Yep, there are no sure things in modern college football with NIL. It's NFL lite and the last I checked the margins are razor thin. A few good breaks or bad breaks are often the difference in competing for a championship or firing your coach.Yeah, they should probably go after a proven National Championship coach like Jimbo Fisher.
I just don't think it's very realistic to have good proven depth with the current NIL structure. You only have so much money and you have to decide what you want to spend it on. It's the reason that there is so much parity as teams like Alabama and Georgia can't stack 5 stars three deep anymore. It's much more nuanced and complicated than it used to be and like many saying it's NFL lite.My only concern is that good depth is vital for this league and to possibly contend. We can’t keep leaning on freshmen.
I dont root for other SEC teams to wins, but I recognize there is not much separation in any team in the confrence outside of maybe A&M at the top and Kentucky South Carolina at the bottom. And even they have played some teams close.Yea I know, SEC best conference in America. Yada.yada,yada.. I'm not one of the conference pride individuals...
Buddy we have two of the best corners in the country injured on the bench. Is that CWM fault? His biggest whiff so far is his d-coordinator and corners coach hire. Willie failed miserably here with Butch, except for Cam Sutton. Most of us rolled our eyes when he hired Willie. I know some here will blame Banks for the safeties, but I’m blaming Willie for the DB recruiting. Your DC isn’t leading many charges in recruiting. Your corner’s coach is however for most your DB recruits. The safety position is horrendous and the corner room isn’t anything to brag about when a walk on is your CB3. Goree and Merrit should be safeties or star. Boo should be a FS, and a damn good one. See ball get ball, that should be his role and he’s a turnover creating machine. I don’t understand our philosophy here.
I don’t think we seen what can happen this off season with this fanbase if we go 8-4 and if we go 7-5 miss we’ll not be on here or listen to any Knoxville sports radio bc it will be ridiculousThere a reason we call the Legion of the Miserable! Some people just choose to be miserable.
I knowNo.
Game day atmospheres at neyland are second to none.
It’s the resale ticket prices that burn you. That isn’t the AD’s fault.
If you want dirt cheap tickets, it’ll come back when we have a terrible football team.
Be careful what you wish for.
South Carolina about had Bama. Kentucky is awful but beat Auburn, lost to Texas in OT and Ole Miss by 7. Auburn lost 1 score games to Mizzou, A&M, and Oklahoma and lost by 10 to Georgia. Arkansas is also bad but lost 1 score games to Ole Miss, A&M, Tennessee, Auburn, and Miss State.I dont root for other SEC teams to wins, but I recognize there is not much separation in any team in the confrence outside of maybe A&M at the top and Kentucky South Carolina at the bottom. And even they have played some teams close.
Fact is the landscape has changed. The average fan doesn't understand that with NIL and the Portal a coach can build a team at a lot of places other than the traditional powers or destination schools. The brand doesn't mean as much as it used to. A good coach can win at a lot of places now.I have to admit I've been surprised at a number of the jobs being former "destination jobs" not generating the interest they or even I expected.
I think Kiffin is unique in that he already held a good job, left for greener pastures and it didn't work. I think if he's got the resources he needs and is well paid he'll likely not be leaving, I didn't think that yet weeks ago.
It's going to be interesting what happens moving forward.
at seems like a loser mentalityExactly. This fanbase is so melodramatic. Going to have to learn to enjoy the 8-4/9-3 seasons or else it’s going to be miserable for everyone.
I know
Winning cost money
But that’s why I ask if that has cost us the neuland effect
Watching games on TV the fans don’t have the juice they had the last few years it seems
Hell, I’m priced out and pissed about it but winning is more important
That’s why I’m all for making the fcs opponent the spring game and charge like 50 a ticket to go to it
See, this is what bothers me a little. I never said I was for a coaching change. In fact in one post I said it would be a bad thing. My whole point has been that my confidence that Josh will win anything significant here is waning. That doesn't mean I want him fired. If he leaves in the next 3 years it will be by his own choice. My expectations are really no different than yours. Like you mentioned mine are little more. That brings us to the question, are my expectations too high? Well, you tell me. I think with an expanded playoff we should be solidly in it most years. That means we are a top 15 team regularly. If we are not a top 15 team most years then we are not living up to what a program with the money, history, fanbase should be. I expect that with some regularity that the Vols are a solid playoff team hosting. Regularity? Every 3-4 years. I don't think just getting to the playoffs should be the ultimate barometer of success either. I expect to win some playoff games. I expect us to beat our rivals some. We've beaten Alabama and it seems to be a home and home type thing, at least for the moment although I think that could be trending differently. Similar with Florida but we haven't beaten the gators in Gainesville since many posters have been alive. Can we finally beat them this year? A team that recently fired their coach and lost one of their best players? I would hope so. And GA. I recognize GA has been a juggernaut but I expect to beat them on occasion. I expect to win against raked teams regardless of circumstances at least at a 50% clip. We've lost 5 straight against ranked teams. I guess our last chance this year will be Vandy giving that they will still be ranked in a few weeks. And lastly, I expect Josh to fire bad coaches and hire good ones. I said a few years ago Banks would get him fired if he kept him. That is still on the table.I understand and also know that you like to poke the bear and ask the same questions repeatedly to drive home your point. I think you are a good dude and love the Vols and that is why I continue to engage. I also know you are smart enough to know those of us arguing for stability aren't saying we are okay with winning 7-8 games a year. I do think my expectations are a little lower than yours and that's okay. My personal opinion is that even discussing a different coach at this point in our program is a dangerous and foolish game that can seriously backfire. On the bright side with our loss to Heupel you and others don't need to worry anymore about being left out of the playoffs at 10-2. Anyway, it's time to flush Saturday night and move on. I will cheer on the Vols until all the games are played and then hope Barnes gets his elusive final 4 and that Elander gets another college World Series. We also have a real shot at the Lady Vols getting to a final four. Life is good and I'm blessed.
I didn’t say 8-4 is the goal. I said you still have to be able to enjoy those seasons because it’s not a bad season. As I said the other day- Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Texas, A&M, Oklahoma, Auburn… that’s 9 teams just in the SEC that all have fan bases thinking they belong in the playoff every year. The math doesn’t work. We aren’t going to win 10 games every year. It is stupid and counterproductive to be talking about firing Heupel because we lost a few close games to teams that I just named.Th
at seems like a loser mentality
I understand what your saying but 10 win regular season is attainable and should be the goal
9/8 win seasons are gonna be tough to make the future playoffs
Adding 4 more teams gives the other conferences a better chance then the sec to get more teams especially with the damn 9 game conference schedule IMO
