Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

According to who?

Not saying he did or didn't, but without being there I take camp reports (especially from VQ folks) with a grain of salt.

I will say I am in the camp that GMac can be the dude next year. Joey only had an abbreviated offseason to learn the offense and was able to run it at a high level.

How would you know unless you play them?

And what if that means paying Joey $3 million and limiting roster spots for upgrades?

You don’t think Joey will want to raise is $1.3 NIL after the year? I bet it would cost us $2.5-$3 million to retain him now. There goes your 2 safeties and 1-2 DT from the portal.
Not to mention retaining other guys
I like JA and appreciate everything he has done for us but I also feel the same way I did about JM and I’m ready for new young guys to have their chance
We didn’t recruit them to sit on the bench
I don’t get as mad at young guys making mistakes
Older slow guys making mistakes is unacceptable

I missed that what happened?…was that the Kirby smart deal? Or was that someone else
Admittedly, most of it is conjecture, but there were reports of friction between him and Nick because of media comments.

Nick also said that he was spending too much time focusing on FAU .

I do agree with you though, if he has matured, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Imagine having a fanbase so stupid that they would be dying for a head coaching change only one year removed from the cfp THIS late in the cycle. Even if you completely disregard all the good our coach has done here… Yeah let’s pick from the leftovers and scraps of coaches out there.

This is so stupid.
Who is wanting that?

Are people on twitter posting it?

That’s crazy. I haven’t seen one person in the forum ask for a coaching change except for the defensive staff. So that must be who you’re referring too.

I get the sentiment, but I’m less concerned about the record and more concerned that we witnessed some things this season that makes me wonder if 8-4 might not be the floor.

I think it starts with a different direction on defense. I think it continues with hiring a real special teams coach.

To be fair, we also witnessed a few things that made me think this was a 10-2 season too.

Max hits a normally routine FG and we beat Georgia....if the OL shows up for the OU game we don't hand them 3 scores off stupid turnovers and we win that game.

Defense has to improve, not just because of this season though. Banks' put the same **** on the field for 5 years and only 1 of those did we have the horses for it to be successful and Ohio State made that look like the fluke year.

Let's try to be reasonable people. We lost our starting qb from a playoff team in January. We replaced him with a qb who was rejected for our old qb. Realistically we probably had no business winning more than 6 or 7 games. Joey was a great stop gap but he lost us some games. He ain't Joe Burrow and no reasonable person could expect him to more an emergency stop gap.

Banks’ defense is really holding Josh back. Even when it’s not giving up a bunch of points, we still seem to be on the field forever. We run a rhythm offense that preys on tired defenses; we’d be better off running a defensive scheme that wasn’t so afraid to get beat downfield as long as it resulted in more 3-6 and outs.

Nico sucked. What a blessing. Winning 6-7 with a major upgrade at QB?

Come on… The downgrade was what we lost on defense… Essentially Pearce, McCoy, Gibson, ONL, Thomas, Simmons… And the talent behind them was not good. Need to recruit better.

"...a fanbase..."

What did I miss? How many people are calling for CJH to be fired?

His defense had gotten better statistically each year until this year
Even last year in our two regular season losses they gave up more then 400 yds before OSU kicked our asses
He’s not a good DC
He doesn’t show any fire and the defense plays like it’s coach

SOFT and TIMID

Thing is Banks has the best positional coaches, based on recruiting it seems clear more $$$ is going to that side of the ball too AND Heupel is hands off completely...but giving up TOP, yards AND points are legit the 3 main things you don't want a defense to do. TFLs don't mean a damn thing if the team is converting 70% of 3rd and longs anyway.

No joke, I had someone call me yesterday and tell me we needed to fire Heupel after ESD and bring in Manny Diaz.

I would be willing to bet we have more than that to spend.

Regardless, we're going to have to add a portal QB if JA leaves. It's just a fact. Maybe not a 2 million plus portal QB, but there is zero chance we are riding into 2026 with 2 scholarship QBs. And I doubt whatever QB we seek is going to be a Navy Shuler or Gaston Moore sort of QB.

Seeing as QB is the most important position on the field, giving Joey a couple million to run it back with a year in this system under his belt, I can't imagine anyone else being a better fit in 2026.

Watching Auburn Saturday night. Very similar base scheme, BUT players played fast, pursued wide open, took great angles. When you're not sure what to do all of these things suffer.
i've said 100 times, now 101. i don't know anything expect what I can see with my eyes. This defense was slow. That's a recruiting thing.

How and why did our defensive staff think we were good?

What is dumb as hell is saying someone with almost two years of development can’t lead this program. In fall camp, George out performed everyone and the goal was to put weight on him during the year to potentially start if Joey didn’t work. He was a true freshmen this year and outperformed everyone in camp.

Know what you’re talking about before saying something is dumb. Some of the best QBs played their redshirt freshmen year and balled out. Remember a guy named Manzel?
Look at redshirt freshman QB at OSU as a good example.

Year 1: 29.1 points per game given up, allowed 422 total yards
Year 2: 22.8 points per game given up, allowed 405 total yards
Year 3: 20.3 points per game given up, allowed 335 total yards
Year 4: 16.1 points per game given up, allowed 293 total yards
Year 5: 28.8 points per game given up, allowed 396 total yards

The 3 years when Heupel ran his offense the way he wants the defense was pretty consistently bad. The 2 years when the offense changed to play slower with more rushing and the defense looked better because of it...I don't think Banks is a good DC and I think his best results are related to an experienced team AND an offense controlling more of the time of possession.

Maybe I read OP wrong. USC, there was no mob angry that he was leaving. There was a mob that was angry that he was still there. Until he wasn't.

Kiffin is a classic narcissist with zero empathy or ability to see or care about long-term consequences, and truckloads of selfishness and need for attention. He's proven everywhere he's been to be toxic and destructive. When you lay down with diseases, you're lucky to come out of it with something treatable.

They'll be fine eventually. (They deserve everything they got.)

LSU on the other hand... It'll be a show. They're basically betting their future on a 17th Century Tortuga prostitute that'll steal all their money while they sleep, and then leave them with nothing but a lifetime of diseased regret.
Scurves.

Btw good call on the narcissism.

Unpopular opinion:

Heupel is not the QB whisper we make him out to be, evidence:

-Hendon Hooker was already on the roster when Heup got here, Heup still brought in Milton and started milton over him until he got hurt, he essentially lucked into Hooker
-Milton was average
-Tayven Jackson: bust
-Nico: Bust
-Merk: likely transferring, therefore bust
-joey: decent, just very sporadic
GMac: AP makes it sound like he wont be the starter next year, essentially said on a pod that the QB for next year isnt on the roster yet
Brandon: ?
He turned Hooker from backup ACC QB to SEC Offensive Player of the Year
