Too much ice

Not sure you do. No one is averaging 60-80 hrs/wk for an entire year in the LE world. Maybe 60 for an entire year but you damn well know that's not sustainable
Lmao as I rookie when I was young and single my normal two weeks pay period looked like this

80 hours regular shifts (usually 5 8 hr shifts) in two weeks
Then add in 2-4 hours for court a week
Then required training or meetings (which could be anywhere from 2-40 hours some weeks)
Pick up a extra shift or two (16 hours) because someone is off or it’s needed
On football Saturdays you work a mandatory assignment for UT football games (16 hrs)
And some guys would work extra 2-8 hour shifts at Friday night HS sports or security for stores or events.

Firefighter and EMTs sometimes have 72 hr shifts built in. Not counting training hours

Nurses make $$$$$ with OT too. Some due to mandatory training and meetings. Some just to pick up extra $$$

It's not the highest paying profession. None of them are paid enough, much like teachers, who don't get OT. The other side of that coin is that many of them want to live beyond their means, which Ricky is omitting from his comments
I was paid just fine once I was there a year or two. One of the best pensions there is and then when I went into a related private profession I had a great retirement plan too.

Overtime is great for first responders and definitely worth the $$$ which is usually time and half or even better. But you do have to have experience in work life balance once you mature a bit

Idk. I got a buddy that’s a firefighter and he works 72 hours every week. Has been doing it since he started
Some people just don’t know what real work hours look like in some professions. They don’t understand the sheer amount of extra stuff required to be a first responder and also how much OT a normal one works. Even if they didn’t sign up for extra shifts or special assignments.

I put in 14 hrs today 💪
I'll probably sleep until 10 am and go collect some checks tomorrow 🤣

Do you realize that many police officers, firefighters and nurses work tons of OT. Often between 20-80 hours of OT sometimes? Especially if they are young and single

You just don’t know how the real world operates.
'Between 20 and 80' is an extreme range. If staying awake and doing actual work is involved, 20's easy enough and past 40 isn’t doable for any extended time. Nobody averages 40+ hours of overtime actual work for a year.

100% spot on. When I could work OT it was only if I wanted a new guitar, stove, etc. I see people work OT now because they need it to fund their life style. I had a grievance after not giving a guy OT that said "my wife is devastated she had earmarked that money and spent it". Lol. Another MAGA turd with zero common sense who blames Biden for all his self inflicted problems.

I have an employee who works 14 hour shifts for 60 to 90 days in a row with no breaks for the OT. I expect him to drop dead from it in a year or two. Dudes 60+ and in terrible health.

Nothing if you like working all the time.
Back then I didn't do it to work OT all the time, I did it to help out AND to make tons of $$$. You can pay off entire rent/bills with 1/2 a paycheck (at least back then) lol.

Gave me opportunities to travel and do many many fun things as a younger man

Again depends on what the OT is.....sitting in a police cruiser for 10 hours in the middle of the night on the interstate while using your police car lights for construction and listening to the radio isn't the same as working an actual police shift with calls for service

Standing around for 4 hours at a high school football game drinking coke and walking around isn't the same as directing traffic outside Neyland stadium for 8 hours.

Picking and choosing what OT you are working matters to your body as well

I'd do the same but it was mainly to put cash in the bank. For a few years my department could pretty much set our own paychecks but we had to put in the hours being productive. Between OT and DT we'd about double our wages. Make hay while the sun's shining.

Some people, like me, never got OT pay, so I am not sure how many hours I worked per week. I know there were some occasional 100 hour weeks. For most of my career, I probably averaged 50 per week

I stopped being a company man a long long time ago. Now I just pretend.

I never minded being a "company man" as my departments treated me very well and I was helping save lives and do good things while making tons of money.

Win-win-win as far as I was concerned

This can be said about the majority of Americans.
I read this the other day and wasn’t surprised at all.
Retirement Account Millionaires: Only about 2.5% to 3.2% of all Americans have $1 million or more in retirement accounts (e.g., 401(k)s or IRAs).

He may end up being one of those cockroach type guys that lives to be 90 in spite of looking like a dead man at 65
