Tennessee vs Duke (Exh) Official Game Thread - 7pm ESPN2

ZZ got a raw deal being denied an extra year and that punk Pavia got one
Pavia (and others, like Joey Aguilar and Miles Kitselman) got an extra year because they played JUCO, which isn’t governed by the NCAA so it isn’t NCAA participation.

There was zero basis to grant ZZ an extra year. He never played JUCO. The two situations aren’t comparable. He didn’t get screwed.

Brown looks like he’s going to be pushing all the post players to improve to keep their minutes - competition is healthy with this squad.
Watched him play in HS and knew he is very good but even I was surprised at how well he played yesterday - def going to get minutes this year.

Good thing is we're not a finished product. Ament and JG will settle in. I feel like JP will eventually make his presence known. I'm glad we have several cupcake games to open the season. Those will be ideal for sorting out rotations and building up that in-game intuition. I like this team a lot.

Barnes obviously doesn’t know what he’s doing.
My biggest takeaway from this exhibition was that Barnes experimented with many different lineups as opposed to the Duke coach treating it as a real game.I think Barnes and staff will mold this team into something that we’ll all be proud of. I love all the pieces that they have to work with.

It could be a down year this year but then again, I said the same about last year.

Even this "down" year will still likely have Tennessee competing in the SEC and dancing. I have that much faith in the Barnes system.

I like his effort on defense but I have no clue what he is going to accomplish on offense. At this point I'd rather play Berg/Abram
The hope I'm guessing is Burg improves on defense enough to be able to play beside Gillespie. Boswell can't be finishing for this team in March though otherwise it's going to be super clunky offense.

Agree on the statement that Duke played as a regular game. If the coach had used this game as Barnes did, we would have won by 10-15 pts.

We won’t win many games with Gillespie and Ament shooting a combined 10-40 from the field. I attribute it to first-game jitters and forcing more shots since it was an exhibition game.
Taking that into consideration along with being outshot 15 or so from the FT line and JP only logging 8 minutes, it could have been much worse. We took a shot to end the half with 15 seconds left up 8 with a chance to go into half with anywhere from an 8 point lead to an 11 point lead. They scored and cut it to 6 at the half. If we get those 2 points back when it was 73-70 with 30 seconds left, we would have only been down 1 and when they make both FT's, we had a chance to tie it with a 3. to me that was the turning point in the game.

I see Cade Phillips picked up where he left off last year, may not score a ton but he does stuff that doesn't show up on the stat sheets most times. Getting better defensively and hardly ever takes a play off

Ament and Gillespie went 10/40. The refs got Duke to the line 27 times. The game was still in doubt until the final minute.
I thought the refs were solid. Duke’s play got Duke to the line in all fairness. The Vols were no where near as aggressive in the second half. This team will be fine.
