Is there a shift happening from recruiting so many high school players to going to recruit more from the portal by Heupel and especially the mostly newer defensive staff?

To an extent, yes. But the new defensive staff is bringing the B10 culture that is winning right now for lack of better terms. For years, the Big Ten has learned how to build TEAMS that fit together and hired great staffs. Meanwhile, the SEC has stacked talent and just had everyone compete until stars rose to the top. Now the playing field has leveled out and the SEC is still just chasing traits and the B10 is winning championships. I'd say the one coach in the SEC that truly knows how to build a team is Kirby and it is no coincidence that he keeps leading the top team in the conference even tho a large share of his contributors are random Ga kids.

Knowles knows what works in his defense and is looking for skillsets that can become contributors within the system. It has worked everywhere he has been so the blatant proof of concept is there. The difference with him and the last staff is he has a vision and developmental plan for every single player he recruits. He is not just chasing traits and hoping enough find their potential for cheap. This is something that Heupel has really taken an immense step forward in this offseason as you saw with getting Derek Owings, who meticulously designs an hour by hour plan for every individual to reach their physical potential.

The difference when you have a plan is you know what works and there are a lot of recruits in the country that a good coach can make work. For example, there is a reason that this coaching staff is recruiting like 12 DBs right now. For that reason, Knowles is going to trust his and his guys' evaluations for what they deem a fair price and use the bigger investments for instant impact playmakers and portal. Meanwhile, other programs in the SEC are going to keep chasing the biggest, longest, or most explosive players that will be at Georgia State in three years. The point of all this is say they are not going to just pay a four-star big money just bc he is more athletic than other people that produce on the field. Going to be much more of a NFL team building philosophy on defense -- keep drafting top-rated guys (on team board, not sites) from winning programs and then get top free agents to fill out unit (transfer portal).

Because you can now field instant impact players from the transfer portal instead of spending money on high school kids that may need a year or two of development.

This is the new landscape of college sports now.
