Kiffin Blown Away By Hatred For Crompton.

All that is expected of Crompton is to manage the game. I didn't have high expectations for him. Just run the show and take care of the football. He is not a playmaker nor do we need him to be.He doesn't have to win the game just don't lose it.
Excellent post CD. This is 100% truth and my exact thoughts. You definitely have a keener insight and way to convey it than 90% of the posters here. You actually gave your post some thought that is sorely lacking here sometimes.

I see what you mean but it was the wide open guys he had a problem throwing to.

I agree that his throws to Jones were atrocious, but I wonder how much of that was just missing him that badly and how much was miscommunication.

I find it hard to believe that his accuracy could waver so much from receiver to receiver. He was hitting Hancock pretty well and missing the boat with Jones. I wonder if thought that slant was supposed to be deeper and threw accordingly. Either way, I cringed most of the game, but saw good things when he was throwing to Hancock (plus Hancock showed great hands and body control to boot)

again I see your point but I was leaning more to Warren and Cottam who were wide open on a couple of plays. You know, the old locking in on one guy thing.

I'm in the stadium last yr watching a game, JC is playing terrible, couldn't pass the ball in the water if hes standing in the middle of the atlantic, the boos are often and loud, my teenage son turns to me and says theres no way I could boo a college athlete. This made me think that maybe I'm doing ok raising him.We didn't play well that day but I left the game a proud dad.

So i guess it's ok with you that Cory Anderson and Jayson Swain both said Crompton sucked and Gerald Jones basically saying the same thing in the locker room?

Players are entitled to say what they want, same with analysts. People can say that's he's bad until they are blue in the face-my issue is the booing and all out hatred for him by fans. You think that helps anything? He is aware that he is struggling, believe me-he's not oblivious to it. But I guess booing the crap out of him and yelling obsenities makes you feel like a man, huh?...plus, it makes TN fans look bad to mercilessly pile on a college kid like this.

Good for you, and for your son. I will never understand people who get off on booing a college kid. But evidently a lot of those people go to Neyland Stadium. They should be ashamed, really.

Well stated, respectfully stated opinion.

Why do people feel compelled to go from stating objective facts to definitive conjectures about what will and won't happen?

Do I think it is likely that JC will become a great QB? Honestly, no. Do I think UT will have a good record with him at QB this year? No.

Can I state either of those as foregone conclusions? NO... Neither can you.

Suggestion: Sit back. Keep your mind open and positive. AND let CLK do the job he was hired to do... then criticize him if it doesn't work.

Well... you can look at it that way, but again, w're dealing with a senior, right? Here's another way to look at it

I was under the impression that Kiffin's attitude was there was no locked up positions. Players had to go out and work for their starting spots and then work to keep them. To me, that means that if Crompton can't get it done he's looking for the best person to fill that position. Right?

Is Crompton the best game day QB we have on the roster? I guess I was under the impression that Kiffin's approach was one game at a time. Which players are stepping up and can give the team the best chance to win for each game, one game at a time. I wasn't expecting to see him pick a player and stick with him when he demonstrates he can't do the job. We all knew this was our most vulnerable position on the team coming in to the season, but after #8's play against UCLA I think we can begin to decifer that perhaps it's not that the offensive scheme is too complicated, or that there will be a natural adjustment to a new system, but rather we have a QB that isn't mentally prepared for this level of competition.

We're not developing a young team, we're trying to win as many of our games as we can. Right? If these assumptions are wrong, then yes, I'm off base.

I would like for someone to tell me another schools fans that have been as cruel to there QB in the history of college football.

What exactly have we done "to him" to be cruel?

Honelstly and all you so called UT fans that think this is the price you pay to be a QB on the big stage, please tell me another school's fan base that has giving there QB death threats for throwing interceptions.

So he says. Have you seen the threats, police report, anything to substantiate this?

Yeah I would like everyone that is hating on the 22 year old to realize that you are making our program look horrible in the nations eyes. NOT CROMPTON! YOU ALL ARE THE TALK OF THE MEDIA RIGHT NOW! agian NOT CROMPTON!

A Google search says otherwise. Sports journalist have even used words like inept to describe him.

I don't live in Knoxville and all I hear where I am is how our fans turn on there coach and players like rabid dogs and have no clue why any coach or player would ever want to come here. "Some" of you are pathetic!

..... and someone is Melodramatic.

I think there is def. something to this... I saw several plays where he threw an incomplete to his #1 receiver but when they showed the reply there was a player wide open down field - at least one time that player was in or next to the end zone, with half a field between the TN receiver and the DB. and it's pretty clear that the DBs were able to read his eyes.

<sigh>

he's a young man, so personally I wish him no ill will on campus, Kiffin needs to defend him so he can get through his day and get his degree, but he's no starting QB. I think if folks are frustrated, take it up with the coach, but don't blame him, he's doing what he can, which isn't enough to win. we need someone with skills beyond his limits.

But I also have to say, when you sign with a major university to play ball you have to want the spotlight, not just the chance to play ball. Perhaps UT was a bad fit all around. and as for BJC, wish him all the best in Chat. where no one will ever see him play - he clearly shot himself in the foot.

I have no idea what Kiffin is thinking. As an outsider looking in, I can see your point. I keep wondering what the harm could be in getting Stephens out there. He's probably going to be the guy next year so the time could be valuable.

But then I bring myself back to what you said. Kiffin did say that all the positions were open. If NS was winning the position, he'd get the position.

JC to me looks like he hesitates during games with his decisions... like he's thinking too much. I tell my kids when they're pitching that they can't think about it. They just have to decide where the ball is going then throw it there... with no doubts. JC in spite of everything that's been done and said still seems to have a confidence problem.

Like you said, I'm not sure this is fixable... CLK obviously thinks it is or else is just too stubborn to give up. Stubborness has its own merits and demerits.

I wonder if Crompton just had a bad game? i mean come on Peyton Manning has bad games Jay Cutler is a good quarterback and threw 3 Int's the other night im telling you lets trust this kid and just believe in him he has what it takes he just needs to go through with it.

Usually I would say, yes he just had a bad game but he had to many of those bad games last year for me to hope or believe he is going to play better. I hate it for this kid that things are going so bad for him and I would love for him to prove me wrong and kick the Gators *** Sat but I just dont see it happnin. All I can say is good luck Sat JC, you're gonna need it. GO VOLS!!!!

I forgot about Warren (who might be better than Hancock) and I also noticed that Cottam was open as well. The real problem is that Crompton cannot think at game speed.

I wish Kiffin would just teach him to fake-read his progressions (i.e., give him a primary target on a short easy route but make him start the play looking at another receiver and give a pump fake before going back to his primary). At least then we could keep the opposing DBs from cheating on coverage. We shall see I guess......

There are plenty - first one to mind is Chris Simms.

Death threats are ridiculous, mostly made by sissys. But don't think it's just lunatics in the UT fan base.

I don't hate JC. I am still hoping he will regain his confidence and play like he is capable of playing. No, he is'nt Manning, or Tebow, but he has a good arm. Go Vols! Does anyone know if there is any way for fans to send personal messages to JC? Thanks. GO VOLS!

Yes! Crompton is thinking too much, or at least that's what it seems. You know who he reminds me of? Heath Shuler, but on a different level. NOw I think the playbook Heath had was much, much easier to remember, and Heath had a much better OL, but when Heath got to the Redskins (I now live in northern VA) he was overwhelmed mentally... you could see it in his face, he began OVERthinking each and every pass, and with the mediocre OL in front of him, he either threw up INTs a lot of spent time on his backside. It was so gruesome to watch because you just wanted to tell him to relax and let instincts kick in... he never did, then ended up taking that fat signing bonus and going home (with a bad foot injury, as well).

Anyway, yes, Crompton has that look, and it's painful to watch. I feel for him as a kid, but man I wish we had something, anything else to do. SEC defenses are too fast, and if UCLA stacked up the box, what's FL and bama gonna do?

<sigh> oh well

I guess you could send him an encouraging message over Facebook. You don't have to be friends with him to send him one.

I have a question about quarterback mechanics that someone here may be able to answer. I don't think I've ever seen a quarterback take a large hop at the end of their drop like Crompton does. Wouldn't that large hop throw off the timing of the route? At the very least, I would think it would alert the DB's to the depth of the routes so they could jump them.

I don't think anybody who calls themselves a Vol actually hates JC. What we all want is to win games and in order to do that, we have to have an effective QB. There are plenty of boys on this team who are working just as hard as JC, m-a-y have as much or more talent and they want their shot to lead this team also. So thinking that JC "deserves" more of an opportunity than another player in that regard is just not supportable. Seems like we're worried too much about doing something to errode JC's confidence. If CLK went about his job like he should (produce best results for team rather than protect a special kid), then he'd be working another QB candidate into the starting role. It appears that we may have just enough of an OL to be able to be competitive with average SEC teams. But, again being competitive requires better production from the QB than we got last year or last week.

Give the kid a break. He's busting his a$$ for us for what, a game? No need for him to receve death threats and have all the bashing. If he sees this week that CLK is gonna take care of him regardless the outcome, maybe just maybe that will lift some of the pressure of his shoulders and he actually might have a good/decent game for us. Regardless the outcome it's just a game folks, not worth all the hatred.:espn:
