For the fire Banks crowd.

Like it or not, attrition IS a huge factor with the problems in our defensive backfield!

McCoy - out!
Gibson- out!
Thomas - out!
Thomas - to Miami!
Hood - Banged up!

We have to stop pretending that doesnt affect our production. We have been forced to play a lot of freshman that simply werent ready to play. Some of which haven't even been on campus a full year! These guys are coaches, not magicians!
Every school has to deal with injuries and attrition. Good coaches prepare and account for that. They also recognize deficiencies early. We have been in desperate need of upgrades at safety for some time. He should have been pushing to get a safety out of the portal especially after the flip of that highly rated safety recruit to florida.

Well 98% of you are morons and do not understand college football then. With the Kelly firing, there are 9 major college openings. There will be more. For the ‘fire Banks!’ ‘Fire CJH’ crowd, where do you think UT would fall on the list of potential replacements? Definitely behind PSU, LSU, and UF……and all these schools will be throwing around crazy $s for coordinators. And all those schools that will loose coaches to all these openings will throw around money to replace them.

Our defense has a lack of talent. The middle of the DL is not good (and shallow depth) ; the LBs are slow and the Ss are bad…..and we lost our top two CBs. If Banks schemes to help stop the run, the secondary is on an island; if he schemes to help the secondary, the DL cannot stop the run…. there is a lack of talent more than a coaching problem. Eight games in, this defense is what it is. Firing a coach isn’t going to make it better. It would only put us behind the eight ball in finding a replacement (given all the open positions) and would hurt recruiting. Recruiting and the portal is where the focus should be.

Do you think he forgot how to coach in one year? Last year half here were afraid he would leave for a head coaching job.

It has a lot more to do with the players on the field than many want to admit.

The Tennessee Vols defense in 2024 was outstanding, finishing sixth nationally in total defense and seventh in scoring defense, allowing just 16.1 points per game. The unit was characterized by depth on the defensive line and at linebacker, improved play from an overhauled secondary, and strong performance in key metrics like third-down defense and tackles for loss.

Key takeaways
  • Overall performance:
The defense was one of the best in the nation, holding 10 of 13 opponents to fewer than 20 points.

  • Key rankings:
    • 6th in total defense
    • 7th in scoring defense
    • 3rd in third-down defense
    • 5th in yards per play
    • 10th in run defense and tackles for loss
Who is responsible for ensuring a steady stream of talent in the pipeline and filling gaps with the portal?

Defensive ranks for this year:
Passing defense 122nd
Rushing defense 54th
Total defense 99th
Third down conversions 70th
Fourth down conversions 121st
First downs against 119th
Scoring defense 112th
Red zone defense 123rd
Passing efficiency defense 110th
Team sacks 6th
Team tackles for loss 7th
Fumbles recovered 2nd
Defensive TDs 1st
Pass interceptions 66th

Pretty bad. Still highly ranked on sacks, defensive TDs, and fumbles recovered.
Getting sacks on 2nd down...good. Giving it up those sacks time after time on 3rd and long....Very bad.

Our Worst position on defense is safety, his guys!!!!!

My lead? Look at today's headlines. Coaching staffs getting fired as we speak. Leashes are a lot shorter now with all the money involved.

And you are on here complaining after a 3-score win and a 6-2 record with both losses to playoff-level teams. Get a grip, man!

Does the team have deficiencies on defense? Of course! It’s obvious. But most teams have deficiencies and coaches have to game plan to win around them. Heupel and Co have proven to be quite good at that.

Edit: And I’m not going to dispute that Coach Heupel should absolutely gave a hard and fair evaluation of everything and everyone in the program, including Banks. But that is for later because, right now, this team is in the hunt. Let’s enjoy watching to see if we can score enough points in each game to overcome the defensive deficiencies. Because they are what they are at this point, and I don’t foresee any significant change.

Good to great teams don’t put up with this. Sacks and TFL don’t matter when your getting gashed for chunk plays on the 8 snaps between them. The roster is garbage behind the line. Time to find someone that can insist on tackling, get them lined up in the right spot, and make plays. The dregs of the SEC get 500 yds per game against us. Let’s hope Heupel is on it for next year!

A Coordinator in College football today should be a borderline Genius. Do you see that up in the coaches booth? Do you hear that in an interview? Do you see that in the product on the field? If you answered yes, then banks is your man.

I never thought I would see Napier, Kelly, and Franklin fired in such a brief window of time, and in mid season even 😳
I wonder what those three buyouts add up to?
About $120 million…insane yet schools are gonna continue signing contracts with huge buyouts because they fear losing their coach to a rival. Jimmy Sexton is the best agent in the world!

Not sure about the moron part and there is a lot of emotion shared on the board that is sheer frustration.

Existing D needs continued development across the board. Youth, again, is huge challenge here.

There is a bit of concern with the defensive strategy or approach. There has to be more pressure on the QB going forward - Period.

I’ll be in attendance Saturday night and hope the crowd keeps the noise up because we will need everything working 💯!

For those wanting Banks gone, the best way for that to happen is for him to take a head coaching job…

Yes, is short on personnel.

Which doesn’t begin to explain why the personnel he DOES have haven’t been taught basic skills like how to tackle.
The true glaring issue that bears complaint. Tackling/Tackling discipline. Solve that issue immediately, and fixing nothing else we will get opponents back down to 20 ppg.

Tell me how defenses like Missouri or Vanderbilt have more talent than Tennessee? It is schemes. Our play-calling/schemes haven't been great either.

You're entire last paragraph shows the reason people are pissed about the defensive coaching. All of those areas are the failure of coaching. If you cannot recruit talent then you start out behind the eight ball. If you cannot teach players better than what good is recruiting. Where's the development of players on the defense? If they don't come in outstanding does that mean they have no chance to get better under this staff ? It sure looks like it the way they play zone defense.

Who recruits safeties and LBs? Year 1~3, I would give you that excuse. This is year 5. If you don't have the players in here, that's on you.

No excuse for the poor tackling, poor pursuit angles, and poor coverages this far into the season. We've had a spring practice, fall practice, and are over halfway into the season, and it is not any better now than it was at the start of the season.

Banks coaches safeties. Why are they bad?

Great post. I don’t think Banks is as bad as ppl make it out to be, he simply doesn’t have as good as players as last year.

Good point. I waffle back and forth on Banks. Who you think we should replace him with?
Anybody who won’t send lbs 15 yards deep in zone at the snap on 3rd and 2 on a big drive in a big game against a rival during a 7 minute td drive or allow 5 td passes and career days by players who are average qbs.

Pretty sure 98% of fans don't give a rats *** about last year.

And I am in the 98%.
DO NOT challenge the rationality and intelligence of our entire fanbase like this. It seems your math skills are as good as your football analysis skills.

Those that make lots and of declarative statements and forego getting analysis from the more connected in root cause of the obvious issues can easily fall prey to this shortcoming.
