it's clear what Heupel's QB strategy was this whole time

this is an echo chamber of sorts
too many people think recruiting is black and white. like if you offer a guy it means you're all-in on them. recruiting is very fluid and you have to cover all your bases even on guys that you know have a 1% chance of ever coming to your school.

every school has their A B and C tier recruiting lists. and the tier isn't based on the players rank. it's based on their likelyhood of success to recruit.

Heup does things differently.

well the thing he did differently left us massively exposed next year. a year we desperately need to win because 2027 will be suicidal.
Wont everyone need to win, and everyone will have crazy schedules? I actually think aa those schedules go we go off pretty easy.

We found Joey after our starter left us.

Need to find a safety, a CB, couple dlinemen, a Lb, and a RB. And whoole
lotta OL who can run block.

GMac will be a great QB, book it. Merk prolly gone somewhere he can start. Coach might bring in an experienced QB next year to compete with GMac. If GMac is 195 now, he could easily be 215 by next season. Ty Simpson and Gunner Stockton became starters this year, and GMac can do the same next year.

after looking at this situation it's clear to me that this was Heupel's recruiting strategy:

1. pour all the money into Nico as the QB and face of the team for several years
2. down-recruit a couple serviceable backups (Merk and GMac) guys that aren't good enough to beat out Nico but would hesitate to hit the portal because they aren't 5* primadonnas.
3. go get Faizon Brandon and make him a redshirt who would start in year 2 when Nico went to the NFL as a junior/senior

this clearly got blown up thanks to Nico's fat f#cking daddy. and now we are exposed to having to start a QB next year that was never meant to actually be a starter at UT.

I think Heupel's only option is to hit the portal and find another senior QB that can step up like Aguilar did to get us through until Faizon is ready.

NO College coach has any clue if a HS kid will be good or live up to their rating. NONE.

NIL has killed all that

No more, kid was recruited watch him/her get better over time

Now? Need a WR? Hit the portal, pay up

QB? You didn't find them out of high school proving your ability to recruit

Now? Wait 'til they perform somewhere else, pay more money than anyone else

See the common denominator?
This right here. Throw the entire budget at the next season. No more investing long term. It's a mercenary league until something changes.

G-Mac was a 5 star until he got injured and couldn’t go to a camp

GMac was a five star qb until he committed to Tennessee and then in true fashion rivals dropped him to a four star. In any case, if he’s not ready to be a starter next year that’s on the coaching staff. No need to get a portal qb unless you don’t plan on playing Faizon his freshman year should George get hurt.

I’m going to be completely honest, if we dumped everything we had into next season or any season, and it resulted in a natty I’d be happy with 8-9 win seasons for ten years after that. I’m in the go for broke crowd, especially when the roster changes each time the portal opens.

GMac and Merk were both highly rated recruits

My 2 cents..
I , like others here in Vol-land think NIL has made millionaires out of teenagers. I think instead of dangling money in front of very impressionable teens, we search thru recruiting people , for guys who WANT to play for our team to determine the best candidates for each position. Think about the Bear Bryant years, where did most all the SEC talent WANT to go? Now seems money is the driving force, as you can take your talent anywhere as long as money is right! As usual, the schools with the best records acquire the best talent. I want the guys who WANT to play for my school, not just drop in because the money is there. Good coaching, good records will attract those. I'll hang up now...

Older Qb's seem to process this deal better. If there is someone in the portal that fits the system i think you have to try and get them for next year. Make it a open competition like this year and see where that leaves you heading out of fall camp. You'll have a guy in year 2, a true freshman and no one really behind either one of them. You need another QB regardless if he starts or waits his turn..

I agree Reed did a great job in he comeback, however SC dropped a pick 6 in the first half which would have put the game out of reach. There were also 2 other interceptions dropped by DBs in the first half. I did notice the A&Ms receivers dropped several balls in the first half as well, however the dropped balls by SCs DBs would have most likely put the game out of reach.
At 30-3 at halftime the game should have been out of reach.

Beamer getting a phone call on his burner at half:

"I want 5 cows in the barn, got it?"- Greg Sankey, probably
