Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I don’t think he had significantly less talent but we probably weren’t as deep. Here is the two deep at Tennessee in 2016:
DE D Barnett all time leading sack leader
DE Kongbo solid back up for Barnett
DT Vickers 7 yr nfl vet
DT Tuttle NFL vetweran
DT D OBrien solid player but eventually kicked off
DT K Mckenzie 5* solid but didn’t live up to his billing
DE DE C vereen solid player
DE L Lewis solid back up
LB Reeves Maybin NFL veteran
LB D Kirkland great player but stayed nicked up
LB C Jumper
LB C Mcdowell solid player
LB Q Sapp up and down back up
CB C Sutton NFL Veteran
CB E Mosley NFL Veteran
NB Double Gauldebs
NB M Foreman
S M Abernathy
S N. Warrior
S T Kelly Jr

I think the front end talent is close to what Banks has had and possibly even better. We do have better depth but you have to take into consideration that other teams do as well. Teams weren’t loaded with veteran transfers when Jancek coached. We never would have had to face Paris back during the old rules.
Jancek wasn’t the DC in 2016. He got let go after the 2015 season. Shoop was DC in 2016. Team had some injuries in 2016 though. Jancek was a better DC than Banks was imo.

Does Heup want Banks?
I think they all had a come to Jesus meeting and this is the last stand for some. Considering the injuries we had this year, everyone may get one more year to prove their worth. Right or wrong, this is how I think this plays out right now.

If I'm correct, Heupel must have some large stones because he's playing with his own legacy. The other part of this equation is the transfer portal in January. If UT brings in some studs on that side of the ball, Banks may stay, if not, he may be gone after the portal.

Just food for thought

If Heupel is going to make a move, what is he waiting for? Signing Day has passed. Is he planning on waiting until after the bowl game? I honestly don't think Banks is leaving of his own accord. DC positions are being filled fast, and no one seems like they want to take him off our hands. After this past season, I find it hard to believe he's a serious contender for a HC position. So it comes down to whether or not Heupel is willing to let him go and if the university is willing to pay his buyout. Heupel has Fulmer loyalty. By that, I mean he seems more loyal to his staff than he is to doing what is best for the team. I'm hoping he proves me wrong, but I have to see it to believe it at this point.

Even if he does make staff moves, we have to hope he doesn't fall back on hiring from within. We need some new blood on this staff. Fresh faces and fresh ideas. The defense especially needs help, but some new ideas on offense wouldn't hurt either.

I'm thinking Heupel finds a reason to retain Banks. Probably to retain everyone. But if he plans on making a move, the longer we wait, the fewer his options IMO. All the coaching turnover created a ton of staff openings, and they are getting filled rather quickly.

If he retains Banks and everyone else then he's gonna find out how ugly things with the fanbase can get

It's a travesty of justice that Mattingly and Murphy didn't get the nod yesterday by the Veterans Committee to be inducted in Baseball Hall of Fame..

Let's see who get voted in on January 20th...

But I may be dazed and confused though...
I was never a Braves fan but Murphy was as good as anyone in the 1980s
Top 2 or 3 in HRs and RBIs for the decade.
Crap team wasn’t his fault.

Jerry Mack may go to Tulane. This says he’s the number one want at this point (as he prolly also is at Toledo).

Toledo candidates:

● Jerry Mack: The Kennesaw State coach just led a worst-to-first turnaround in his debut season, turning a two-win team last year into a 10-win Conference USA champion. A Memphis native, the 45-year-old Mack won at the FCS level, too, and has coached in the SEC and NFL, too.

Vince Marrow [deer lort!]: Toledo fans know the name well. An Ohio native who played and later coached at UT [he means “Toledo” 😂] — and even spent a season as the coach at Springfield High — the 57-year-old Marrow might be the ideal CEO for the times. He built his reputation as one of the nation’s recruiters in 12 seasons as associate head coach at Kentucky and is now the general manager at Louisville. He’s made clear he covets the Toledo job.

● Ryan Beard: The 36-year-old Missouri State coach is widely viewed as a rising star and just led the Bears to seven wins in their first season at the FBS level.

Mike Jacobs: All the 46-year-old Mercer coach does is win. A Maumee native and former Ohio State offensive lineman, he is 94-23 in 10 seasons at the Division II and FCS level.

Jim Harding: Another Maumee native, the 2001 Toledo grad is in his 12th season at Utah, where he’s regarded among the best offensive line coaches in the country.

● Tim Banks: The 53-year-old Tennessee defensive coordinator has strong MAC ties. Banks, a Detroit native, played at Ball State and coached at Bowling Green and Central Michigan.

Banks is in hard position, as is Heupel. Ive talked about this potential issue in coaching for a bit. Where is supply? How many tenured DC's want to leave their posts? Why leave a $2.15M job for a HC gig at Akron or Toledo? He wont make that kind of money.

Banks doesnt seem like type that wants to grind on recruiting trail. So, going to a mid tier program or building say a Memphis up, is out.

Say we did fire him. Where you gonna go? Coaches are clinging to jobs now. Why? Rev share and $ is more static. Egos like Kelly and Kiffin are only reason folks change.

Options are, 1) Pay more money to someone and hope we get a non mercenary, who fits culture, what we want to do, and who Heupel trusts. 2) Pay Banks' contract out. 3) lose few recruits he has locked down. Or,

4) wisely save the money and spend in porthole. 5) keep what we have ( imagine there's an injured Ton-Ton nearby, and all you had to do was grab it, and rip its head off). 6) keep continuity, but lay out in detail your expectations, including mandating time on the road. 7) Banks fielded an above average defense last year, if i'm Heupel I give him through porthole season to show he truly wants to keep his job, and more importantly wants to win championships.

That's the thing. We have higher standards here. Being the passive, relaxed guy has its place. But, 'at the end of the day', we want to be in the playoffs and to win. not the mcb.

He's safe until probation is over. Probation lasts through the summer of '28. So he has at least two more seasons to regain that good will.
I don't think the majority of the fan base believes that the lingering sanctions/probation are a true impediment to recruiting and winning at the highest level. Especially when they look at the middle of the state and see Peabody boat-racing us in Neyland, 2-3 years removed from being a 6A high school team. People aren't going to stay engaged through two more seasons of poor fundamentals and inconsistent effort.

What do we think of the matchups?

James Madison at Oregon
Bama at Oklahoma
Tulane at Ole Miss
Miami at Texas A&M

I think Bama might get ran out of the stadium...cause OU's defense is better than Georgia's. I'm pretty sure Oregon lays the wood to James Madison...Miami at A&M (the battle of the Notre Dame losses) should be a good game, but honestly Tulane at Ole Miss is the one I'm actually excited to see.

OU’s offense is trash tho. Close game.

Would love to see Tulane beat Ole Miss but they lost by 5 TDs when they played during regular season.

Oregon big prob.

Miami - A&M should be best game. No idea who wins that.

Jancek’s 2015 defense was pretty solid. Minus a few big plays (Florida’s several 4th down conversions and running out of gas against OU), his defense performed well over the season.

I don’t blame Jancek for the OU loss. Butch got conservative and played Fulmer ball and tried to sit on a 17-0 lead. Our defense was on the field most of the 2nd half and it finally ran out of gas late in the 4th quarter. Jancek doesn’t get enough credit for the incredible gameplan he had for Baker Mayfield and that OU offense, but it’s overshadowed and forgotten because OU came back and won.
