Herbstreit hot take on Tennessee - Lock down Heupel

And I'll say this again "be humble" fire JH and you'll never get a coach thats worth a damn near Knoxville a long while again unless they coming to kick the Vols ass..

Imagine Heupel/Kiffin going to LSU/Florida where talent is readily available!! Y'all better humble yourselves and be content with what we have🤦🏾‍♂️

Absolutely incorrect. There are only so many top tier jobs in the NCAA and TN is one of them. If Heupel goes there will be plenty of good coaches interested. Some of you need to quit holding this program in such low regard.

Isn't he locked down already through the next few years? I'm all for keeping Heupel but he's already making just over 9 million I think and unless we were going to the playoff or conference title game this season (we are not) then it's not time for another raise IMO.

Best take Herb as ever made.

And he is 100% right. He is the first of multiple big time people who have called out our fans this week for the big overreaction. I hope people sit back and look at the totality of the situation. Because rn this program is heading in the right direction.
Yes, we are Penn State and Josh is James Franklin. Can't win the games to go to the next level. Just wait until Florida or Vandy beats us. You haven't seen any outrage yet.

I don't think that is a good comparison. Penn State is the one job that is open that super duper stable.

They are hoping to move from their Mark Richt Era and get a coach that can elevate the program to the next level.

I'm not sure Tennessee is that same spot. Heupel's time here can't be defined as stale like Franklin's was.

He's right. It seems most of our more emotional fans have short memories. Two decades of suck guys. One bad year and four successfull in a row. I would give man up to 10 to win a title if he can win 9-10 every year in that time.

Not sure if it's been posted, but...

CJH should not be fired at all; however we would be remiss if Martinez, and Inge were not considered for being replaced. Also looking into hiring a game manager to help CJH with management of clock and timeouts. Potentially put that person up in the box. That would take a few things off his workload. Just my opinion.

People aren't ready for the "Inge is a candidate to be DC if Banks is hired away from Tennessee" conversation.

There are I think 136 FBS teams, hence 136 head coaches. Of these, 135 each year fail to win “the big game”.
By simple math, 68 of these coaches will have losing records each year; and only a handful will win even 10 games.
But sure, keep complaining that we are not in that upper echelon because we are not that one team. Based on past experience, I am SURE if we replace the most successful coach since Fulmer that we are guaranteed to only get better. There are dozens of the next Nick Sabans just sitting next to the phone waiting to take our call.

Heupel would also have to continue winning 9-10 consistently for another 5 years while avoiding a championship to be considered in the same category as Richt and Franklin, IMO.

We just put up over 400 yds on what is statistically the best SEC defense. That's after a 500 yard game at KY. Hype is a good coach. We've got a good recruiting class coming in, and things look good for next year. Whether he thinks he needs to make coaching adjustments is up to him, but I think Banks deserves another year.

He's calling out a very small group of people.... Literally the overwhelming majority of fans don't want Heupel fired.
This is true! Also true, literally everyone associated with or fans of Vol football should want better play than what this years version has shown.
