Herbstreit hot take on Tennessee - Lock down Heupel

Players commit to the coach, not the school. People hung up over a coach getting a job change unexpectedly and wants to bring the guys he has spent a season recruiting is not some big deal. My goodness. If shoe was on other foot and Tennessee was hiring someone who did that, no one would say a word.
Cignetti won last year with all his JMU guys. For every coach that gets fired we get a what recruit can we poach thread. It's fine when we poach them but don't nobody go after our cruits.

“Locking down”, in todays dollars, means a contract with a rolling 3-yr extension for the HC. Sooner or later, every head coach will either be replaced or retire. It is fiscally irresponsible to hand out these 10 year deals. They almost never work out.

If UT is going to lock down anything, they need to lock down a kicker with ice water in his veins, and lock out Banks and Martinez.

It is what it is. If you want to rise to the top, you have to be willing to make the hard decisions.

Best take Herb as ever made.

And he is 100% right. He is the first of multiple big time people who have called out our fans this week for the big overreaction. I hope people sit back and look at the totality of the situation. Because rn this program is heading in the right direction.
While I do believe Josh needs to make some changes, our fans are chronically embarrassing.

I don’t want Heupel fired. I do think we need to look at assistant upgrades. Making fundamental blunders over and over isn’t good. Players look confused on D a lot looking around at too the sideline at times even when the ball is being snapped. But the reasons getting or going after a quality coach after Kiffin was because nobody wanted to coach under our horrible administration and weak AD’s at that time. Of course no sure fire things with a great administration but the coaching pool if interest will be much greater next time. But firing Heupel with his records since arriving at this time would not be wise. I was upset as anyone the other night, and Heupel like any coach has areas to improve at. But he has earned the right to continue on at this point. I think Martinez needs to for sure go, it’s time for someone new back coaching back there. GBO

That was his villian arc. His hero arc would have been hiring Kiffin who was the only coach worth a damn who was publicly lobbying for the job. Remember, Lane was doing tv hits talking about the job while Fulmer was down to Doeren, Mel Tucker, and Jeremy Pruitt loI

I'm sure there are fans though that said they would rather go thru the Pruitt years and penalties than to ever have him come back
I’d have been very happy if we’d hired him at the time-But Leach and Jeff Brohm were also interested in the job (at least, Leach was. May be misremembering about Brohm), and they’d have been pretty great here too, imo. I really don’t think that search was “Lane or bust” like you seem to think.

It’s all in the past, so I won’t argue and will agree that Lane should’ve been the hire. I just think you’re being a bit unfair to some of the other coaches.

The problem with heup is he’s stopped doing the things that once made us successful. It’s like once he had a little success by playing like there’s nothing to lose he has gotten scared and playing too conservative. Something needs to change whether it’s game planning or assistants.

Herbs was noting socmed posts. Fans hooked on socmed post their every reaction without filter. Count the number of posters in the FF calling out CJH, then multiply it by the number of socmed apps. Percentage wise, it ain’t significant. You want a true representation of Vols fans, get it in person.

Absolutely incorrect. There are only so many top tier jobs in the NCAA and TN is one of them. If Heupel goes there will be plenty of good coaches interested. Some of you need to quit holding this program in such low regard.
Like who? You do remember the search before JH was hired? This is the sole reason he's blatantly saying "humble yourselves and lock Heupel up"

I'm sure he will be re-evaluated closer to his contract deadline, January 2030. I'm not sure I can get on board with keeping him because we're in a better position. Doesn't there need to be continued growth? However, the "fire" Heupel crowd have lost their minds.

**Edit** I also want to see what he can do with "his" recruits, not someone else's. That could very well change things one way or the other.

Great post!

Nice thoughts with your edit.

A recruiting class that he had his assistants contacting during his meeting to inform the team he was leaving to try to talk them into not starting classes so that they could follow them to USC. Also the 2009 class quickly fell completely apart with guys being kicked off the team for legal issues, a few busts, no QB even being signed, etc.

Kiffin signed Tyler Bray.

Gee, when a tight end makes a fool of himself by not tackling a guy loping down the field with a pulled hamstring, a tackle that doesn't even try to block his man that turned the game around, trotting a kicker back out there hoping one day he will make a field goal and an offensive line that looked like the scout team letting guys roam free to the quarterback.......don't question the lack of coaching because many are satisfied to be in the middle of the pack of the SEC. You have to question the player and the coach. I've seen better fundamentals with junior high boys.

I doubt that would have been mentioned if he got interviewed for the job.

“Mike, any chance you die in the next few years?”

If Banks takes another job, Inge will be promoted to DC. That's why he's here.

Be careful what you fish for.

I would expect a DC search to go about like how the baseball search went.... "we are going to do a national search" -------- 72 hours later promoted from within.
