Guys and Gals, I'm telling you the absolute truth here............if this coaching staff was "stunned" by Cromptons play on Saturday, we are in BIG trouble. How many of you were "stunned"?
I don't know if they were "stunned" or not, but Crompton has long had the reputation of somebody who looks completely different in practice than he does in a game. This was this coaching staff's first exposure to it. No doubt they saw a big improvement between what they saw in practice this year and last season's film, and figured that he had made some pretty big strides since then. It was probably an ugly surprise to watch him regress like that.
You mean this coaching staff made the same mistake as the last one?!?! NO WAY!!!hmy:

Put Eric Berry in. At least you'd have a set of wheels, if your going to be one dimensional anyway, might as well put Richardson back there or Berry. Hell mix it up and use them both. I don't know, but its like watching a bad rerun of last year all over again. Its flustrating to watchI don't think either staff has made a mistake with the quarterbacks, other than the fact that these two guys are on the roster to begin with. Neither of them can play. The only difference seems to be that Crompton looks okay in practice but then stinks it up in games, while Stephens is crappy all the time. Everyone howling about how Kiffin should have changed QBs against UCLA seems to have forgotten how Stephens passed Wyoming to victory last year.
I mean, as bad as Crompton is, consider that this is the third time that he's beat Stephens out under two different coaching staffs. (To start the season last year, to take over again at the end of the year after Stephens flopped, and to start this season.) If Crompton is this bad and he keeps beating out Stephens, how bad must Stephens be?
Most negative SOBs I've ever been around. Come on evern a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then! Why don't we just stop the season now and give the championship to CUM and save some pain?
Our team can beat these guys and if not as long as they don't quit in the second half and are still fighting that is one heck of an improvment.
i can say with certainty that if you asked most ut fans what they were booing about saturday, their honest answer would be crompton and not the coaching staff. do i agree with it? no, not really but that was where most of the boobirds were aiming at
also, i can almost guarantee you that nobody would have complained about the playcalling saturday had we not had inept qb play that was behind the loss in the first place
I have yet to find anyone that is anything other than disappointed in the playcalling. It all came to a head on the goal line 4th and 1 when a fresh Price reentered the game. Lane calling it off tackle - right at Price, summed up a very poor play calling day and put the nail in the loss.
Lane said he'd learn after the game. Too bad for Eric Berry he's learning to call a game just now.

I agree. The play calling was very vanilla. Our QB play has something to do with that though. But, there are things you can do to offset bad QB play to a certain extent. The staff didn't do a good job of that vs. UCLA. But, like I've said, Lane is a pup. He's learning too. It'll get better.
If it was just bad QB play, it would be one thing, but when your OL is getting dominated too, anything you do as a playcaller is going to look bad. He didn't have any options that didn't suck.
I'd like to have seen him try something else too, but really, I can understand why Kiffin called it the way he did, given the culture he's trying to establish (pulling Brown for going out of bounds against WKU, etc.). If you can't get two yards on two carries -- at home against a Pac 10 team -- then you might as well not have gotten off the bus.

Since the 2001 game was discussed some, let's take a look at the players on our team that year who I believe played in the game:
QB Clausen
TE Whitten (NFL, Pro Bowl)
WR Stallworth (NFL)
WR Washington (NFL)
WR Parker (NFL)
OL Ofenheusle (NFL)
OL Herrera (NFL)
OL Coleman
OL Wells (NFL)
OL Munoz
OL Weary (NFL)
RB Stephens (NFL)
FB Bartholomew
DE Veal (NFL)
DE Jackson
DE Sub. Overstreet (NFL)
DE Sub. Ritzman (NFL)
DT Haynesworth (NFL, Pro Bowl)
DT Henderson (NFL, Pro Bowl)
DT Sub. Franklin (NFL)
DT Sub, Moore (NFL)
LB Moore (NFL)
LB Stevenson (NFL)
LB Whiteside (NFL)
LB Burnette (NFL)
CB Greer (NFL)
CB Lott (NFL)
S Battle (NFL)
S Baker (NFL)
DB Jones (NFL)
DB Gaines (NFL)
That is not a team that would ever be an 18 point dog to anyone other than people were used to us choking against Spurrier.
I just don't like the head guy calling it from the sidelines. It hurt Nutt at Arky and it will hurt Kiffin at UT. Get the OC in the booth and let him call it while you listen in with veto power and ability to change anything.
