March Madness moving to 76 teams

As long as this doesn't compromise small conference automatic bids, I'm fine with it. It waters down the tournament, but at this point it is has reached that point already.

I enjoy basketball, and the post season, so more basketball, and more post season is also enjoyable to me. There's been a ton of years where I'd love to have seen Tennessee make that expanded version of the tournament.
I get that but on the flip side it waters down the significance of some of the conference tournaments which have an automatic bid. Those were the original play in games.

This got me thinking, I wouldn’t completely despise this if they used a fair number of spots on smaller conferences and mid majors. Belmont won the MVC this year in the regular season and was 6-2 in their quadrant 1/2 games but laid an egg in their conference tournament so instead we got to see Northern Iowa (4-8 in q1/2 games) lose to St John’s by 26. Use some of those additional spots on teams like Belmont who, you know… won something, like their regular season. By March I’ve been watching the SEC for months and I’d just as soon see more of everyone else.

Not crazy about it. It seems that every sport just keeps expanding their playoff. Soon will the regular season even matter other than for seeding? Everyone gets a ribbon now.

Did the women’s tourney ever expand? Or are they still at 64? They should honestly go to 32. There are only a few teams that can win it each year.

I guessed that if the men are doing it then the women will scream inequality if they don’t get the same deal. I haven’t seen anything, but that’s because no one covers women’s sports.

Jay Williams on ESPN stated that the Power 4 would break off and have their own tournament in the future. Is that really talked about?

It's not that big of a deal, all it means is 4 more P4 teams and 4 more good midmajor teams get in a year

The primary driver of this move hasn't been money, but rather access for at-large bids for power conferences. The expansion has been pushed by power conferences, which have grown throughout the course of the current deal.

Right. And why do you think the big conferences want access to more at-large bids? Because they will get a bigger cut of the profits lol

pretty soon losing 15 regular season games will be par for the course and nobody will care about the AP rankings during the season.

Just rest your players and wait for March.

TLDR version: it's set to be officially announced in May. The play-in games would go from 8 teams to 24 teams, which means more teams will have to play their way into the formal tournament. 8 teams that otherwise would have made the field of 64 will now have to play in the new play-in tournament.

Doesn't matter, just a TV money grab. Only the top 10-15 teams who have the deepest pockets will now be able to get to elite 8 or better. Gone are the Cinderella stories.

I always hated cinderella stories ever since Loyola Chicago beat Tennessee. Screw the Cinderellas is what I say.
