The Bruce Pearl opinion thread (merged)

Are you in favor of the job Coach Pearl is doing with the Vols?

Reading through the thread, it's funny to see how many people's arguments include "look at how UT basketball was before."

I don't measure success based on the Jerry Green era. Success should be measured in championships. I want to be comparing the teams UT is fielding to Kentucky, not the Vols of the Buzz Petersen years.

yes, agreed......but real success takes time.......you can't build Rome overnight, unless you cheat like H$LL.......and even then, it's unlikely.........do u think Kiffin in 4 years wins the Nat'l title?? And this is an established football school over the past 90 years or so........UT BBall always Sucked!! Just give it time, patience, and positive support.......if Pearl keeps coaching and recruiting like this, then we will be fine.....

You never answered.

3. To answer the several who asked, anything less than an Elite 8 this year would be a disappointment, and if he cannot get Chism and Tyler Smith into the NBA it will be an indictment of his player development given that both have the talent and ability. Excuses will be given that Wayne has asthma and Tyler is a classic tweener, but when Tyler was at Iowa no one was saying he would have difficulty making an NBA roster. Both guys should be able to find spots in the league if they play to their potential this year.

If you legitimately have a reason that reading is tough, please let me know so I will never make fun of you.

The hatred for pearl is loud and vocal but small. No more than 4 to 6 posters on here who really hate him. Those people are mainly followers of a bitter ring leader who thinks bruce pearl is the worst because on the personal pearl got divorced, on recruiting because he lost selby while he was coaching his son in israel and mainly because he turned in illinois for cheating.

Some are also mad that the pump brothers talked about pearl as a possible coach at other schools.

There are lots of fans like me who love pearl but who are concerned that we cannot press against skilled backcourts. A case in point is todays game.

I do not think tennessee can do better than pearl and I am very happy to have him. If he can get to an elite 8 this year and develop tyler smith and wayne chism to put both in the nba, no one will be left to hate him except complete nutjobs

Who are the pump brothers?

Maybe I'm missing something. Multiple posters have referred to "Elite 8 money" or "Final Four money" that CBP is making. How does his salary compare to other NCAA and SEC basketball coaches? I know he's the third highest paid in the conference, but I don't have info on the rest of the NCAA. I'm sure that a poster on here (especially one crowing about Pearl's overinflated salary) has this info.

CBP can recruit well, this is evident and not really debatable. I believe that much of the Bruce animosity is rooted in what some call his "gimicky" game schemes.

Many critics may want to see the generic, sleepy style of basketball played around the country because it meshes with how they coach and were coached.

CBP's methods definitely aren't congruant with the way I was coached, but I sure as hell get a much greater entertainment factor from UT basketball than any other team in the country win or lose.

But hey, I just watch the games for their entertainment value, not to live vicariously through athletes of a university I love or gain personal justification through victories of a team I have absolutely no control over.

Well, it does appear that CBP is in the top 10 on salaries. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect final four appearances with that level of pay.

How dare you say that! Tabrams, Neyland Law, and a slew of others will be along to berate your lofty expectations shortly.

I understand that with big pay comes big expectations, but some act as if his salary comes out of their taxes.

I know that many of the UT basketball purists expect immediate final fours and what not, but I think one of the most powerful statements of CBP's efficacy is the growth of the fanbase at large.

I am confident that the increase in popularity of UT basketball will yield on-court results via better players taking notice and choosing to play for the Vols.

If CBP can start putting guys in "the league" consistently, even better results will come. This is easier said than done though.

What do you see that you like so much (i.e., player development, half court offense, team play, discipline, ability to draw up and have his team execute plays when the game in on the line and you absolutely must make the basket, etc.)?

Or is it [insert Larry the Cable Guy voice here], “well, uh, we win more now than we did before”

He has done an excellent job at UT. The games are exciting and we have become a national player under his leadership. His most glaring weakness is in half-court offense. We do not execute well and seem to play well offensively only when we are able to score off turnovers or fast-break baskets.

Of course everyone wants to win the tournament. The question is what expectations do you place on Pearl and when do you hold him accountable, especially for the money he is paid.

It seems there is some here who are just happy to make the tournament and as long as he does that they will defend him until the end; and call anyone who expects more “miserable”.

There are others who expect him to go deeper than he has proven he can. They are tired of getting bounced early.

Which are you?

That's a huge assumption. Speaking for myself, I am not "happy" with getting bounced early from the tournament ever year. I do expect UT to go further in the tournament than the Sweet 16. But to call for giving Bruce the boot b/c he hasn't advanced past the 2nd weekend of the tourney is ridiculous. No one has ever done that at UT, no one. It is a huge hill to climb. I believe we are getting there. And there is no need to be screaming every time we slip a bit. I understand criticism, and I'm glad that we expect a lot from our coach. I expect great things from this team and from our coach, but I understand that things happen, and it takes time to build a perennial top 10 program.

Show me one (1) legitimate post that has called for Pearl to get booted?

I don't care if they break dance while coming down the floor. Tourney results are the measuring stick.

Teams that go deep in the tourney and teams that win the tourney generally play good half court offense, play good defense, play disciplined, have a coach that makes in game adjustments, etc. (play what you call “generic, sleepy style of basketball”)

I don't have time to weed through them, but there were several posts suggesting as much over losing Selby & the NCAA tournament record. But if that's all you got out of my post, then you missed the point. Just b/c some people aren't griping, doesn't mean we are satisfied with early NCAA tourney exits.

Curious; how many years until you expect it?

Show me one where someone called anyone who expects more “miserable”.

X2 on the whining. One would think UT was a traditional power on the level with NC, Duke UK, Kansas---ect. Vols are not-------never have been. Get over yourselves and be happy with an exciting competitive team. Must be something personal----jealousy? I mean we have all seen Bruce's young wife---huh? 90% of Vol fans are very happy with BP. That tells me something about "The legion of the miserables"-----CJM.

Your turn. :hi:

"Search" is your friend. It takes sceonds.

I read your post. I thought it was very good and I feel similarly. The get the “boot” comment caught my eye because it seems that people who fawn over Pearl would love nothing more than to lump people into that category in an attempt delegitimize their opinion.

Well said. I might have lumped people together there a bit. I did some searching, and I found some posts that suggested that Pearl was lucky to still have his job, etc, but no outright "he should be fired" comments.

I read through 5 pages of this, but would like to through in my 2 cents worth.

I agree that Pearl's teams have struggled against teams with good guard play, where they can easily break our press. But so do most teams.

When we played Louisville in the tourney, I realized that when you get to the sweet sixteen level, you find more complete teams. Ones that are top to bottom very capable players. We have tried to beat people with balance, but our balanced teams have still not been as talented as their balanced teams. Our weaknesses then become exposed.

The only way to overcome this is by recruiting.

I think we are now on the verge of taking care of this. All or most of our recruits are top 60 talent - as of this year. Remember when getting one top 40 player on the team made us think we were big-time?

I think we are getting there, but it was a long climb. Even next year, with a bunch of freshmen contributers, we may struggle in the tourney, but with consistent recruiting we should be able to avoid the highs and lows, and just now be able to be consistent elite eight contenders.

There is almost always an element of luck to getting there every year. I have been a fan since the seventy's, and I can only remember a few teams who made it through the NCAA's by winning every game by greater than 15 points. UCLA comes to mind. Houston once, although they lost in the finals. Having said that, I think the goal is to consistently get to the elite eights. Maybe, just maybe we are ready to start that run. Even Mears wasn't able to do that, but I think Pearl is on the verge.

And yes, it is just a vocal few on here that have some agenda against Pearl. The VAST majority know that we have something special going. Don't let these guys fool you.

Actually, Mears didn't win a single game in the NCAA tournament. Pearl has, hopefully, gotten us to where we will be a yearly participant in the tourney and will get hot at the right time and make a long run--hopefully this year.
