The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

My son is asking for a 9mm compact to start shooting more with friends etc. I don't want to break the bank on his first one, so I'm looking to stay sub-$500. The CZ P10C looks like a good option to me. Maybe IWI as well. Canik?

Thoughts?

Stopped by my LGS and looked this afternoon. I can good a good price on a Canik MC9LS, Ruger RXM, or (larger option) IWI Masada. The CZ P10 slide lock is a little difficult, and that kind of turned me off.

Thoughts on the above?

I have a P10C and it’s one of my favorites. It’s reliable and a tack driver. I think Yankee has one as well.

Ruger. Security 9
Cheap and reliable

Range USA has the RXM for 379 and I get 10% off with my membership.... 340 seems fair for a cool new model. Reviews look good. I think my son would like the look, too.

The RXM is a Glock Gen 3 clone, and I mean that as a good thing. Good amount of Gen 3 parts will work with it. There's a lot worse you can buy for more money.

Palmetto State Armory Daggers. You can get them with threaded barrels and with optic mounts for a very good price. Mine has been fantastic.

My son bought a Stoeger STR-9C a couple of years ago from Palmetto State for about $200. We've fired about 200 rounds through it and haven't had any trouble at all (I was a little surprised really). It's been a great range and practice gun for cheap.

I hit the range for a test run. The RXM felt comfortable, nice front glow sight, great stock trigger, shoots where you point, and the price was right. It's basically a modular G19, with an optics-ready plate, and there are a lot of cool grip/lower mods hitting the market if he ever wants to customize. He will be happy.

I know I would be happy with it, good call!

CZ. You can stop there. Canik is good as well.

CZ > Canik though IMO

@kiddiedoc it may be too late, and you may have done this, but its always worthwhile letting him hold them and get his feed back. even if you come back later to buy to keep the final selection a surprise.

I have been dead set on some pistols, gone in with the intent to buy, handled it in the store and said "nope".

That actually happened to me with the P10C. The slide lock is really, really awkward.

I wanted this to be a total surprise, so I didn't involve him. He really hasn't had enough experience to have a preference yet anyway.

Side note: my other son and I took my new-ish H&R Garand to the range the other day and had fun. It's a beast to hold on target for long and packs a punch, but a very consistent rifle.

We also met a super nice guy next to us who was shooting something that seemed different. He introduced us to the 22TCM, which he also let us shoot through his 1911. Feels like a 22LR but blows out a fireball producing a well-over 2000 fps bullet. Cool gun.

It's literally in the same location as a Glock, the RXM, etc.

Now it is flatter, but the way I use a slide lock (which is rare anyway), I don't really notice a difference.

It's in the same spot but quite difficult to operate. Turns out that's a common criticism. Obviously, there are easy aftermarket replacement fixes, but that was going to be one more expense.

Who the f*** are you weirdos using the slide stop anyway?!?!
It's his first gun, bud. He needs to learn how to operate it.

I like to teach safety checks, locking open with a clear chamber at the range, and sometimes full mags are easier to insert with the slide back.
