DC Coordinators over the years.....

As we got our new coordinator or soon to be (hopefully). it got me thinking about some of our past coordinators and who we have had that have been rock solid and those we dont want ever mentioned again S.S......not going to say his name.

Here is the list of defensive coordinators we have had since the end of the Major's era till today. Which one(s) were OVERALL were the best; not having a great year surrounded by mediocre years.

Tim Banks
Jim Chaney
John Jancek
Justin Wilcox
Monte Kiffin ( my vote for the best overall defensive staff, but never stayed around to grow that side of the ball)
Jim Chavis
Larry Marmie
Larry Lacewell
I still have nightmares about "3rd and Sunseri".

Not being smart here!

I have started very few threads, but love to comment on conversations. That being said, you should really do some research before posting a thread. Names missed, wrong names, wrong side of the ball. Just a few of the issues with your thread off the top of my head.

That’s why I don’t do them, would make me have to look much deeper into something to ensure I cover my bases.
Dude, I am not entering a thesis to become a doctor or to be graded for spelling and or grammar. This is just a conversation but in word form. Just like when you speak to your friends.

People probably won’t take kindly to this but Jon Jancek was rock solid. In 2012 with Doofus we had the #109 total defense. Here is what Jancek did the next 3 years:
2013- #80
2014- #36
2015- #16

And that’s with Botch Jones as the HC.

DO what? I have not heard that story. That would be an interesting tell.
Best coaching schemes and player execution that I have watched.

That Vols team would have been ready to take down any team of the New Years bowl games that year.

Doug Dickey's son (Daryl) sure was able to get in a jive after Tony Robison went down during the Alabama win.

When the game started on TV, the announcers said the we did not belong in that game with Miami.

John Chavis___ You left out one. The 85 Sugar Bowl win was in large par due to the DC. I can't remember his name but he was the best DC in all the years I have watched UT football! I started in late 50's. I just remembered Ken Donohue !
I’m old school too. Donahue is my all-time favorite even though he wasn’t on the OP list.

That Sugar Bowl win is still the best Vols game that I ever watched.

That certainly wasn't the most talented Big Orange squad that I have ever seen, but the '86 Sugar Bowl most certainly was the most complete effort by a Tennessee defense that I have witnessed, particularly against an opponent the caliber of Miami. Dale Jones and his comrades-in-arms played like a pack of marauding wolves.

For fellow gray beards, who was the defensive coordinator(s) under Dickey? Those teams more consistently swarmed to the ball, seemingly 4-6 on virtually every snap, than any era since his departure and the end of our All-American assembly line of linebackers.

Ray Trail coached the LBs and may have been one of the coordinators.

Ray Trail coached the LBs and may have been one of the coordinators.

If so, he changed position assignments at some point. "Trail coached some of Tennessee’s best offensive linemen – Bob Johnson, Chip Kell, Charles Rosenfelder and Mickey Marvin. Three of the four became all-Americans. Two became NFL greats. Three are in the College Football Hall of Fame." Former Vol football coach Ray Trail has died - Knox TN Today. He definitely was an outstanding coach.
