I’d trade any post currently on our roster for JP, but that’s just me. I’d trade Lue for Cade also.
I don’t have the energy for a long internet struggle, but staff view of JP was that he was strong at both ends but high reinjury risk. The defense of Freshman JP vs Edey should be strong evidence of his defensive upside— One datapoint only. After the injury he was often timid at both ends. He became a slappy defender and an arm rebounder, when he was not before. We got glimpses of what he might do, but his lower body physicality at both ends was too safe. He’ll go the way of his foot under another good coach. In my opinion which isnt worth a heal of beans but i think JP just didnt bring much on the defensive end but fouls. So much potential on the offensive end. Maybe a change of scenery is just what the doctor ordered for him. But i like more athletic shot blockers that can go finish and not be soft around the rim. I hope thats what we are getting.
Man we have had a couple. Torrey Harris my dad would get so frustrated. Repeatedly say how can you be 6'10" and cant make a layup? LolAgreed.
We pretty much already knew what we had in JP and likely he wasn’t going to improve that much.
Never seen a 6’11 Big Man miss so many easy shots along with having bad hands and piss poor defense.
Both sides needed a fresh start.
His brother in law telling me that he was torn between staying at Vandy, NBA or Tennessee. If Byington had gone to UNC he would have followed him. No imagination or opinions. I have a lot of those, but in this case these are the facts. You don’t have to believe me. Florida was also involvedIt had “wheels” based on what exactly other than the imagination of a few posters on here?
There is nothing to debate, lol. You were selling it hard and bashing posters who were kind of skeptical.Pal, debating you is harder than debating 2024 Biden. Good luck to you
REINJURY risk. Can't be overstated. Once a foot becomes a problem it quite often remains a problem. All the potential in the world is useless when you are sitting on the bench in street clothes.I don’t have the energy for a long internet struggle, but staff view of JP was that he was strong at both ends but high reinjury risk. We don't have a post offensive player on the roster of his caliber and probably won't find one in the portal, but perhaps the coaching staff believes there is more upside in Brown's post play that may mitigate JP's loss. Your perspective is understandable. No guarantees with Rubin but his role is going to be similar to Okpara's. If rumors are true, I'm not sure I would have paid JP what they were requesting given his injury history. JP had a good stretch of games from early February through early March this past year, but consistency has been an issue and defensively wasn't a strong suit for him either. To be fair perhaps the inconstancies were due to his injuries. Pros and cons....we may lose that post offensive threat, but we add another scorer/creator and shot maker on the perimeter.I’d trade any post currently on our roster for JP, but that’s just me. I think we should have let Jp play more freely here and become that pick and pop guy. If Michigan does that I think Jp will excel at it. He’s 6.11 but not really a banger. We don't have a post offensive player on the roster of his caliber and probably won't find one in the portal, but perhaps the coaching staff believes there is more upside in Brown's post play that may mitigate JP's loss. Additionally, and while just my own conjecture Estrella has always seemed to be bit of a jokester, kinda goofy in a likeable manner, but does that playfulness translate over into how serious and dedicated he is about improving his game? He is skilled in the post to be sure and can dominate smaller opponents, but this is semi-pro ball in many respects and if the coaching staff wasn't sure he is made of the right "stuff" to get to next level, they weren't willing to pay for it. Seems they are content in going another direction and surrounding scorers with more defensive minded, complementary bigs. I hope he does well in Michigan. He is going to be paired with Thiam and a great coach to get it out of him. If he can turn into a pick and pop big and shoot consistently from the 3 (which he wasn't really allowed to do at UT) that would help him immensely. Spotlight will be on him to shine as Michigan is likely going to be a Top 3 team moving into next year.
One minute the narrative is “our big donors will come up with whatever money is needed to assemble a roster to give Barnes a final four roster - there is no set budget” to comparative pricing narratives like above? Which narrative is correct?Would you trade our 3 posts (Brown, Rubin & Lue) for JP? It’s easy to say what you said above when you aren’t considering $$$
As I’ve laid out, there’s a budget, acting like there isn’t is naive…we aren’t going out there with a blank check and $50m to fund a team, they’d have been assigning the top 2 guys at every position if so, that’s not reality. One minute the narrative is “our big donors will come up with whatever money is needed to assemble a roster to give Barnes a final four roster - there is no set budget” to comparative pricing narratives like above? Correct, bashing people skeptical that it was just a pipe dream. Thank youThere is nothing to debate, lol. You were selling it hard and bashing posters who were kind of skeptical.
I don't think you had bad info or anything, but given that nothing concrete had happened there was no need to have the attitude. JMO.
To me, this reinjury concern or a miscalculation of fair market valuation on post players are the only 2 narratives with any substance concerning JP.I don’t have the energy for a long internet struggle, but staff view of JP was that he was strong at both ends but high reinjury risk. No update. I think he’s ours. Just a matter of when imo.@Volpatine are you still expecting a public announcement from Juke this weekend or still haven’t heard an update?
I think that different teams assigning different valuations is a lot more feasible than the staff miscalculating market value. Especially considering how fast we moved in the portal I don’t buy for a moment we didn’t have a good handle on the market. To me, this reinjury concern or a miscalculation of fair market valuation on post players are the only 2 narratives with any substance concerning JP.
30% for a big is enough to make them respect the shot and draw defenders away from the rim.Lue has some potential offensive game also, he would’ve ranked 3rd on our team in 3ptFGA this past year, % isn’t great at 30%, but that’s also not horrendous for a big. He also shoots 70% from the FT line so there’s a solid chance that maybe that 3pt % could tick up a bit, much more offensive potential with him than Hastings imo.
I had seen the point guard that went to Michigan from North Carolina talked about one key to his success this past year was the ”freedom “ May let him play with . I wish we had retained JP but our five man sets screens most of the time and doesn’t even look at the basket if nobody is even guarding him . I can understand why he and all the bigs left if they got more money . This coming year we will have three or four guys on the floor looking to score which will be welcome but not sure JP was going to have an opportunity to expand his game. If the coaches didn’t think there was much more upside, the separation makes perfect sense from both perspective .We don't have a post offensive player on the roster of his caliber and probably won't find one in the portal, but perhaps the coaching staff believes there is more upside in Brown's post play that may mitigate JP's loss. This is exactly what I thought. He looked like a totally different and dynamic player before he got injured partway through the year, elite big type (still would probably have been second option or so here). Then, after he was injured, he had to play timid to avoid reinjury.I don’t have the energy for a long internet struggle, but staff view of JP was that he was strong at both ends but high reinjury risk. About the Trilly suggestion that MI has the advantage right now because he doubts Tennessee would wait on Harris, do you imagine that's valid at all from anything you've heard? If Juke went all the way to the draft withdrawal deadline a month from now (however unlikely that may be) before making a decision, do you imagine we're prepared to hold out that long? Obviously he's worth waiting on, but unless the staff knows something they're not disclosing, waiting too long comes with risks. No update. I think [Juke is] ours. Just a matter of when imo.
