Another Government Shutdown Thread

Oh geez. It would be the PERFECT time for these obese, tattooed, Baptist single moms to go on a 72-hour fast to improve their insulin resistance and shed some fat. But nooooooo... 🤣
Baptist?

That one is definitely some sort of Calvinist.

She is talking like all that stuff is predestined.

SES GS16s aren’t interested. They got fancy watches marked up by the orange mans tarriffs, drivin $130k beamers, and million$ homes at risk.
Orange man bad so the SES say…
True. I don't care about unions. The one good thing Trump has done this term is to try and decertify a bunch of unions. My agencies unions are scared sh!tless and its great. Want efficient government? Sh!tcan the unions. Funny seeing so many MAGA become pro union now :)

And just so you know, because I feel bad about this, GS-16 isn't really a thing. Its my play on a quote from Rush Hour "G14 classified". Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan start in Rush Hour so if you watch it don't let the rest of MAGA know.

1. Schumer isn't fuming. He talks like a tired old man. Did you even watch the clip?
2. Schumer called Trump out for being a sh!t leader. That's a fact. When you have problems at home do you take vacations or do you, like a grown ass man, deal with those situations? Trump Always Chickens Out. Thats what his Asia trip is. Make Asia Great Again homies!

"Everett Kelley, AFGE’s national president, wrote in a post on Monday that “both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight.”

“Today I’m making mine: it’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship. Put every single federal worker back on the job with full back pay — today,” Kelley said, adding that “parents, caregivers, and veterans” are working without pay and “struggling to cover rent, groceries, gas and medicine because of political disagreements in Washington.”

“It’s long past time for our leaders to put aside partisan politics and embrace responsible government. A strong America requires a functioning government — one that pays its bills, honors its commitments, and treats its workforce with respect by paying them on time,” Everett wrote.

Don't know about President Schumer, but that is my opinion of Senate Minority Leader Schumer.
He must be President if he can singlehandedly shut down the government. Its as if he controls all three branches of government. Oh wait, thats Republicans trying to pretend their not to blame for not being able to keep the government they have full control of open.

The filibuster prevents (unless there is a supermajority) one party from having full control over the federal government. Take a civics class.

It's one of the few checks and balances the minority has left.
I'm a big supporter of the filibuster and will fight to keep it but it should not be used to shutdown the gov't. A minority should not have that much power

Specifically in this instance the Dems want something that they lack the votes to pass. They can't get a majority of votes to support it, let alone 60. That's our system. Lots of political ideas fail to garner the necessary votes to become law. When that happens, you move on but you don't get to shut down the gov't over it. This is nuts

It's the hill they have chosen to die on and what their constituents voted for. And yes the minority should always have that power when they have the votes.

Minority should have the power to shut the gov't down with less than 50%? Gotta disagree with you there. That's a recipe for chaos.

One more thing, how can the Senate even bring up spending bills? Don't those things have to start in the House? If the House doesn't send them a spending bill the Senate can't vote on it

In this case the house has sent the senate a bill and the Dems using perfectly legal methods are blocking a vote on it. That power should never be taken away.

I really do not think you're as stupid as your comment here would indicate.

No one is blocking the vote. The vote will occur for a 13th time today

It shouldn't be this easy to shut down the gov't. It needs to be far far more difficult than 41%

No, it shouldn't be any harder to shut down the government. There shouldn't be exceptions to Senate rules just for spending bills.

the spending bill is the canary in the coal mine. that may not be the correct phrase. its the first issue that has been bad enough to get the publics attention in a meaningful way. the issue goes beyond the spending CR or additions.

we are looking at a whole system that doesn't work, that was grinding to a halt one way or the other. the CR is just the first item that the system came across that momentum didn't carry it over.

Congress should never be forced to pay for something just because other items are tied to it. this is how we ended up in the mess. line item voting and vetos would go a long way to fixing this. tie in a balanced budget amendment, so as they vote for funding different things, its clear what is, and isn't important.

IMO it should take 60 to shut down the gov't, not to open it.

We should do it like Germany does:

Germany’s law states that if the legislature does not enact a budget before the start of the fiscal year, funding continues at the previous year’s amount to maintain institutions, meet obligations, and continue construction projects, benefits, and services.

Shutdowns in our country are something new
