'10 JUCO QB Cameron Newton

There's also the problem that Newton wants the guarantee that he will be the guy from day 1. Our staff believes in competition and Cam isn't interested in that.

You have lots of real and/or perceived reasons why this marriage would not work. Just like many others on Volnation, you don't want him. Fine. I'm just saying there has to be some level of mutual interest remaining, even if it is just a backup plan for both parties.

I wanted us to offer him for the longest time, but, after stepping back and looking at this big picture, it just seems like it'd be in the best interest of both parties for him to go to MSU. He has great raw talent, but that doesn't necessarily translate into great production and/or wins.

Count me as one who finds a lot of irony in a massive thread about Cam Newton.

After constantly harping about wanting to run a cleaner program than UF, where does the desire come from for a guy who was booted from their program for theft?
Show us a link where he STOLE something...how about some court documents to prove he was cited or convicted of such.

I was high on Newton early, but after seeing some of his highlights on Blinn's youtube page...I was like..."Damn...we gotta be downright stupid not to offer this guy."
I noticed on his Rivals page, that he went to HS in Atlanta...assuming he has family still there, I can see why Cam would want to come here instead of KSU or MSU...about a 2hr drive to Knoxville for his folks

Newton has the total package, if Vols don't sign him, we will be lucky to go 6-6 next year. Bray will not be ready to play next year, dont think he would mind signing Newton for 2 years, but bringing in Rees, might possibly piss him off enough to look elsewhere. Bray needs to redshirt, put on some weight and get adjusted to college life and east coast. Bray is definately better than Rees and commited to Vols, why do something stupid to piss him off? Newton will make Vols a serious contender next year, Rees does what?

fyi

I come back over and check out the Cam Newton thread occasionally because I checked out one of his games this year at Blinn. Believe me, I am no QB talent evaluator, just a fan that has watched a lot of college football over the last 30+ years.

But what I witnessed on the field at Blinn, Holy cow...Man amongst boys.

The most impressive thing to me was something he gets criticized for on here - his passing was deadly accurate that day.

This may not matter. I think Cam is 100% about who can help me get to the league.

Rees adds depth and it's not going to piss Bray off. Bray knew when he committed that we had every intention on signing another QB and that it'd be a HS QB if we could get one that was high enough caliber.

I'm not writing Newton completely off because we could strike out with Rees and then offer Newton, but, like I said, I think that ship all but sailed when he got suspended.

Tennessee will be fortunate to win 7 or 8 games next year IMO b/c the schedule is a monster and we are going to have a lot of fresh faces or first year starters.

With Newton, at worst, Vols go 9-3. No reason Vols cant beat Oregon and Florida at home. Bama and LSU will be the toughest 2 games and neither have a great QB. With Newton, Vols have best qb in SEC and win SEC. Without Newton, Vols lose to Oregon,Florida,Georgia,Alabama,LSU,South Carolina and probably someone else.

He could win us an extra game or two next year but he isn't going to be the difference between a 9 or 10 win season and a 5 win season.

Just curious, what exactly makes you think that he'd be that big a difference? Because he trucked Dennis Rogan as a freshman? Because he got passed up by Brantley as a sophomore while he actually digressed passing-wise? Or is it because he is blowing up in JUCO? I've gave my reasons for why he could easily bust. I just wanna know what makes everyone so completely sure that he is going to make a middle of the road team into a championship caliber team. If that was so obvious, I'd think he would have more offers than KSU and MSU.

Cam's attitude is awful. Iwanted him on our team, but no longer after his suspension.

I have not heard that we know conclusively what lead to the partial-game suspension. (I presume it wasn't eye-gouging)

Regarding his attitude, I sat about ten rows up directly behind him on the Blinn sidelines and watched him carefully. He was very calm and composed throughout the game that I went to. No venting of frustrations when the offense did not move the ball. Came off the field and immediately started talking with the coaching staff.

Near the end of the game, as Cam was leading a charge to get Blinn back in the game, he became somewhat fiery with his teammates. The opposing fans (that were all around me) started chanting "laaaptop, laaaptop" and after Cam scored the winning touchdown he ran off the field, looked up at the opposing fans and screamed "Now, go home!" Fire in his eyes.

No gangsta characteristics were on display at any time. I was very impressed with what I saw of his sideline demeanor. I also spoke with a lady that works media at Blinn and deals with Cam all the time. You could tell she loves the young man. I can only go by what I saw with my own two eyes, even if it is a limited window in time.

TIFWIW

That's real cute little man now let me give you not an opinion but the facts.Cam Newton WILL NOT guarantee this team wins over Florida, Bama, Oregon, USCjr., or anyone else nor does it mean this is only a four or five win team without him.According to your logic this guy is guaranteed to single handedly win games that if a team like Texas or Bama that already has talent would never lose a game while he was in the lineup but for some strange reason it doesn't appear as though SuperCam is headed to a team like this now does it?And BTW, your use of ***** in place of curse words is very impressive.Like I said in my previous post go log out your doing nothing but humiliating yourself.

He doesn't guarantee it, but he is better than what we already have here. He more than likely gives us the best chance to win next year assuming we get him.

The coaches obviously disagree, or Newton would have had an offer weeks ago, if not months ago.

That's interesting stuff. I'd like to know what the suspension was all about too. This kid has the physical gifts that makes us all drool, but it's the mental aspect that sets apart the good ones from the great ones. I am all for second chances.

All indications seem to point that we have moved on. I'm hoping that Bray is half as good as I think. He has the frame (not quite the weight) and hopefully the mindset to make it all work.

True, but like someone said in an earlier post they might be just waiting to see if they can turn another qb and keep newton as a backup plan.

I don't care how great he looks at a JUCO. Brent Schaeffer looked like a future hall of famer in JUCO. He was less than impressive at UF in an offense that is much more suited for his skills than what he would be in here.

In all fairness Ole Miss didn't have much besides Schaeffer at the time.

He was there long enough to gain talent. It didn't help too much. If the coaches really thought Newton was that great, they would have offered. If he was half as good as many people on here make him out to be, he would have better offers. Either he is a huge character issue or he just isn't the Heisman contender like he's made out to be. I'm thinking a little of both.
