With so many big openings, it’s reasonable to consider someone may come after Heupel

However, has he done enough at Tennessee to warrant you paying $50M+ to fire your current coach to get him?

Not so sure

If he had his current Tennessee record at Miss State - maybe. But Tennessee is a major program.

I’ve enjoyed the Heupel era and think we still have big things ahead. But not sure the big names will want to poach him.
you'd be mistaken. oklahoma or florida would gobble him up in a minute

I just got through pointing out earlier how absurd the idea Brian Kelly would negotiate his buyout was. Looks like I'm not the only one. Tom Mars with a funny quip.

We have seen this now multiple times. UF just did it with Billy Napier. I have never understood it. How can you negotiate a buyout? Why would any coach agree to it? Unless I could show mathematically that I would come out financially better by altering the amounts or terms/structure of the payout, there’s no way I would agree to be paid less.

LSU, UF, Penn State, [insert current vacancy here], would 100% take him if they could. I guarantee he’s on all their lists of people to potentially call/look at. I imagine we see Heupel get a bit of a pay bump by season’s end.

I don't know what you saw on Napier, but the way his buyout was structured he got 10 mil up front and the other 11 mil paid out over however many years he was signed for. I forget how many it was.

So is this something that normally happens and we just never hear about it? I guess I’m confused as to why BK would even consider that? I’d laugh in their faces as I tell them who to make the check out to.
Sam Pittman met Arkansas in the middle. But not every coach is Sam Pittman either. I think he got a raw deal in the end from Arkansas. They set him up to take the fall and to install Petrino. Right now they are busy making all the other options appear unattractive to Arkansas fans.

I think it’s like the lottery. Do u want $800,000 per month or are you willing to take less than the full buyout for a payment right now.

The $800,000 would be mitigated if he found another job. The flat sum agreed upon would stay.
Yeah except those terms are typically going to be mostly dictated by the original contract I would think. I’m curious how much reworking of the terms there could actually be. Plus, whatever the fired coach would want is probably the opposite of what the booster funding the buyout would want.

Ultimately all comes down to a time value of money question. Simple math. Though I’d be curious if there’s any non-math negotiations that could happen? I dunno. I’d be like yall want me gone pay me my damn money and don’t call me again. I’m officially on permanent vacation until further notice.

The buyouts have:

-Term and payment amounts over that term.

- Stipulations on how the buyout changes if you get another job.

Both of those could be renegotiated. But I think the word "Restructuring" makes more sense than "negotiating".

I just want to illustrate where the temperature of the Florida fan base is right now: on their 247 board someone posted simply, "James Franklin will be next head coach at Florida," and he's been downvoted 16 times.
Bring me all the Florida board posts! Heck, start a whole thread! Just tell me what forum you post it in.

Lol. James Franklin is built for big time college football. That goober knows how to be a CEO of a major college football program.

What he really needs is to go be an analyst somewhere. Here, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oregon... And figure out how to bring his offense from 2006 to the present day. He did that, and he would be an extremely dangerous candidate.

Would still win a lot of games bringing his 2006 offense to Florida.

I can’t believe they haven’t thought about this yet honestly. Can they not understand they have a ton of youth, and the kids might do better if their coach is on the sidelines face to face with them all game? They should have been able to look at the film and realize that is when our defense was best all year.
You know, I'm not Tim Banks, but I figure Josh Heupel and he both have to ask themselves if there is any reason to change the formula that was successful last year?

I truthfully think fans are overreacting to how badly we've played on defense. I don't care what the metrics suggest. I saw a guy people sent a lot of criticism that made little sense to me make a huge play on defense Saturday and not many people admitting they could have possibly have overreacted regarding his abilities as a safety. I mean, it's crazy when we are talking about a staff that has sent safeties to the league. And look at how we recruit at safety!

I think most of the difference between the fact that the defense put up such pretty stats last year, versus this year's results, is probably fairly closely correlated with the lack of success of the offense last year versus the relative success this season. I thought we remembered how much stress this offense puts on a defense when it's humming. It's why we all clutch our hearts every time Warren Bennett has a scary-looking injury on an extra point.

I could have sworn it was said they planned to negotiate it down, ala Pittman.
