The Official #17 vs. #3 Houston Game Thread, 6:00 PM ET, TNT

It's not like they changed the rules and that we weren't aware of them.

I wish we would stop being so ass hurt every time something doesn't go our way
You can understand the rules and still criticize it. There was always going to be 2 great teams that don’t play for the title. Those rules can create strange scenarios. I just think they should distribute the money more evenly for the top 4 teams based on a champion that merely wins on differential. A $700k difference between two teams that go 3-0 is kind of dumb to me.

He called it shady. It is not shady. That's what is absurd

I was just responding to you suggesting we knew the rules and some complaining. Yes, it’s a poor way to pay two teams $1 million and $300k respectively. Poor processes get criticized.
Meh. We knew the format upfront. Direct your criticism to UT or Barnes for showing up. They didn't spring a trap

Yeah he was very impressive today. Glad he came back and sank those two clutch FTs at the end too. You can tell he has put in the work and is perhaps playing with a chip on his shoulder.

Also, Amaree Abram was great today. I kind of forget he was a really good pick up this offseason and he proved it today. Great all around game.

Proud that TN never gave up and just stayed on point. We pretty much beat Houston at their own game. We couldn’t do that back in March. I’ll tip my hat to that Flemming kid for Houston. He was a problem.

Everyone understood the format before the tournament started. You may not like it, but it is what it is. If we don’t play for championship, no big deal.

Only gripe is having to play the top ranked team in the tourney. For seeding purposes at least. Made for a great game and experience though.

Of course you show up because every team gets money for playing. Just a dumb response. Both can be true. This isn’t difficult.
What's dumb is crticizing something you voluntarily agreed to show up to while knowing the rules.

So if you don't Iike it then criticize the people who said yes. Not the people who invited you. If I ran this thing would I do it different? Yes. But that's not relevant and we are barking up the wrong tree

Every team

Every team gets $1 million to start with. These are additional payouts for finishing in the top four.

Aren't you glad Barnes didn't follow your advice to sit him the rest of the game?
Not sure I said to sit him the rest of the game, but it's early and there's no coffee in this stinking rental so my mind is pretty foggy right now. Having said that, I do think Ament just wasn't functioning well last night against a physical team/defense like that. Felt it was kind of a shock for him and frankly, we seemed to function better when Ament was out. I'm sure he will handle things much better now that he's seen and experienced an opponent like Houston. If anything, he will know he's got to get much stronger and develop more physicality going forward.

No problem if we can go 3 and 0 I am very happy. Don't care who gets to be called champion.
Let's be real about this "tournament". It's goal isn't to crown the best team. It's a chance for teams to get some early season tests in a tournament format and for all involved to make some money. We miss the championship game because instead of playing two weak sisters back to back, we drew the highest ranked team in the tournament and had a close war with them.

IMO, we got way, way more from playing Houston than winning their version of a "tournament" championship.

I am somewhat...well... provocative in my own way I guess....

Your takes are fine. It would be boring if everyone had the same view on everything:. Plus it’s not like Ament set the world on fire after they brought him back either. But at least he plugged in and played a role and stopped costing us the game. Hopefully, he learned a lot from getting beat up a little.

I don’t play on the team, so I can criticize what I please. It’s perfectly reasonable to suggest it’s a dumb process, just like you admit. I don’t get why this is difficult and a big deal.

I got that. $1 million versus $300k extra for two teams that go 3-0 is odd. They didn’t think it through. We will have the best win of the tournament. Yes, the team gets rewarded with a resume builder, but the players don’t get the ultimate reward for them.

This isn’t hard to understand. I really don’t care at the end of the day, but it would make more sense if the payouts were a little more equitable.

It's how the cookie crumbles sometimes. Did anyone expect Michigan to blow the doors off of Auburn? Did anyone expect Gonzaga to dominate both their opponents? Yes we got the best win but **** happens in this type of format... Just win today take our NIL earnings and move on.

As long as the NIL for the players is equal for the final 4, I'm good with playing whomever we do tomorrow. It's another opportunity for a quality win and going 3-0 with two high quality wins is a tournament win regardless of a trophy or not.

Sampson is on something about the fouls. They were fouling way more than they got called for, so us only shooting 29 free throws was a win for them. 8 of those 29 were them fouling on purpose in the final 35 seconds. They committed 21 total fouls, 17 before they started fouling to stop the clock. We were called for 15 total.
When your team plays contact D like Houston, then the coach is constantly lobbying for the officials to not call a foul on every possession. There were 10+ shooting fouls we didn’t get called for us plus the constant off ball grabbing and holding. Houston could have easily been whistled for 50 fouls.

I hate that our players won’t be playing for the most money when they earned what is probably the most impressive win of the tournament. That was always a possibility, though, in this tournament. Is what it is. Go get another W today.

UT fans should create a Go Fund Me to make up the difference. Then it would be cool if the players created a charitable foundation and shared the money with Children’s Hospital or Emerald Youth.
