Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Ummm…. Thanks but I’m good. One nephew from here and one from Knoxville will attending with me. We got a group of 8 going I think
Well if one of them should come down with the flu, or held prisoner in a basement or something totally common and not suspicious, I'm a great fill in.

Oh I fully understood now and understood then, but I’m one of those that you gotta show me you’ve got it together this time before I’ll believe it. I base everything on results and what my eyes see. We beat a team that we darn well should have beaten and that’s a good positive thing. A W in the swamp is always a good thing regardless of either teams record. I personally kind of hate we won’t have the Gators on the schedule every season anymore even though it’s probably a positive thing for us, but that’s just me.

Can't say I'm sorry about that; we've had a notoriously difficult schedule for years with Bama, FL, and GA yearly games. Who you are was always based highly on the number of wins. When it was decided we had have playoffs to crown a NC, then the wins really became critical because that whole concept became the measuring stick. We don't have a championship caliber team this year, but with "good" losses to Bama, GA, and OK (who may all be part of the NC party this year), it's a moot point. We aren't going to the ball with three losses. It's now all about manageable schedules.

Don't know if anybody else caught the OR coach dissing the SEC. Take a look at their schedule and laugh at the comment. ATM has had a very very weak SEC schedule, and the results show, but OR doesn't really hold a candle to what pretty much any SEC team has played.

""We didn't play Chattanooga State today, right? Like some other places," Lanning said in his postgame news conference, alluding to the SEC teams that scheduled nonconference games this week. "We competed. It's tough playing nine conference games. It's tough playing in this league."

Held them to 271 yards. D showed up for the most part. Just wish we had a turn over or a safety.

Seems like both of their scoring drives came on LONG drives of 90+

I've thought for years that our FL problem had a lot to do with when we played them. It's a very uneven playing field when you play in the swamp in the summer. Things even up significantly when we've played them late in the season.

100% this. We dominated the 2nd half also btw folks. Our 2 drives took over 13mins of the 15min 4th quarter...and we could have scored at the end if we wanted to. We ran the ball down their throats in 7min long drives...which a 4min game killer drive is considered the hardest thing to do for an offense. It means running the ball vs loaded boxes and STILL converting over and over. Our last drive was about 7mins of running. We even got 14carries for 40 something yards for true freshman RB Morris which was VERY important since we want him to stay. Morris is the quickest and shiftiest RB on our team, which is why he returns kickoffs. Our offense is set up to be loaded next year. We get a couple Safeties and a couple DTackles on defense and we will be in the playoff hunt again. So exciting. My how fast things change in the SEC. A month ago folks said OKs coach was on the hotseat and wondering if he would finish this season...the he beat us, bama, and misery and now Venables big new contract is under discussion. In 3 weeks.

Yall realize when we beat Vandy next week that the ONLY reason we arent in the playoffs hoping to make a Title run is because Gilbert couldnt hit a 42yd FG AT HOME to beat UGA as time expired?

Also, if we beat Vandy and win our bowlgame...4 year players like Tyre West will have 40wins in their 4year careers at Tennessee? Averaging 10wins a year for 4 years. Straight. Yet we have morans in the FF demanding coaches be fired when we lose a game...to ranked SEC teams mind you. The vocal minority of shtupid in this fanbase is an embarrassment.

Gilbert hasn't been automatic by a long shot, but he's still pretty good. His missed kick is still a lot like "the winning TD". The "winning TD" isn't a thing if not for the other scores and possibly defensive stops in a game. I hate that he missed that FG, but it was far from being the only play that decided the game. If the offense had gotten a TD or the defense a stop in OT, ... If the rest of the offense hadn't botched the drive or lost yards, the kick would have been more manageable - just lots of blame to go around.

I agree with you. There were a half dozen plays in the 2nd half alone that if every aspect had not gone UGAs way...like their QB dropping a perfect pass in a bucket vs tight man coverage in the corner of the endzone while running for his life...for a 38yd TD on 4th and 6. Thats the play of Stocktons entire LIFE so far and UGA doesnt force OT without it.

That said...all the attempts to mitigate and excuses on planet Earth cannot and will not change the simple fact that our scholarship and NIL paid kicker whose only job on a football team full of incredible athletes and modern day Gladiators on both lines, was to kick that bean between those 2 sticks from a very makeable 42yd distance at HOME in the same Neyland stadium he practices in all the time. He has 1 job. He doesnt even handle kickoffs. Just field goals and PATs. When the game is on the line and hid whole team is counting on him to do his job...he crapped his pants in front of millions of people from 42yds. Our previous kicker had a similar but more difficult opportunity....from 51yds or 49yds? Vs the last Saban coached Bama team in the same stadium and was clutch enough to deliver in crunch time for his teammates and fans. Gilbert just isnt clutch like him. His miss vs OK was crucial as well. He is definitely an above average kicker. His stats demand that honesty. He is also the opposite of clutch...as Louder says "clutchless"...and in tight games or with the game on the line he now has a history of choking. With all the parody in the SEC and most games being decided by 1 score, we badly need a clutch kicker. OKs kicker won them the game with 3 monster 50yd plus kicks with the game on the line. We need a guy like that. Or at least likr Daniel Lincoln

In case yall missed this hidden in the Squirrel thread where Squirrel muffed 2 punts in the 4th qtr for FSU down 3pts in a loss to lowly NCSU...look at what all the WRs we let walk did this year. Seldon was a backup RB but plays WR at VT.

Us being brave enough to be the 1st team to ever clean out our WR room and only keep the freshmen (Staley, Matthews) and Brazzle....look at our WRs vs these guys. This UT team is the 1st ever with 3WRs having at least 700yds ..

Week 13:
#3 Texas A&M 48 SAMFORD 0 (1-11) Samford had a big win over VMI earlier this year, certainly making them a worthy week 13 opponent for A&M.
#4 Georgia 35 vs. Charlotte 3 (1-10) Charlotte certainly had a big win over Monmouth earlier this year.
#10 Alabama 50 vs. Eastern Illinois 0 (3-9) Eastern Illinois has scored more than 20 points three this year, vs Illinois St, Western Illinois and Tenn St. making them certainly a legit opponent in week 13.
Auburn 62 vs Mercer 17 (9-2) Mercer is having a very good year, so congrats to Auburn for the big win
South Carolina 51 vs Coastal Carolina 7 (6-5) Eastern Carolina and Old Dominion had similar wins vs Coastal
LSU 13 vs Western Kentucky 10 (8-3) Western Kentucky had worse losses vs toledo and FIU

Point is playing these late season practice games is the equivelant of having an extra bye week. Probably a very smart scheduling move, time to recover, get injured players back etc. However, it should also impact rankings for these teams.

There's some truth there but Knoxville can be pretty brutal in September too. UCLA 1991 comes to mind.
I think a lot of it came down to our respective coaches. Better coaches will have their teams in good form before lesser coaches.

Squirrel muffed one punt, which is bad enough.

I’ve always been an overall schedule guy. I don’t care about the timing of those “practice” games. Though you do make a good point that it’s probably smart for giving yourself a healthier chance late in the season. But too the rankings it should be irrelevant. Strength of schedule should be the metric of concern.

Good to see you Duck.
Are you still finding time to get outdoors?

I always thought there needs to be some sliding scale. An actual, consistent, metric the committee can refer to to settle this.

SOS in the Top 20, you can get in with 2 losses. SOS from 21-50 in with only one loss. SOS below 50 you have to be perfect. Something like that.

I’d be ok with that.
Or some version of it

Ideally I’d like the conference championship game to be part of the first round but have not completely worked out how that would work

Call me crazy but I'd like to do away with the conference championship games. I'd also like to see the automatic bids done away with seeding done strictly by the final rankings. That should put a minimum of 3 SEC teams in the playoffs every year with most years being 4. So change the SECCG to a play-in game for the 2 teams on the bubble to make the playoffs.
