So, I was thinking today that we have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the season--Tennessee has the ability to outperform last year.

1. Offense
I find it hard to believe that whether Sims or Bray is the starting quaterback, that either one of them will be worse than Crompton was during the first half of last season. The offensive line wasn't exactly a strong point at the start of last season. While it will take some time for the guys to gel this year, I think that they will be okay. Everyone knows the story in the backfield. As far as our receiving corps goes, we have two seniors starting, plus Teague who got experience last year and Stocker (who is NFL caliber). Two years ago we saw what freshmen receivers can do (see Julio Jones and AJ Green), hopefully Da'Rick and Hunter can be half as productive as freshmen.

If Chaney was a big part of the offense last year, I'm confident that he will have the guys ready. Plus, this will be Chaney's second year calling his system at UT. All of last year's guys know the system, regardless of whether they actually got on the field last year or not.

2. Defense
Last year's injuries may turn out to be a blessing. The front seven should be much improved this year. Sure, we lost big Dan, but we will have more depth overall in the front seven; especially, if some DTs come to play this season. Most of our DBs saw the field last year too. Having Janzen quarterbacking the secondary will be great. I can't forget Justin Wilcox calling the shots. Monte had to adapt to the college game, whereas Wilcox knows nothing else. His schemes looked solid at Boise St. He's beaten the spread and old-school offenses. He'll have those guys ready to play, no doubt.

3. Special Teams
Michael . . . Palardy!!!

Now, am I saying that we will win 8 games? No. But, I don't think its out of the question. The defense and running game will have to carry us through the first 4 or 5 games, but I think we will be alright. Who thought we would have even had a shot at 9-10 wins last year?

Go Vols!!!

We have a good team whether anyone wants to admit it or not. If we get decent QB play OR decent offensive line play we will win 8 games. If we get both we will win 10.

Great thread.

If Dooley can get this team 3 victories in the month of September and avoid Key injuries then there is no reason we couldn't get 8 or 9 wins.

It is good Chaney is still here, even though the system is different, it isn't a huge difference from last year.

QB and Oline are vital...if they are good we can win 9, average we can win 7, terrible and we could only win 4 or 5.

GO VOLS!

Matt Simms will likely be the starter and he isn't in Crompton's league.

I love how you failed to mention the loss of Eric Berry in your section about the defense. Wilcox may turn out to be good, but he's no Monte Kiffin any way you try to spin it.

Well you just never know. We could pull off an upset when we play Florida. they are going through alot of changes as well. Oregon is going to be tough but overall I think we have a good chance at starting the season 2-1.

Are Alabama, Florida, and LSU going to forfeit? If not, UT has no chance at 8 wins this year.

Sorry man, you need to lay off the Orange kool-aid....I'd be willing to bet we don't win more than 7 games.....don't get me wrong I'd love to see 10 wins.....it's just not possible with our lack of depth.

SSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Everyone ignore the thread jacker!

I think that Wilcox will turn out to be the greatest young D coordinator in the Game!

Our Dline will be nasty, SEC Qb's are going to running for their lives! I also think our Corners are going to be better this year than last, much more athletic.

I'm just trying to save those expecting 8 or more wins from disappointment when we end up with no more than 5.

No, he'll be better. Wilcox has already proved he can beat the spread...Monte? Not so much....

And what if we win 8 games? or even 7?...we do have a chance at every game we play..just like every team we play has a chance to beat us

Once Vols upset Oregon in September they will be on their way to an 8 win season and a springboard to a BCS bowl in 2011!!!!!

The only team that defended Florida better than UT did last year was Alabama. Funny how everybody instantly forgets that as soon as that staff leaves.

Not going to lie Monte did do a great job on FL last year.

Auburn, Ole Miss, Va Tech...not so much.

I have faith that Wilcox can scheme against the spread just as well as Monte did in that Florida game.

OREGON WILL BE DEFEATED IN NEYLAND IN SEPTEMBER!
