Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Heupel:

“It’s different this cycle. Just the timing of the portal in general. I think it’s a positive for us,”

“We’ll look at what we signed in this class, what we have coming back and then attack the portal. How we continue to grow our roster to be ready to go compete and win a championship.”

Any specific positions?: “I wouldn’t say anything as of right now, but certainly here over the coming days and weeks, we will look hard at that,” “We’re finishing up exit interviews with our current players now and then be ready to attack that when it comes.”

VQ:

Tennessee needs more bodies to fill a true rotation at safety, but more than anything, the Vols need an impact player or two in the back end. Tennessee would love to find an eraser in the portal and there will be plenty of attention focused on finding one.

There’s no sure answer at the STAR position right now looking ahead to 2026.

Tennessee will likely try to add a few transfers to fill in across all spots on the defensive front.

If Aguilar is not in play and Heupel wants a qualified quarterback to command his predominantly experienced offense he has returning, the transfer portal is an option to find a signal-caller. There should be plenty of options, but they won’t be cheap. Still, you got to have a quarterback.

Fun fact - Johnny Majors didn’t win 9 games or more at Tennessee until year 7

If we win the bowl game, Heupel will have won at least 9 games every year but his first. He’s also exceeded 9 wins twice, which hadn’t been done at TN even once since 2007.

He walked into this job and immediately was handed a large NCAA cloud over his program. He made no excuses and went to work and got us right back into the mix of the college football world. After the years we spent on the outside looking in we should be grateful for him.

I’ve been very negative since the Vandy game. But this is the exact response we needed out of Heupel today and we shouldn’t even be surprised tbh.
Well said 🙌🏻👏🏻👊🏻

does Bey get a look at RB?

Kid played QB in HS and rushed for over 4k yards in his career.

He's basically a full blown freak athlete with ELITE speed, he could probably run 4.3s at the combine tomorrow. We're going to have to find away to get him touches often...return, RB, WR... he's a weapon

Man they really fd up a coach firing.

You fired your guy and didn’t have a guy to replace him.

Went after a half dozen trying to lure em away from other places and got rejected every time.

After being turned down by 1 or 2 you gotta
Re think what you’re doing.

1: Ok , who is not coaching some other team now?
Or
2: What lower level coach if hired can bring a stud QB and a few more players with him?

1: some a holes for sure but; Brian Kelley, Bobby Petrino, Urban Meyer .
Gruden: dying to coach again
Others?
2: North Texas Coach with Mestemaker.
Ok st grabbed him up.

Get Someone before signing day, geesh

Tweet got deleted: It was a twitter post allegedly from Legend Bey saying he is losing access to his accounts because he didn't sign with the team his mother and brother wanted him too. It seems fake.

I agree with this.

Dudes a smart football guy and won a superbowl and dying to coach again. Can’t believe someone ( Penn st) hasn’t offered him a job.
100 mill to a BYu HC and you get turned down, Gruden ain’t turning that down

I have a theory on Penn State...based on how things went down.

My theory is a very real "for cause" event was discovered. (look at previous James Franklin scandals etc.) both parties agreed to simply firing him mid-season and let things be what they were going to be.

Why I think this theory is legit, James Franklin very quickly took a well paying P4 job at VA Tech which will mitigate a TON of his buyout owed by Penn State.

If you look at Brian Kelly's firing, and even Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss...usually a HC or the previous school is bitter and they make that obvious with how they handle the aftermath.

But at Penn State neither school or Franklin have really been at odds...so I believe something happened neither want out because it will have a negative impact on both.

I think their next HC is coaching somewhere this weekend...(even if a coordinator) and they're simply allowing him to finish up because they knew who they wanted and all the other names floating about are happening as smoke or to get those guys more money by their agents elsewhere.

Don't be coming in here with facts. It's simply NFL bias has given everybody unreasonable expectations. Plus the real question is who are you gonna replace him with that is better. There is no easy button. Poor kid has been given way more blame than he deserves this year.
Absolutely. Well said.

El o el. Trust me he's gone.

And, if you like Heupel, you better hope he's gone. If not, he'll take Heupel with him.
Are you really saying that if Banks is fired/leave Heup goes with him? What precedent is there for something like that happening. Well there was that one time, it happened on the second Tuesday of Never.
Let's Banks goes to be the DC somewhere else. What's Heup going to do, be the defensive backs coach, waterboy? Maybe Banks will tell the HC that he is done because Banks brought his own.
You say no, he'll be a HC, yeah at Directional U or Foggy Bottom Tech. Do you really think Heup would leave HC at Tennessee to be the OC at Southwest Eastern Junior College?
Fire Banks! Fire Heuple! My idiot dog, if he could talk, would come up with something like this stupid crap. He probably would agree right now.
In words of the philosopher, R-E-L-A-X, we have had 5 winning seasons in a row and 2 10 win seasons.
I vote for going back to the ways of the previous 15 years. give me a break. This crap needs to stop.

I don’t believe that for a minute, the last part.
They have talked to and tried to hire guys .
They have just been turned down.
Plan H might be some guy coaching this weekend but to go through all the motions and look like fools if that was the plan to begin with is beyond stupid.
Would have been far better to say we’re waiting until everyone is done and then hire the guy we want.
