it's clear what Heupel's QB strategy was this whole time

after looking at this situation it's clear to me that this was Heupel's recruiting strategy:

1. pour all the money into Nico as the QB and face of the team for several years
2. down-recruit a couple serviceable backups (Merk and GMac) guys that aren't good enough to beat out Nico but would hesitate to hit the portal because they aren't 5* primadonnas.
3. go get Faizon Brandon and make him a redshirt who would start in year 2 when Nico went to the NFL as a junior/senior

this clearly got blown up thanks to Nico's fat f#cking daddy. and now we are exposed to having to start a QB next year that was never meant to actually be a starter at UT.

I think Heupel's only option is to hit the portal and find another senior QB that can step up like Aguilar did to get us through until Faizon is ready.

That is one of the dumbest takes I have seen to date. Nico has a greedy dad, NIL killed that one. Merklinger was highly recruited. He does not seem to be able to process at warp speed as required. Nearly infinity to 1 he stays next year. Gmac is going to be really good, his 6' 6" frame will be ideal once it fills out. Faizon will get a year to acclimate. If he brings if he brings in a portal QB, it will to provide full competition only.

Yes, but that still leaves us with just two scholarship QBs next year, so kinda need someone else here just to be safe. We‘d be an injury away from having just one QB. So, not just for competition only. (Assuming Merk leaves)

you can say whatever you want but Merk and GMac weren't even on the same tier of "highly recruited" as Faizon and Nico. they were decidedly less talented and way lower ranked recruits.

They expected Nico to be a 5*. He wasn't. Everyone except Nico's entourage knew it. It was going to come to a choice for Heupel. Nico made his own and took a pay cut.

Your comment makes some sense for Merklinger. I like him. Seems to be a good kid. He doesn't look like an SEC starter.

If Nico had been as good as expected then you have GM come in, RS, sit a year, then starter after Nico turned pro. Then you do the same with Brandon. You'd have a string of guys either going pro early or hitting the portal to find a starting job.

The thing that blew the plan up... is Nico isn't very good.

Lots of people do not want hear that Merk & Gmac are not going to be serviceable every down SEC QBs. It does not change just because they don’t like it. Anybody see a youngster out of Nashville named Marcel Reed yesterday QB the Aggies in a stunning come from behind victory to keep A&M in the national title hunt? A&M also had a good freshman RB out of Memphis. Either we’re missing out on in state kids who could make a difference or not developing what we have very well.

They’ll need some experienced QB from the portal to come in and compete to start. The others have little to no game experience. This team could be better next year with a decent QB.

I am not sure about Merk, however I would not give up on him. The 2 best QBs so far for JH have been guys who are junior or seniors. Now I know Merk has not played as much as Hooker or JA, if he does not complete strongly for the position next year, then he should hit the portal. As far as GMac, I have seen enough of him to know the guy has an arm and appears to know where to put the ball, his grandfather was Vandys HC so he comes from a football family.

As far as Nico, I believe he was recruited by the collective as much as by JH.

I agree Reed did a great job in he comeback, however SC dropped a pick 6 in the first half which would have put the game out of reach. There were also 2 other interceptions dropped by DBs in the first half. I did notice the A&Ms receivers dropped several balls in the first half as well, however the dropped balls by SCs DBs would have most likely put the game out of reach.

Or…for those of us living in reality….

Once you get Nico, it makes it harder to attract a big name in the next class. It also limits the money you have available.

But continue your weird conspiracy, I guess

none of what you said changes anything about my point. merk and Mac are decidedly lower ranked recruits compared to Nico and faizon. Heupel knew that would have to be the case.

Reed is in his 3rd year at A&M.

Right. But you made it sound intentional. You created a conspiracy where we were intentionally avoiding having any viable option outside of Nico

Not a terrible strategy OP, if that's what he's done. But, it's hard to see a top shelf SEC champ QB staying most places for 3 or definitely 4 years w draft & XP.

NIL has killed all that

No more, kid was recruited watch him/her get better over time

Now? Need a WR? Hit the portal, pay up

QB? You didn't find them out of high school proving your ability to recruit

Now? Wait 'til they perform somewhere else, pay more money than anyone else

See the common denominator?
