Bowl Game QB

And once again-far from optimal.

Everyone whining and complaining that the season did not live up to THEIR expectations-when they should be happy the wheels didn't fall off completely. We got lucky. Very lucky. And had a schedule which was meh.

Next year our schedule is a big ouch

Two years in a row if Aguilar not having spring practice

Just sounds like a recipe for disaster
Nobody on the roster has shown they can outplay Joey, even though he only had a few months to prepare. Unless they go get a starter from the tp, I dont see how they have a choice but to keep a spot for him

Still doesn't solve the problem. Chances are, it's gonna be the summer before anything happens in the lawsuit-if not later

How you gonna handle spring practice if JA is still a question mark?

You give him reps or you give them to the younger guys in case the lawsuit fails?

Messy
If Pavia's 2024 lawsuit that let him play this year is any indication, he got an injunction in December 2024 which allowed him to play pending the outcome of the lawsuit. While waiting, the NCAA "rolled over" and agreed to let him play before the case was heard. I believe it was "tabled" (or whatever it's called legally) and the Joey A suit is the "amended version" of the same lawsuit with more players added.

I'd expect we'll see a similar motion for an injunction to play filed by Joey A and others if it hasn't already been filed, so we'll almost certainly know before Spring ball.

I assume UT has legal staff looking at the case and advising Heupel and admins on the likelihood of Joey A playing next year.

I hope the NCAA mans up and strongly defends the lawsuit. I don’t think Pavia and JA should be able to play college football professionally until they are 40 years old. The fact that JA is our QB doesn’t affect my opinion. If those two can’t play in the NFL or CFL, their playing days should be over.

I really don't think he's the type of kid to opt out, especially after the Vandy loss. You could tell it cut him deep during that press conference after the game. To me this guy has bled orange from day one and has embodied what its like to be a VFL. I would love to have him back next year. I think Aguilar Avenue would be a nice addition to Knoxville 😁

It's not quite that bad if he wins. It'll mean JUCO no longer counts but you are correct about the direction it's heading.

There's a guy suing at FSU? somewhere like that who wants to play another year because he "only played 5 games" at some previous school.

If 5 doesn't matter, does 10? 12?

His lawsuit is not gonna be settled before the portal opens.

Remember-now only one portal in January.

Basically-Hsuoels gonna have to decide whether or not to commit to him for next season AND hope the lawsuit is successful.

One of our young guys needs to be under center next year. What is the point of having a bench full of 4 and 5 star QBs-and paying the associated NIL bills-and not playing them?
It will be JA or a transfer QB. Zero chance he rolls with GMac or Faizon. Just a matter of who it is

The bowl occurs before Faizon can enroll, I think, and before the portal window opens. We won't be adding a QB for the bowl.

It will be: Joey A, Merk, G-Mac, or one of the walk on QBs already on the team.

I would agree, however we if aren't planning on JA coming back, we will 100% grab a portal QB of some sort to compete with GMac/Faizon. It may not be a great portal QB, but there is a 0% chance that we go into the 2026 seaon with 2 scholarship QBs.

He's talking about 2026, not the bowl game.
Ah, the title of the thread is "Bowl Game QB" so there's that.

IMO, we'll know by the time the portal window opens if Joey A gets an injunction/wins his case to play. Both Joey A and UT need to know by then and I suspect the lawyers will convince the court to do something by then.

If Joey A stays, we probably roll with him and Merk transfers out.

If Joey A leaves, we go to the portal and HOPE both Merk and G-Mac don't leave.

Just my opinion.

Bowl Game QB:
Joey A will start so Heupel can give him a "boost" for additional "post-season" tape to get him a chance at football life after college.
If we are in a good spot around halftime, G Mac takes over - good spot being a 3 score lead.

Who do you guys think will be the starting QB for the bowl game? Nico started the Citrus Bowl in 2023 instead of Joe Milton. Do you think Heupel will go with Aguilar or give Merk or GMac a shot? I would like to see GMac get some real playing time if Aguilar doesn’t start, but I would guess Heupel would go with Merk if not Aguilar.

Milton opted out due to the NFL.

JA will start unless he opts out.

Uh
It is going to be Joey for sure. I would much rather go through an offseason of UT finishing 9-4 instead of 8-5. There is a pretty good chance this is Aguilar's last game in his collegiate career too.

Age has nothing to do with it, it's eligibility and does JUCO count. You can be 30 yrs old and decide to go to college, never played a down of college football and make a team, you'll have the years of eligibility granted to you

Who is this Hsuoels you speak of? Is that a new coach Heupel has hired since the end of the season? :);)

Heupel should play the QB that gives the VOLS the best chance to win! We are playing for winning the Next Game not Next Year. I think Merk transfers regardless since Brandon signed. GMac isn't going anywhere.

Aguilar plays whole game. Heupel's MO is to not play young QBs if a vet is available. Wouldn't be surprised in Merk declares his intent to enter portal before bowl game.

Since portal hits before spring practice, Faizon only has bowl practices to show what he can do (not much opportunity). Given that, a portal QB is a complete given. The level of that QB is what the conversation will be about.

Heupel will have to change his QB philosophy for Faizon to start next year.

We need this win!
Aguilar should play.
Enough of this snowflake stuff...man up and play.
Yeah, but most of our starters that might possibly even remotely make an NFL squad next year are going to opt out. Can we play high school seniors in the bowl? The ones we just got in the high school draft?
