TLDR version: it's set to be officially announced in May. The play-in games would go from 8 teams to 24 teams, which means more teams will have to play their way into the formal tournament. 8 teams that otherwise would have made the field of 64 will now have to play in the new play-in tournament.

It's all about money. NIL and transfer portal have widened the gap between the big conf vs the mid majors and lower. Cinderella teams and real upsets are headed for the dumpster.

I really don't care. There are only about 12 teams each year that can win it. Adding more teams will not decrease any given contencder's likelihood. Heck it might somehow even increase their likelihood when mediocre high floor teams beat potential cinderellas. Will I watch? No? I don't currently watch the "first four" anyway. Does it bother me that said games exist. Also, no. Let 'em knock themselves out. I also don't care that the Quickpro.Com Omaha Bowl exists.

The NCAA cutting off its nose to spite its face here. The dance has historically been where all “their” money comes from. NIL already means true Cinderellas are hard to come by because power conferences pick over their rosters now and poach their best with money they can’t match. Now we want to try and make extra sure no small conference auto qualifier ever gets out of the first weekend by inundating the bracket with a bunch more B1G/SEC teams on the low side of a .500 conference win pct. This is a product that virtually no one wants and makes the tourney less interesting.

my guess is that it's because right now nobody even pays attention to the play in games on Tuesday and Wednesday. they want more eyeballs earlier in the week.

but imagine being a team that otherwise would have been in the field of 64 but you got pulled out to play this stupid play-in tournament and now you get beat and don't even make it to Thursday 😂
Exactly!
Let’s have a tournament to get into the tournament to get into the tournament.

It’s called THE REGULAR SEASON!!

Now that players are legally getting paid, there's no legal barrier to prevent the NCAA from treating them like slaves.

I wonder if it's a play by the NCAA to goad the players into a collective bargaining agreement, which seems to be the only available route back to sanity.

Yeah, I can’t wait for the first SEC “work stoppage”

Sounds good in theory, but wait a year or two.
The networks will see declining viewership in that first week / weekend and they'll tell the NCAA to put it back to 64/68.
The gambling movers will see a down tick in overall betting since the field that first week will be wide open and crazily unpredictable...that also makes for a "losing" week to the book keepers and they won't stand for that for very long.

This is what it is - a pure money grab by the big boy conferences to get more share of the tournament money.

Personally, I wish they would have never moved off the 64. The 'play-in' games are pretty much worthless outside of this year where a team that actually played in the First Four made it past the First Round of 64.
64 has so much anticipation behind it - you can't wait for Thursday at Noon !!!

I enjoy basketball, and the post season, so more basketball, and more post season is also enjoyable to me. There's been a ton of years where I'd love to have seen Tennessee make that expanded version of the tournament.
