He might listen, but OU isn't going to tell Stoops to get lost. He's Sooner Royalty. The guy who brought the program back from 3 win seasons to a NC in 2 years. OU believes that they can get a coach equal to or better than Josh without having to push Bob away.

Venables is still on somewhat of a hot seat. The next 4 games will make a big difference in how he ends up. Tenn, Alabama, LSU, and Missouri. All pretty good teams up to this point, but LSU and Mizzu are both reeling at the moment and they are home games for OU.

I think most people will be happy with, but are not expecting wins on the road against Tenn and AL. How well those two games are played by OU will say a lot on Venables long term.

Even if there are 4 losses to end the season, I don't see OU making a change this year. Too many other good to great openings, and a new AD search is ongoing. A lot in flux right now. He gets at least the start of next year, and probably the whole season.

Oh yeh the university and resources are top notch. It's the angry puppeteers running the show that will cause problems.

I understood his frustration with Woodtard , but he gives me the impression he's ready to go scorched Earth and put a lot of pressure on the next AD and indirectly coaching staff.

Because they are. Texas is having an off year but they have and will continue to pull in top 5 talent. TAMU is right there as well. There is money and then there is “Texas” money. Currently rated 3 and 5 for recruiting next year.

It was my understanding that the majority of the buyout for Fisher was due to the massive extension given by Woodwards replacement. Maybe wrong but I did hear that.

No fan base likes a massive buyout when they fire the ****** coach. Also, no fan base likes a small buyout when their coach gets hired away by a team like USC, hypothetically.

Well he was gone regardless. He would have to quit if what the governor said was true. No AD would work in an environment where the one thing their performance is most judged on is totally out of their control. Now either the governor knew he was going to be fired, pressured the board to fire him after saying what he said or the board realized their was no way forward after what the governor said. Landry should have stayed out of it publicly.

A&M had the #1 class in 2022 and been top 10 every year while paying $100 million for Jimbo Fisher not to coach. And Texas had the #1 recruiting class last year.

So yeah A&M and Texas are at the top.

Not to go off in a different direction, but I’ve seen this type of comment a few times and allow me to go a bit off topic before steering back to my point that it is a completely different situation.

A college baseball coach leaving for the MLB is a whole different animal than the Tennessee HC leaving for another HC job. Good luck to him.

Being here as baseball coach, even as beloved as he is, isn’t the major leagues. Growing up, the majority of boys in this state dreamed of playing football for the University of Tennessee over dreaming of playing for the Titans or Falcons.

I coached little league up until last year. You know how many kids in this state said their favorite player was a current Vol? You know how many boys said when they grew up they wanted to play baseball for the University of Tennessee? Zero. Every single kid I asked said a major league player or playing for a MLB franchise. Baseball is a completely different animal. I love the game but the structure is completely alien to football in the south.

For kids with baseball dreams… nobody dreams of playing college baseball or minor league baseball. It’s a sport completely dominated by its top professional league. When Tony V, entered coaching, nobody thought it was possible for a college coach to be hired to be an MLB manager. Unlike college football where a lot Tyof prestige is placed on the coaches and it rivals NFL when it comes to ambitions, baseball is a completely different animal, Tony V was just handed the opportunity of a lifetime that nobody would turn down. I’m happy for him. He’s deserves it. He’s accomplished everything he can here.

That was for an MLB job, though. No college coach had ever been offered an MLB job before.

I suppose Heup could leave, but if he does, I think it would have to be for a pro job. Contrary to what the self-loathing, pity party, weak chicken little element in our fan base thinks, UT is an elite job. Especially with the current administration. And Heupel loves it here.

I think he could potentially be an interesting NFL candidate because of his offensive acumen/playcalling and he has the exact demeanor you want from an NFL coach.

Also, even if Stoops has nothing do with the place (which will not happen until Bob is in his 80's or dead), I think that bridge is forever burned. He's not from the area. He only spent two years there. He won a national title there as the QB so he accomplished the goal. Heup values loyalty over nostalgia.

1. His family is happy here
2. He has a great relationship with the AD
3. It would take a very weird situation for him to leave
4. I think it would be more likely if he had 2 or 3 bad years 6ish wins in a row he would get sent packing vs him leaving after great years for more money.
