Fact is, GOP has flatly refused to negotiate. If you believe the GOP will negotiate with the Dems once they give up their leverage, then bless your heart.

you and your significant other own a car together. it breaks down, it needs more work done on it than you can already afford. this is your only car, without it you aren't getting food, you aren't getting to work, and it really messes up both of your lives.

you want to get work done that will let the car run again, even though its more than you can afford.
your partner wants to spent about 33% more on a whole bunch of things that won't help you get food, get to work, or generally help you live your lives.

remember that you are holding on getting the car running, and take care of the other things after the car is running. your partner wants to hold up a running car and a normal life to get some padded seats put in.

yall are in a disagreement about what should be done. which one of you is being reasonable? which one is in need of compromising?

You'll catch a little flack on your analogy here but it is a good perspective.

I would refine your analogy this way:
the budget to maintain your car and put gas in it is established. it costs 5200 a year. you want to continue fund it out of your weekly pay to the tune of $100 a week until you get through holidays and then re evaluate the weekly set aside for the vehicle. Your spouse wants to bump it up $10 a week. Since neither wants to compromise, you stop funding the car budget but continue driving the car.

Republicans want nothing from the Dems, hence there's nothing to negotiate. But let's have some fun.

Let's negotiate here. You play the Dems. You say to me "I want $1.5T more in spending". What are you going to offer me to entice me to grant you that spending?

Look at how morbidly obese food stamp single moms are and the quantity and quality of food they load up in their buggies. That quantity of food, the hospital costs, the insulin, and so on are all facets of a lifestyle that can only be afforded by being subsidized by the government or apparently by earning Mark Mangino's salary at KU, which is said to have been $2.3 million per year in 2008 dollars and 2008 purchasing power.

So with Trump's shutdown, maybe he should pay our troops himself given they're required to work.

The Orange Menace is gonna make history soon if he doesn't cave in to the Dems.

Future pay (e.g., Nov 15): At risk if shutdown continues—could be the first missed active-duty paycheck in history without more reprogramming. White House says they've "identified more funds" but calls it a "limited pot," prioritizing troops over other programs.

Yes, a portion of the U.S. military has missed a paycheck during a lapse in government appropriations. In January 2019, the U.S. Coast Guard became the first military branch ever to miss a paycheck during a government shutdown.
