Article: Clay Travis - "Crompton's Rocky Flop..."

As far as my 20yds comment. At the time, it was thought they were going to punt it to us if they ran a play on 3rd down, then ran the clock down and then punted to us. Obviously a punt from the endzone would probably have, assuming a fair catch, put Tennessee around the 45-50. But a post safety kick put us on our 25-30 yd line (can't remember exactly). Therefore the 20 yr delta.

my point is, there's not a football coach in the world that punts from his own end zone with a 6pt lead and under 2min. Even if the qb got out on 3rd they would give us the safety and kick from the 20.

It looks like we agree that the safety, when it happened, helped us. So why are you arguing with me? Just for the sake of arguing, or just to be a douchebag?

If anyone thought they were going to punt the ball on 4th down, then they (including you) apparently know very little about football.

I must admit, I'm still baffled by these folks who disagree with Travis's sentiment. The argument I keep hearing on the radio is that, "Stephens can't do no better." Double negatives aside, I'd like to ask them...HOW DO YOU KNOW?
Crompton has proven over and over again that he cannot win on Saturdays. There is zero hope in Jonathan Crompton's game. There is, however, a shred of hope that Stephens could pull it together and prove to be a better game manager. But nobody is willing to give that a shot. What is the worst case senario if you play Stephens...we STILL lose the games?

Well we have evidence from last year that Stephens wasn't particularly an upgrade from Crompton.

So true. I have thought awhile about this and, with the exception of the two lucky and underthrown bombs by Stevens against Georgia and Miss St, his numbers are virtually identical to the Crompster's. Those two long passes stand out as the ONLY success UT had going down the field last year, that's truem However the rest of Stevens' play left A LOT to be desired.

Bottomline is that based on last year, neither Stevens or Crompton can move the ball. Wouldn't matter which one starts, we are in for a long season.

The only real quibble I have with this article is in his disgust he throws Kiffin under the bus for not bringing in a QB this year.

Well Mr. Travis, for all you supposedly know about football that is a stupid remark.

The only QB recruits that Kiffin inherited from Fulmer's staff was a 2nd tier QB who I think ended up at Baylor and a dual purpose QB with a bum knee who's being red shirted this year at Clemson. Given the late start and the fact the good QBs were already off the board, what QB was Kiffin magically supposed to find that would have been any use to us this year????? That is just an ignorant remark.

Not quite true. KY managed to let Crompton complete a bomb to a wide-open Denarius Moore for a back-breaking TD.

I haven't read Clay's book yet. It must be nice to be able to visit all 12 stadiums in one year and be treated really special everywhere you go, because you're writing a book.

I liked today's write-up.

Well Mr. Travis, for all you supposedly know about football that is a stupid remark.

If you sit through his book, you figure out pretty quickly that Travis doesn't know any more about football than the average fan. Dozens of regular posters on this site write more authoritatively about football than Travis does.

There's a reason why almost his whole book consists of him hanging out and shooting the breeze with equipment managers, a truck driver, Fostermom, and some of his buddies.

I agree with most of the points in this article. I think a lot of the frustration in the fan base can be attributed to the cost of going to a game. When our ticket prices are the highest in the SEC people want to see wins. Neyland has turned into a Pro Stadium atmosphere. I remember when I was a kid the whole stadium was loud. Now the student section is still really loud with a noticeable difference in the other end zone. My point is when Jim Bob from Newport who is a die hard football fan can't afford to come to the game it changes the atmosphere.

Since when are UT's tickets the highest? IIRC we were about middle of the pack last year.

And if Jimbob was that big a fan he would make choices that allow him to afford tickets. Lots of things in life are like that

Poor Crompton will be remembered as the worst QB that ever played at Tennessee and its not even close. This guy has a 2/1 interception to touchdown ratio and hasn't won a big game so far.

2. You know what's the most frustrating thing about watching Crompton in person? You can see his mistakes before he can.

so so true

Kiffin needs to pull crompton early when florida gets up 2 TDs and go with a QB who at least gives UT a chance to score.

It was incredibly loud throughout the fourth quarter, as loud as Neyland has been in years. This wasn't some hopeful, joyous cheering, it was a scream from the pit of your stomach, desperation melded into a blood-curdling noise. A recognition on the part of an awful lot of fans that a loss to UCLA dooms the 2009 season.

This really epitomized itself after Crompton threw an awful interception on fourth-and-14. Luckily UCLA was offsides. As the ball was spotted for 4th and 9 the crowd, in a madcap gambit to alter the karma, begins chanting, "Let's go Crompton."

The entire stadium.

I've never heard anything like it.

And you probably never will again...it's depressing how right Clay was about this...:cray:
