Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

There are 129 FBS Schools. If the playoff expands to 18 that's roughly 14% of the teams will make the playoffs.
There are 365 teams in DIV 1 Basketball of which 68 teams get in including the play in games. That equates to about 19%.

Math seems pretty solid to me.
It wasn't clear you were basing your comment on an 18 team playoff. It does still depend however on the rules to get in to the Playoffs? How many teams get automatic bids, etc.

I talked about the expanded playoff earlier. I should have been more clear. The SEC will most likely get 4 teams in this year. With and expanded playoff they will get 5 or 6 most likely. If the SEC gets 5, that's roughly 1/3 of the conference. Should we expect the VOLs to be in the top 1/3 of the conference?

It's not apples to apples. I think the percentage of really bad basketball teams is higher than that of football. Top 16 vs Top 68 is not even close to the same
If the playoff go to 16 teams and the SEC gets 5 in that's roughly 1/3 of the teams. Should we expect the VOLs to be consistently in the top 1/3 of the league?

If True then yes, most years we should be in the playoffs. Unless the conference adds another 16 teams. :p So many moving parts.

That was my original point. We should be in the playoffs with a 16 or 18 team format most of the years. If not then we are not in the top 1/3 of the conference. I realize there are outliers but we should be in most years, IMO.

My only concern is we keep talking about the talent gap. He is in year 5. I’m honestly not too concerned with the offensive talent. We failed Saturday night and at Bama because of poor execution, not because we didn’t belong due to talent offensively(like in many many years prior to Heupel). However, I do feel like there is a gap in talent at certain positions on defense in year 5, both starters and especially quality depth. That is very concerning to me. Also feel like there is a gap with our scheme. Enough said.

Here is a trivia question: do you know who are the 3 teams in the entire country whose defense has given up no more than 24 points every game?? Ohio State and Indiana are 2 and both are undefeated. Guess the 3rd one. The team is 4-5!
There has been very few moments in the history of CFB that Tennessee and the SEC in general has not suffered from a talent gap. Tennessee in the Ninetys and the SEC in general over the past decade and a half have had equal or better talent than the rest of CFB. Before the ninetys Alabubba had a couple spurtsTennsee had a couple as well. But over al the entirety of the SEC was a red-headed step child for decades.
The ninetys spoiled Tennessee fans and the last two decades have spoiled the SEC in general. I believe that in general the SEC will continue to dominate due to changing demographics in the country and Tennessee will get to dip their finger in the pie from time to time. But just like the NFL the days of one team dominating for a decade are over. It is unrealistic to think that every year we will win it all.
I hope Doc starts off every year with 15-0 and I will forever say WGWTFA but but those are expectations and not predictions and that's the fun of it. I only had two rules when I was in charge, 1. Be on time, 2. Do everything right.
Losers have goals and are devastated when they don't make them, WInners have high expectations and can live with giving it a run and falling a little short. In my opinion what Heup has done is nothing short of amazing.

In A 16 team playoff format they way I have read it is:

4 SEC
4 Big Ten
2 ACC
2 big 12
1 G5

3 random picks ... Everyone knows it will be SEC or Big Ten teams.. Notre Dame occassionally..

I’m beginning to think Kiffin stays at ole miss
If he does through this insane coaching hiring deal we’re about to see I’m thinking he may actually only leave for Tennessee if CJH ever left

No I DONT WANT CJH fired

I’m really beginning to think Kiffin may truly regret leaving here
He's regreted it since they kick his azz off the plane.

ND always. After they get a home game and make it in this year by beating NO ONE, they will never schedule more than 2 hard games a year.

Oregon will have Beaten NO ONE good this year but they will get in

It just goes to show you that timing really matters. Who knew that when Kiffin was at UT he would one day be the hottest name in coaching.

If you believe that 12 SEC teams should make playoffs, then I don't know what to tell you... because it's not happening..

The problem with that is that in basketball they actually factor in strength of schedule as a huge part of the equation. In football they tend to ignore it to the point of punishing teams for playing strong schedules. You also can't just conveniently ignore the fact that the SEC will normally get more than half of their teams into the basketball tournament. Will probably average in the 60-70% range which is more than double the current 25% for football. But for the sake of ending this at this point I will say you are absolutely right and spot on with your take. I'm a moron for even bringing it up.

I hadn’t even thought about that. If 1/3 of the league gets in the playoff, no reason we are not in the playoff 2/3 years with our resources.
