do.

Agreed. Don't know why, but part of it tgat somehow soccer fans tend to initiate the debate with something about world's most popular or baseball sucks etc. The chip amazes me. This case a poster went out of his way to bash soccer and responses are warranted.

At least the issue I was debating was not if soccer is popular in the US... it's more along the lines of why it isn't.

A lot of the reasoning for why most people don't like it is pretty thin. I don't understand that pacing excuses as soccer is 45-50 minutes of non-stop playing. A 50 yard cross executed perfectly is only rivaled, to me at least, by a 50 yard bomb pass hitting a receiver in stride. Even if neither nets a goal/TD they're both exciting to witness due to the difficulty of the maneuver.

+1 I will watch a World Cup soccer match before I will watch NASCAR or a MLB game that is not the World Series.

I just don't buy this argument.

Many of the defenses of soccer in this thread are as overstated as the OP.

I played in HS and have a decent understanding of the rules and strategy but just don't get much out of watching a match.

The 50 yard cross you're comparing to a bomb doesn't makes sense to me. The kick 45 of them per game and eventually find a spot where the D isn't and someone gets a head one almost by accident. The pass is thrown with intent to a single receiver and if not on the money results in a wasted play. The wasted plays are part and parcel to soccer, so they do it over and over.

Finally, who are you to dictate reasons people can't stand soccer. I can't imagine that people need approval to dislike anythig.

It's just not a made for TV sport IMO. Hockey is much more excitingand even it struggles with TV transition.

Are you saying that collisions are not a part of soccer? I seriously have to question how many games you've watched if you really think football is a rougher sport. I've played both sports and got a lot more injuries playing soccer.
I don't think it is ridiculous to point out how some people aren't open to things that don't interest them. The opposite of open-minded is defensive. Having said that, would you not agree that most people who don't get soccer are emphatically critical of it? I've never heard anyone show indifference towards the sport. Those who don't know much about it somehow have passionate feelings of hatred for it. Not everyone is going to like every sport. I just don't understand those who try to rip soccer, when they obviously don't know what they're talking about.
I don't know a lot about hockey, but I'm a big sports fan, and I watched almost every game Team USA played in these last olympics. As a sports fan, how do people not get that these soccer players are running 8-10 miles per game, they are using insane creativity on lots of these set-pieces and other plays, it's a very rough sport, and the games aren't interupted by annoying commercial breaks.
If you don't like it, that's fine, just keep the comments to yourself. It only shows off your ignorance.

It's mostly this. It's not just disliking it... it's the overt criticisms of it that, generally speaking, have little or no base. It's almost an arrogance that many Americans have towards soccer because it's so popular and they don't understand it... so they hate it.

Also, in regards to the cross/pass comparison, I said: "for me." If it doesn't make sense to you, just disregard it.

Hockey is 10x better live. Soccer would be more interesting if you could see all the action away from the ball on TV. It would also help people understand the strategy a little more.

I don't hate the sport. I do dislike the idea that a historic match like the US/England can end in tie, and that I know of that possiblity before I turn the TV on. Maybe they could just go to an OT system of strictly corner kicks, and arrange it like the college football overtime rules.

I likes me some corner kicks.

Why doesn't the same apply to those that are fans? This thread reads like people with big chips on their shoulders.

The defense of soccer sounds like Vandy fans explaining why they really do belong in the SEC :p

They go to an OT system (penalty kicks) after the Group Stage is over. That's how England got eliminated in the 2006 World Cup against Portugal.
