The ucla safety actually hurt UT, since UCLA got to punt from the 20 instead the endzone.

I thought that too. I was screaming for them to let him out of the endzone. Those two points couldn't have helped, but better field position could have.

Sad but true. Maybe we can learn and move on from this experience.........then again, I said that this time last year too.

I made the same mistake in assuming this. They would have taken a knee to force the safety regardless. They would NEVER have punted from the endzone

No. UCLA would have had their punter run out of the endzone for a safety. The only difference is that there would have been 45 seconds less left on the clock.

Good grief I can't believe someone is starting this crap again. We walk away with 2 pts regardless but the safety on 3rd down actually helped us save some clock.

How can anyone take this guy seriously with comments like this included in the article.

"3. How can a school as big as UCLA, set firmly in Southern California with harems of hot women everywhere, not bring a single attractive girl to the game?

For shame, UCLA, for shame.

Instead we learned that Asian men with backpacks travel well."

Travis is a joke. This isn't a news article, but rather just a personal post that is more appropriate in a VN forum.

John Clayton, Clay Travis is not.

If you want strict analysis of a game, you can certainly find it elsewhere.

I must admit, I'm still baffled by these folks who disagree with Travis's sentiment. The argument I keep hearing on the radio is that, "Stephens can't do no better." Double negatives aside, I'd like to ask them...HOW DO YOU KNOW?
Crompton has proven over and over again that he cannot win on Saturdays. There is zero hope in Jonathan Crompton's game. There is, however, a shred of hope that Stephens could pull it together and prove to be a better game manager. But nobody is willing to give that a shot. What is the worst case senario if you play Stephens...we STILL lose the games?

Were you paying attention last season? Everyone screamed and screamed for a QB change.....and then Stephens came in and wasn't any better. He was so bad, in fact, that Crompton ended up finishing out the season. Now here we are again, and people are howling for Nick Stephens as though somehow things will be different this year. Crompton has a reputation as a guy who looks great in practice but chokes in the games, but Stephens has a rep as an interception machine even in practice. How exactly is that an improvement?

I really don't care who Kiffin goes with at QB, because he doesn't have any good options. Neither of these guys is an SEC quarterback.

I agree. That was a pretty boring and stupid article.

Which part of Clay's write-up was inaccurate? I thought it was spot-on about Crompton, Kiffin, and Fulmer. I was wondering why they didn't just throw it out to Jones or Richardson too. On the final series, we would have been better off with a quick screen to Jones and hope that he makes somebody miss.

I never said inaccurate I said boring and stupid. He said nothing new and used all the armchair-qb cliches he could find. To me that's just lazy writing

His entire book was lazy writing. It contained one decent and useful theme, which was basically that all of us as fans should just take a deep breath because these are just kids, and this is just a game, and they have a much better and healthier perspective about it than we do. And then here he is, ignoring everything that he just wrote in his own book, spewing a personal screed against one of the players.

He's not a writer, he's one of these bloggers that's somehow managed to parlay that into a career. There's a difference. I regret spending money on his book.

Thats pretty much where it is right there...well said....at this point we have who we have....starter or not....With the exceptions of the new players (Brown, NU'Kese etc.....) we are STILL the same team from last year...yeah we have great coaches...but you can only do so much with the players we have...All you Foolmerites can thank Phil for his recruiting or lack thereof....this is what we are left with...what you should be wondering is just who in the :furious3: recruited these guys and why.....and i am not talking about the whole team either we do have some great YOUNG players...this will be a LONG season....

But we got 35-40 seconds more on the clock because the safety caused the clock to stop. IMO time > 20 yards closer.

Don't pay any attention to him. He's a cromptonite.

It's sports journalism, i.e., entertainment. He isn't exactly covering the constitutional convention. Don't take yourself so seriously.

You know, I used to think it was all an act. I've come to realize its just that you don't understand 90% of what's being discussed.

And to your point above, how would we have ever been 20yds closer? I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for your answer

Well crafted.

That may have been the single most stunning article or post outside this forum that I have ever read.

The kool-aid drinking homer in me cringed all the way though this forced autopsy of reality. Regardless of how much truth my pragmatic reality based subconscious wants to be set free. I have always, always let the kool-aid drinking, optimistic homer rule my passion for the all things orange. I just find the game to be more enjoyable in this state of mind. I will continue to be a fan in this state of mind. But as always I do see the negative reality and the impending doom scenario. I will continue down this hapless road that winds through all the intangibles that is currently Vols football. Keeping a singular eye toward the future and what is surely to come!

GO VOLS.

It looks like we agree that the safety, when it happened, helped us. So why are you arguing with me? Just for the sake of arguing, or just to be a douchebag?

As far as my 20yds comment. At the time, it was thought they were going to punt it to us if they ran a play on 3rd down, then ran the clock down and then punted to us. Obviously a punt from the endzone would probably have, assuming a fair catch, put Tennessee around the 45-50. But a post safety kick put us on our 25-30 yd line (can't remember exactly). Therefore the 20 yr delta.
