'25 Recruiting Forum: Official Tennessee versus Vanderbilt Pre-game/Game Thread

I defend the issues with the roster because I understand all of the NCAA sanctions and how they affect recruiting. Do you?
(You don't)

I defended the signing of Joey Aguilar (A LOT of you bitched about it all offseason) because I understood the difference in quality talent in the winter transfer portal and the spring transfer portal, do you?

I defended the mental errors on offense because I understand that we replaced NINE starters on offense and what that level of turnover can do to the play on the field, do you?

I defend the defensive struggles because I understand that having a young defense means it's very likely that inexperienced guys will play out of position, do you ?

I defended coach Elarbee and coach Pope when you guys were screaming at the top of your lungs to get rid of them because I understood they were having to work with a hodgepodge of different players over the last 4 years while balancing roster building with putting experienced players on the field, do you?

I defended the rotating in and out of OL, DL, CB, and Safeties in games that we were winning because I understand that getting kids who have only played high school ball more reps is more important that running up the score, do you?

What I didn't do is say that Heupel doesn't have any faults or is free from criticism. Ever. You guys just complain about everything this man does, so I'm going to call you out on it when you guys try to place blame on him for every little thing. Which you do.
He goes for it on 4th down? "HEYPEL SHOULD HAVE KICKED IT" Heupel kicks a field goal? "HE PLAYS WITH A LOSER MENTALITY", Heupel needs to shave, Heupel needs to be more personable in press conferences, Heupel better bring Boo Carter back, Heupel should have never brought Boo back, Heupel should run the ball more, Heupel should pass the ball more, Heupel needs to run a quicker offense, Heupel needs to slow the offense down. IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT THIS MAN DOES, YOU GUYS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT. So yeah, I'm going to defend him when guys who think that coaching college football is as easy as playing Madden say some dumb ass **** to tarnish the reputation of a guy who has given us some of the best sports moments of our lives. The guy works 100 hours a week to try to make you happy and I think he deserves a little bit of a break after this horrible offseason.

Here's a reminder of what he's done for you:

-Only Tennessee coach to beat Nick Saban
-first time in school history we had the #1 offense in the country.
-first time we beat bama 2/3 times since 2006
-won 3 out of the last 4 games against Florida. First time since 2004
-Winningest three year stretch (30 wins) since 1998-2000
-29-7 record at home
-Beat the gators in the Swamp. One of only 3 coaches to do it since like the 50s.

I don't think Heupel is perfect. But if you want to place blame on him for every tiny thing, even stuff completely out of his control... yeah I'm going to call you out on it. I don't blindly defend him. You guys just blindly accuse him.
I didn’t read a 4 th of that because it’s the same ole tired excuses you use for everything.

Clue: we aren’t alone. Every team has many of the same issues and some different ones.

We could be on probation for the next 50 years and still should out recruit and out talent Vandy . Period. They are not more talented . Just a better team from better coaching.

And I don’t care if we sucked for 15 years before Heupel,
Vandy and Indiana both sucked for 90 out of the last hundred years and both are better than we are today!

I think it’s lack of discipline. Coach wants everybody to like him, doesn’t want to make the players upset. I think it affects every aspect of the team.
Could be. He could delegate that to his assistants. Good cop/bad cop type of thing. I think he keeps his hand out of the defense. Need a d coordinator that demands excellence and knows a thing or two about scheme.

You omitted HISTORICAL LOSS to VANDERBILT at NEYLAND and 0 for Georgia plus having a Charim soft team that QUITS in the face of adversity.

My high school basketball HC was a real @$$ but everyone respected him...first day of practice he politely said ," not all of you guys will like me but I'm okay with that". These days kids are sensitive...

We didn’t beat any quality team this year very concerning. Just got embarrassed at home by candy don’t think Josh is going to be the answer here.
He might have the ability himself but no HC can achieve much success with subpar assistants.
If their isn’t major changes starting with the OC and DC then you’re most likely right.

Oh well sorry that I tried to have a conversation with you but you got reading fatigue lol.
Vanderbilts roster is 40% seniors and 25% juniors. Our roster is 11% seniors and 50% freshman. EXPERIENCE MATTERS. Just once again proving my point that you don't understand college football. The loudest ones are always the least informed.

Now do recruiting rankings.

no other major top 50 program would hire Joey Halzle as OC.

Do any of those schools have Heupel or a similar level of play calling HC? Nope, so it's a ridiculous point. Halzle is a glorified QB Coach that Heupel trusts and likes to work with. QB coach and OC should never be criticized without it landing squarely in CJH. It's his baby that he has built his coaching career around and it can win but requires balance and the right personnel. We are close roster wise. We need some continuity on offense and better defensive play on critical downs.

Why? I'm talking about experience because the differential between the two teams is MASSIVE. Choose to ignore the fact that half of our team are freshmen if you just want to continue being an uninformed fan, I guess.

Vandy ranks in the 40s on average in recruiting. Our freshman should be better than their 5th year 2 stars.

You can puke whatever excuse you want. This was about as pathetic a performance as I've ever seen.

Also, Heup is in charge of the roster. Maybe he should have gotten more from the portal. Maybe he got out coached in that regard too. Maybe you're just an uninformed sheep, I guess.

It’s not our roster, it’s Heupels , maybe explain how CF works to him or have Clark explain it , seems like he understands it better.
I understand it. I just don’t think it’s a very good job of roster management by Heupel.

We all need to take this loss in stride, be realistic.

Pavia likely won the Heistman tonight.

Vanderbilt has done this to nearly every SEC they've played. This isnt Kentucky. Vanderbilt is likely a playoff team.

Tim Banks has one of the youngest defenses in the SEC.

He also has one of the top recruiting budgets, and is now in year 5.

With everything we lost to the NFL, he should have had a better grasp on where his roster is/was.

This isnt just about the Vandy loss. This is about getting flat out embarrassed, at home, in Y5 at home, again.

I hate it, would love to have continuity. Would also like to have a functioning defense. Has to he close if not dead last in SEC.

I'm not sorry. We are Tennessee. We are better than this. This is beyond fixable, its time.

Read the bottom of this article. Please please try to understand it. Read it slowly and absorb it. When you come across terms you don't understand like "evaluation period", take a second and google what an evaluation period is. Really try to absorb it man. I'm trying to help you be a better fan.
