The Sky is Not Falling, but There are Cracks

Remember at the beginning of the season when the talk was this was the most talented defense Heupel has had? That is very alarming and should be a red flag regarding a certain member of the coaching staff.

Say all you want about Gibson and McCoy injuries but they doesn’t explain the overall atrociousness this defense has been all year.

I don't know that I agree. This season went off the rails at critical moments, and with LSU / Florida making changes to get competitive again, and then you have Texas / Texas A&M / OU / Alabama / Georgia all showing more progress ... I don't know. All those programs have more momentum and some have more resources than Tennessee. The window may be closing. There may not even be a window to close. I just don't know.

You have to be competitive with the teams at the top to matter in a super conference. You have to. And getting demolished by Vanderbilt at home is not that.

Garner gets a pass because of his track record. Fire everyone else.

Clark Lea in this short term should not compete with a Josh Heupel volunteer team. Just shows why players matter so much. Hendon Hooker. Jalin. Tillman. Wright. And then the defense with pierce. And secondary we didn’t have this year. Also luck is involved. At all times.

Losing to a black swan vandy team when you arent having a good year is acceptable. Vandy would've won 7 games and lost to tenn without Pavia winning a stupid lawsuit that never shouldve happened. Think bigger picture (not that the outlook there is much better).

This isn’t a good team. It isn’t a well coached team. It isn’t a disciplined or hard playing team. None of that has anything to do with “black swans “ or court cases. And Pavia absolutely had a right to win that lawsuit.

We didn't beat a P4 team with a winning record.

Never said it was a good team. Im saying vandy needed a shocking lawsuit win and tenn to have bad team just to have this outcome. You think vandy is winning with average joe back there?

I'm still not sold on A&M. Give them our schedule and they may well have lost 3 or 4 games.

I think Miss State took this team to OT with a bunch of average Joes. Again we didn’t beat a P4 team with a winning record. This is a 6-6 team next year at the rate we’re going.

Hat tip to the Commodores; they played a great game. However, I hope that Heupel and Danny White recognize that losing to Vanderbilt in Neyland stadium, especially coupled with the squandered opportunities against UGA, OU, and Bama, is completely unacceptable. There has to be accountability for this loss and this team's inability to make the right plays in the big moments this season.

That being said, what the program needs are tweaks, not wholesale changes. An assistant or two, perhaps a coordinator, need to be replaced. I don't think elaboration is necessary there. This thing is a work in progress, and we have to remember both where we came from recently (the post-Fulmer dark age) and where we come from historically (a top program in college football). Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater...but definitely get rid of that bathwater though it's friggin nasty.

TL;DR version: Someone needs to be fired, but if you think that someone is Heupel you need to put down the bottle and step back from the ledge.
There are cracks? Bro... we got slammed through a table from the top ropes by hornswoggle!
