For the fire Banks crowd.

timing is really bad for replacing a defensive or offensive staff..

If you go to a bowl or the playoffs and you want to replace your coordinator for example, when do you let him go? After regular season? After bowl or playoff?

Then to go outside your staff and make a hire, new guy very likely wants his own staff to work with which means replace entire staff (defense for example).

Even do that after the regular season, you likely can't get a hire in place with a new staff until mid to late December.

That all butts up against the early signing period for high school / JC players. It also butts up to the portal signing period starting January 2nd.

Huge risk when replacing staff that the following might happen:

1. Lose commitments to that side of the ball before signing day.
2. Lose returning players on that side of the ball to the portal in January.
3. How effective can new staff be (assuming all are in place) in going out and getting portal help?

Come to think of it, these factors might be playing into why coaches are getting fired so early this year... so adminstrators can begin back channel communicating with potential replacements.

Seems things are really messy with timelines.

Not concerned with a new DC bringing in his own staff. Garner is the only one I would personally care to lose. We ( including me) thought we stole Inge from Bama. I’ve watched 3 Michigan games this year and we definitely got the short end of the linebacker coach situation.

What gets me is now they say, well we knew McCoys recovery would take this long, then why did they not pick up some DB's in the portal? Did they think he would play the last 4 or 5 games of the season? Now he must play prevent to protect this weak secondary. Banks has left himself with few options. He can't coach without players. His offseason moves are what I am complaining about.

because, the players that they pursued or look at were not as good as Gibson, McCoy or Hood BUT they wanted more money than they were paying the other 3. Those that would take less money, were not as good (in coaches estimation) as what was on roster. The same is true at the Safety positions...

I'm not either. I'm just saying new staff or not, replacing coaches disrupts your ability to sign recrruits / portal players due to all the timing of things. they are not just going to sign with unknowns in December or commit in January to unknowns.. You have to be willing to know you risk a hit to your roster when you change coaches. IMO

Freshmen can tackle. Perlotte says hello.
Perlotte has lived up to his high school highlights and appears to be our fastest linebacker.i just wish Shaedy Hayward had made it here he’s doing the same at Florida in the few games I’ve watched.

Do you think he forgot how to coach in one year? Last year half here were afraid he would leave for a head coaching job.

It has a lot more to do with the players on the field than many want to admit.

The Tennessee Vols defense in 2024 was outstanding, finishing sixth nationally in total defense and seventh in scoring defense, allowing just 16.1 points per game. The unit was characterized by depth on the defensive line and at linebacker, improved play from an overhauled secondary, and strong performance in key metrics like third-down defense and tackles for loss.

Key takeaways
  • Overall performance:
The defense was one of the best in the nation, holding 10 of 13 opponents to fewer than 20 points.

  • Key rankings:
    • 6th in total defense
    • 7th in scoring defense
    • 3rd in third-down defense
    • 5th in yards per play
    • 10th in run defense and tackles for loss
I agree......some of those players were so good that they overcame piss poor scheme

I will not defend him. In 5 seasons, last year was the one and only good showing on defense. And that was due to acquiring 2 great CBs through the portal.
Then, when said CBs go down, we see the serious lack of recruiting and development. It's absolutely GLARING.
Terrible...

Banks is responsible for player evaluation, player development and scheme on the defensive side of the ball. Our product on the field this year has been atrocious. Tackling has been poor, confusion in the defensive backfield and linebackers in pass defense (in particular zone coverage) too often leaves opposing receivers wide open. Defensively we are a one trick pony. We rush up field aggressively and hope something positive occurs (sack, TFL or a turnover). At times this works but good offenses (and even poor offenses like Kentucky) have picked us apart. Banks is accountable for all of it. I wish we would move on. He was successful last year with three 6-year seniors at DT, a first round talent a LEO and an import (that he didn't have anything to do with developing) in McCoy. Heck, I would have been a defensive coach of the year with our roster last year. He evidently coaches the safety position and over 5 years it has been one of the consistently worst position groups on that side of the ball. Our defense is "soft" which is about the worst adjective you can have in football.

Heupel's loyalty is both one of his most admirable qualities yet also a quality that can be detrimental. We need better coordinators and assistant coaches to win a SEC championship and realistically have a chance to compete for a national championship. Up to him to make that call. But in my opinion, if you aren't getting better, you are falling behind. The SEC is relentless, and I don't have any confidence that our defense can stop anyone when it matters. This year, next year and beyond with Banks as coordinator.

I’m done with excuses for Banks. Explain last years Ohio State game if our defense was elite.

What I would like to know, is how does Martinez continue to get a pass? Under him (both stents) our DB’s give up plays at terrible times and if he doesn’t have elite talent (not just this year) they are atrocious!

Am sure we will have the opportunity to retain him or let him go, with all the coaching changes.

sjt18 indicted Banks imo with the following, "He has more talent than Vandy who fields a solid D." which is a fact. I watched Vandy last week hold Missouri with a goal line stand, Vandy for crying out loud!! Banks is not going to do much better this season, the hay is in the barn. so to speak, we are what we are. It's time for change too many good people are out there and available to improve and shake up our defense for next season. LSU has a pretty good D, not a bad time to look there.

I do think the 2024 Defense was smoke and mirrors as well. It was good but was it elite? I remember Ohio State and Georgia throwing all over it and making the defense looked bad (Georgia didn't put up a lot of points but they definitely had their way on offense against Tennessee).

Ohio State made our 2024 ELITE defense look silly and incompotent. My thinking in 2024 is that we were up against teams that played bad on offense: Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, UK, Miss State, etc. all were mediocre offensive teams that year.
We’re never going to get a schedule like that again and catch that many teams when they’re down. Same reason why Heupel won’t even be mentioned with any of these coaching openings.

Yes, is short on personnel.

Which doesn’t begin to explain why the personnel he DOES have haven’t been taught basic skills like how to tackle.
There is little doubt that they have been taught. Most seem to have been unable to escape the bad habits they learned in High School. I believe it is execution, vice lack of coaching. We need LEADERS on the defensive side of the ball. We need a Al Wilson, to get in the face of his team mates and embarrass them.

The defense last year was lead by a great group of pass rushers and lineman, then their weak secondary benefitted from an unusually inept slate of QBs they faced from Jaxson Arnold to Jalen Milroe.

Banks is not good and his schemes are terrible plus the safeties he coaches are the weakest link in a bad defense. He also doesn't recruit very well. The quicker we move from him the better, unless people enjoy the 14 play, 93 yards drives.
Correct. Just ask yourself, what player has improved as the year has gone along? I really can’t think of one.

Sometimes you have to rip the bandaid off.

If coach fires Banks (which I doubt will happen) who do you believe he would hire as the new defensive coordinator?
