So, who could be in line to take over the reins of the Tennessee defense? Below are a list of names that that could make sense gathered by the Volquest staff.
Ryan Walters (Washington)
Ryan Walters is an intriguing name as he has head coaching experience with Purdue from 2023-2024. Heās the current defensive coordinator at Washington, having just completed his first season. Walters had some crossover with Josh Heupel at Missouri while in Columbia from 2016-2020 and at Oklahoma (2012). Walters, who coaches defensive backs, has coordinator experience with Missouri and Illinois while also making coaching stops at North Texas, Arizona and Colorado.
Travaris Robinson (Georgia)
Travaris Robinson is the current safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs, a position heās held since 2024. Heās made a career working with defensive backs while also spending time at Alabama (2022-2023), Miami (2021), South Carolina (2016-2020), Auburn (2006-2007, 2015), Florida (2011-2014), Texas Tech (2010), Southern Miss (2009) and Western Kentucky (2008). While with the Gamecocks, Robinson served as defensive coordinator. Georgiaās defense ranks second in the SEC in points per game at 15.9 this season. Robinson played wide receiver, defensive back and returned kicks for Auburn from 1999-2002 and played for the Falcons and Buccaneers in 2023 after going undrafted.
Clayton White (South Carolina)
Clayton White is the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for South Carolina, a position heās held since 2021 under Shane Beamer. He was previously the defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach for Western Kentucky from 2017-2020. White coached safeties and was the special teams coordinator for his alma mater, NC State, from 2013-2016 and coached special teams and running backs for UConn from 2011-2012. White has made other stops at Stanford, Western Michigan and Western Carolina throughout his caching career after playing linebacker for the Buccaneers (2003) and Giants (2001-2002). The Gamecocks allowed 22.1 points per game this fall on 353 yards of total defense.
Corey Batoon (Missouri)
Corey Batoon is in his second year as defensive coordinator at Missouri, a squad that ranks No. 10 in total defense this season at 274.8 yards per game. Batoon has an extensive secondary coaching background, having coached safeties at South Alabama (along with DC) from 2021-2023, Hawaii (2018-2019), Florida Atlantic (2017) and Ole Miss (2015-2016). He also served as defensive coordinator while with Hawaii, co-DC with Florida Atlantic and Special Teams Coordinator with the Rebels (also served in two different off the field roles from 2012-2014). Batoon coached defensive line one year at Montana in 1997.
Colin Hitschler (James Madison)
Colin Hitschler is the current defensive coordinator for College Football Playoff bound James Maddison. Heās in his first year in the role with a defense that is
nationally ranked second in yards allowed per game (247.6). Hitschler was the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Alabama in 2024 and held the same role at Wisconsin in 2023. Hitschler has spent time at Cincinnati, South Alabama, Arkansas State, Salve Regina (DIII) and with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in off the field roles.
Jim Knowles (Penn State)
He spent the 2025 season at Penn State after three seasons at Ohio State and could be a candidate to be retained on Matt Campbellās new staff at Penn State. Knowles was previously the DC at Oklahoma State and Duke, was the head coach at Cornell from 2004-09 and was linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Ole Miss in 2003.
