Rick Barnes: Estrella seems fine, but we’ll see

I don't like the fact that we haven't heard anything.
I think if it was season ending, we would have heard something by now.

My suggestion is just to forget about the idea of trying to rush him back.

When the time is right, we'll ease him back in there.

That would be a win in my opinion.

JMO, but to me JP is one of the 3 irreplaceable players on the team along with Ament and JG. None of the other bigs are proficient at creating and making their own post shot.
Certainly, any one of those 3 significantly impacts the ceiling for this team. I think we could have stood a chance against Houston with Estrella. Without, I’m not so sure.

Yep, I agree. We have bodies, now, which we didn't last year, but we don't have an exact replica of what JP can do offensively. If he's out, we have guys that can come in and contribute in other ways, but no one who is going to come in and consistently give you 15 and 7 every night.

Carey certainly could be, as he punished us last season when he was playing for Vandy. He finally got into a little bit of a groove against rice.

JP is likely the difference in winning/losing a half dozen games this season imo...his scoring in the post ofc, passing, defense and leadership/energy.

He is the best skilled post player on the roster and it isn't even close. Hopefully the bone bruise isn't too severe. Recovery time varies from what I have read.

Rumor I was told was back for SEC play.. They are not rushing it.
Bone took a shot and bleeding from it. Takes a minute to heal up so don’t mess around while it’s healing.
He will be out of basketball shape when he gets back. I’d lower expectations until January for him to be a go. Anything else is gravy. Just took a severe hit to our post game offensively so the rest have to step up.

I guess it depends on the severity of the bruise on how many weeks/months he’ll be out, but if we can get him back back late December for the start of SEC play that would be ideal. It certainly makes the tough non-conference stretch that much harder. He was proving to be a true 3rd consistent/reliable scoring option. Someone else is going to need to step up.

My guess is he will be out until SEC play. Just glad he did not tear any ligaments.

While it stinks to be without him for Houston, Illinois, Louisville, etc, I'm just glad he should be back for most, if not all, the SEC season. While we have depth in the post, JP is the only one that can truly stretch the defense. I hope the guy who dove into his knee gets food poisoning and has a long arduous bout with bed bugs.

It’s the closest thing to a break without being broke. I had a kid in football that got one on a quad and it took him six weeks to get over it. I am glad it’s not structural damage to his knee though.

A "bone bruise" can be very minor (think: hitting your kneecap on a door frame) or deeper and take several weeks to heal. Not usually a big deal.

From Cleveland Clinic:

How long does a bone bruise last?

Bone bruises can take a while to heal. Most bone bruises last a few weeks. More severe bruises can take months (or longer) to heal completely.

How long a bone bruise lasts depends on which type it is, which bone it’s in and if you experienced any other injuries at the same time.

Mike Wilson saying not definite but could be 2-3 weeks. Honestly, best case as it puts him back just before or after Louisville and with enough tune up time for SEC. If his time off spurs Carey and Brown to step up against some super tough competition, it would be a big silver lining and make us that much stronger going forward. Phew!

Gardner Webb game is 5 weeks from injury, I would say that’s a good target and would give him 2 cupcake games to get back and play in prior to SEC start up. I’ll be mildly surprised if they play him against any of the tough remaining OOC opponents.
