While I agree, you have to pay your starters a lot and you can overpay for depth. Not enough funds. Your top 24-30 guys are going to get the most and the rest has to be used effectively. We are seeing more and more teams become younger and younger than usual. And with Covid players finally ending, I think it will become the norm to have half your team as underclassmen. My only concern is that good depth is vital for this league and to possibly contend. We can’t keep leaning on freshmen.
Yeah, I know. Will that be a big achievement if we sneak in as a 15-seed? I think most fans be content with it, but to me, it will depend on how the season played out.The playoffs are expanding. To get in, you pretty much just need to be a top 16 team or so. Making the playoffs should be achievable most years with the money that's pouring in.
I'm sure you would be shocked to hear...blue font, but the amount of B1G fans I see and especially Ohio St. fans on the interwebs who believe they've never paid players is astronomical. I just chuckle at their stupidity.Faulty premise. All the schools he mentioned were beyond accustomed to paying players pre-NIL.
I can’t believe he mentioned Arkansas as a school that didn’t pay its players illegally. They were in the SWC and were competitive; that didn’t happen without a lot of payola.
This is the 2010's mindset I was talking about yesterday. And I've asked how long should it take. We are in year 5. We looking at 5 years more, 10 years? I'm not getting any younger.
That's part of it. That's also part of why people have short leashes with regard to player and coach underachievement. When you force people to "invest" in going to the games rather than "recreating" and going to the games, then they start "expecting" a return on their investment. Players, coaches and admin want all this money; then it comes with an absolutely abysmal work/life balance. And it's not a UT fan problem, it's a problem everywhere or will be very soon.Has DW priced out the Neyland effect

I've never once said what I expected. I said I didn't have the confidence that he would win at a championship level. And no, we aren't there. Next year will be a rebuild. Lose lots of key pieces and will be breaking in a new QB, most likely a freshman or redshirt freshman. Perhaps in two years we have a shot to make the playoffs. If the expectations are to lose 2,3,4 games a year, then that's fine. This is the 2010's mindset I was talking about yesterday.
We're there. We're there right now. We aren't rebuilding anything. This idea that we are going build until we win at least 11 games every year is, like I said, 2010's thinking. Or maybe find some unicorn coach who can do it? Who's that?? Saban retired because he recognized it was impossible moving forward.
You build a team that has the pieces to compete for a championship and hope the pieces fall in place. That's the best anyone can do now. Refusing to accept that just means you don't understand what the sport is now, which is a you problem not a "UT football" problem.
Texas isn't making the playoff either. They objectively had way more money and way higher expectations on the 25 team than us or anyone else. The only possible exception right now to the dog eat dog world of CFB is Ohio State, and they would most definitely not be an exception if they played in this conference.
That's really been my biggest disappointment this year. We've really beaten no one and we've struggled to beat sone of the ones we have. I guess our best win would be Vandy or Florida if we're fortunate to win one or both of those.Yeah, I know. Will that be a big achievement if we sneak in as a 15-seed? I think most fans be content with it, but to me, it will depend on how the season played out.
On the flip side, if we just missed the playoffs, but we went 9-3 with wins at Athens and Tuscaloosa, will I see that as a failed season? I’m not sure.

When the CFP expands to 14 or 16 teams this Winter , then a 9-3 teams get in the tournament... Do I believe a 9-3 team win the Championship? Probably not but if some fans are looking to beat their chest over a Participation trophy, so be it...I've never once said what I expected. I said I didn't have the confidence that he would win at a championship level. And no, we aren't there. Next year will be a rebuild. Best win is over a 5-4 Mississippi State team that is 1-4 in conference..That's really been my biggest disappointment this year. We've really beaten no one and we've struggled to beat sone of the ones we have. I guess our best win would be Vandy or Florida if we're fortunate to win one or both of those.
I understand and also know that you like to poke the bear and ask the same questions repeatedly to drive home your point. I think you are a good dude and love the Vols and that is why I continue to engage. I also know you are smart enough to know those of us arguing for stability aren't saying we are okay with winning 7-8 games a year. I do think my expectations are a little lower than yours and that's okay. My personal opinion is that even discussing a different coach at this point in our program is a dangerous and foolish game that can seriously backfire. On the bright side with our loss to Heupel you and others don't need to worry anymore about being left out of the playoffs at 10-2. Anyway, it's time to flush Saturday night and move on. I will cheer on the Vols until all the games are played and then hope Barnes gets his elusive final 4 and that Elander gets another college World Series. We also have a real shot at the Lady Vols getting to a final four. Life is good and I'm blessed.I've not argued for anything. In most cases I've simply asked questions. Questions that seem to bother people because they know the true answers but dont want to acknowledge them. I've said repeatedly that I'm not for firing Heupel. That doesn't mean I have confidence that he will ever be more than a 9-3 average year on year coach. That seems to be ok with a lot of posters, and that's fine.
As I've said many times, these are always financial decisions. As long as DW has people throwing money at him, he'll be here as long as he wants.
