Thoughts on leaving Joey in so long?

I think we saw tonight Heupel will look in the portal for a QB
I would like for us to be portal shopping, though I sort of doubt we'll be looking for anyone more than what JA was before coming here.

But I didn't think tonight showed us anything about GMac. His last pass down the sideline was poor, but it looked like it came out of his hand weird. Merk looked awful but I think we all knew he wasn't it. I wish we would stop using Merk completely, but I get that Josh is a loyal guy and loyalty and trust are pretty big focal points for this program. And in that case, you've got to show it in return.

I know he was trying to continue Joey’s record.

I would have thought he would have started GMac way earlier in this game.

He never allows his QBs get quality reps. No wonder we look to the portal with QBs that actually have playing time.
He was trying not to spook Faizon? Hoping to hide GMac from teams looking to poach him in the portal? Nah, Heupel has to keep the "youth" card in his pocket for next season.

I’m saying he could have been more ready if they gave him more playing time in garbage games. Coach hardly ever plays them.

Actually, CJH has played the other quarterbacks in garbage games. The problem is that we haven't had many garbage game, 3 to be exact.

But even in those games which we should win easily - first goal is always to make sure we win those games and don't lose them because we are so overconfident that we can beat their starters with our 3rd string. There may also be the need to give the starters some reps in the game as well to work out plays in a real game.

And he keeps doing it this late in the season. Already cost us the playoffs. He's gonna try and catch DJ Lagway for that record

Good grief - if that field goal in regulation against Georgia was good - we are still in the conversation.

OU is just great defensively - ask Bama. The only play I wish he could take back is the interception against Bama at the end of the half.

I’m fine with starters staying. The issue is the games are already way out of had by the time he plays the second string QB.

I thought Joey was in at least 2 series too long. The younger guys need more game time reps, and is silly to risk a starting QB injury that late in a blowout win.

If the system is that complicated where four people can’t do well in it…
Joey figured it out in a couple months. IMO GMac looks more poised than Merk but its a small sample. GMac is the skinniest P4 QB that I've saw play this year are maybe ever, very frail looking. I'd wear long sleeves or something his arms are toothpicks.

Heupel's MO ever since he has been at Tennessee is to play starters through the third period unless Tennessee has gotten into the 50s on offense. Then he might go with reserves in middle of the third quarter. If still in the 30s going into the 4th, starters continue to play. That is his way of doing business.

It has gotten asked every year about getting QBs expereince and that is how he goes about it.. been pretty consistent with that process and I wouldn't expect it to change.. Think back to Nico's freshman year for examples.

After a bye week, and heading into the Swamp next week, our (or anyone's) starting QB needs as many game reps as is helpful to his game.

The best move for next season is winning our way into a bowl game, so we can have those extra weeks of practice with the players who will likely be starters in August 2026.

I'd much rather start working on the 2026 season in December of this year, instead of Spring of next year.

We all agree on that. Maybe time to change the MO? The running up the score thing is getting old. Play the 2nd string with at least a few series with starters.

This is accurate! I, like others, disagree, with his philosophy on it, but he’s the HC. I personally like coaches that play all their players early and often, competition is good , keeps everyone engaged, motivated, hungry.

Heupel has shown he doesn’t trust players at many positions and often it seems detrimental to the program….because he refuses to play talented freshman unless foced to.
