Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I don’t understand why some of these programs aren’t looking at Bob Chesney at JMU. Or an outside the box hire like Patricia and let him bring in an NFL staff. I love that they all seem infatuated with Kiffen or other “name” coaches who ESPN pundits try to say are the best. Lots of good coaches and many seem focused on a few.

I heard Penn State was giving Chesney a hard look. Chesney and Sumerall are probably both good football coaches, but the thing that makes me hesitate on both are, they took over very good situations. The previous coaches at both schools are the ones that built them into top G5 programs. They could work out but you have to be more than a football coach, you have to rebuild a power program.

I’ll be honest I don’t understand no pursuing Matt Campbell. I bet they’ve dropped off a bit (this year they are absolutely ravaged by injuries) but that’s a traditionally a 3-4 win program. Dude has killed it there. He’s a damn good football coach but he’s not a sexy fire right now because his teams dipped a bit. It’s Iowa state. He’s not going to have them at 10 wins every year.

Previous years, everyone tried to get him (Including us I think) He is very loyal to his team.

What about them? No SEC championships. No SEC championship appearances. 0-3 vs Georgia etc etc. is that the expectation? Surly not considering the ticket prices, talent fees and the football budget
This is another level to my line of thinking regarding Heupel. He is a good coach and someone who will have us good more years than not. But everything about the athletic department that Danny White has put together has screamed “we want to be elite.” I don’t think Heupel fits that mold at all. He’s a good coach, but not anywhere near the level of the other 2 major men’s programs. He’s also coaching the sport that most fans care most about. It’s gonna be interesting to see this dynamic play out over the next year.

He can fit that mold but he has to have the right staff. He’s a good football coach but calling plays while trying to be the head coach is too much for him. I think every great HC has to understand he has to give up some responsibility to other people that are good at their jobs. Golesh called plays here. Our current OC does not. Yes the offense was much improved over last years version but it still killed us at times this year. The only games I left thinking “that was an awesome play calling game” was Florida and Kentucky.

He is an offensive guy so he has to give up the defense to someone else. Tim Banks clearly is not that guy. He had no answers all year long and really on had a good game against an abysmal Florida team that mailed it in. Time to be that elite “CEO”

We're gonna Mullen him aren't we?

Danny White is a good AD, he’s not gonna emotionally react and do that. Mullen was also being super lazy on recruiting. Our current class is incredible. Now if he just manages 8-4 next year we can START the questioning of him. Realistically I think we’d have to go the entire Faizon era missing playoffs for it to make sense to look a different direction

Yet many here will keep on with the excuses. We are regressing. Defense is horrid and people defend banks because of one good season. Every other one has been bad.
It’s time to fire Banks period. Keep the talent coming in. It’s a young team. Portal hard for DB’s and CJH needs to have the course corrected. He has 2026 and 7. Get to work

I think Auburn probably retains their current DC, it seems that’s an ask of the coaches they’ve talked to. So who are names that you’d like to pursue as DC with the Auburn guy probably off the table

I’ll have to look some more up again, Blake Blaker from LSU would be one of them

That’s probably good. LSUs defense was drastically improved this year and not the problem with that team. Its a shame Baylor is keeping Aranda as their HC, that would have been great.
