We will have to average 50-60 PPG against OU, UF and VU

we are in a boat race with our own defense. like a man being chased by a grizzly except the grizzly is our defense lying on their backs all over the field like a bunch of rugs.

Heupel is supposed to be offensive Jesus, well we are going to need the second coming to survive the final 3 SEC games if we want to finish 10-2.
Our defense is tied for the most touchdowns 5 and up at the top in sacks. When our offense scores fast it puts pressure on our defense last year we didn't score much and had the dest defense. I think it's linked together.

I once thought we would definitely win out. Now I see no possible way. I get a sinking feeling OU will beat us like a drum. Their defense is legit and we won’t be able to stop Mateer.
I think we will beat OU, we are at home, but I think it will take at least 48 points to do it though. I am more concerned about Fla at Fla than OU

I don't think it's linked together. We don't play good defense from the start of the game.

At some point the defense needs to do something different. What they’ve done all year doesn’t work.
I think so to, change something. I would try blitzing more, we are not going to cover the receivers anyway, so maybe we can sack the qb, or pressure into a really bad throw. What we are doing is certainly not working.

it's called a boom or bust defense. we either get to the QB and get a sack or a turnover OR if we don't do that we give up a huge play.

I don't care. The defense is what it is. It will make a lot of bad plays, but it will always make positive plays that are statistically likely to lead to a defensive score or setting up our offense for a cheap and easy score.

We are at a point where our offense needs to play to their average which shouldn't be hard and the rest will take care of itself.

I don't care that Kentucky took a 75 yard swing pass to the house because our defense scored a touchdown. So Kentucky scored on 5 of 12 possessions while our defense took one to the house on one of the 7 possessions they didn't score on.

I will gladly take our opponents scoring on a net 4 possessions a game from here on out.

Hear hear!

Say it again for those in the back.

💯 correct. We either turned teams over or (if they have a decent to good offense) they score. Even tackles for loss is largely meaningless for this defense if it doesn’t lead to a turnover. We have had teams in 2nd and 20 plus or 3rd and 10 plus . . . And they convert and go score. The defense has also given up long drives for TDs on the regular. BUT, they do turn teams over quite a bit.

And we play much better at home. I like our chances to beat Oklahoma and Vandy at home. While UF is not a great team . . . It’s a road game.

You can cherry pick stats and possessions all you want but the reality is we aren’t good defensively. We are sitting around the rank of 100 defensively as of now. We ended last year 6th.

The occasional sack and turnover isn’t enough to make up those 90 spots. This is asking to much if our offense once when we play teams capable of holding us under 30. Like you said, it is what it is. We can’t change it. But to try and pretend our D isn’t bad is just silly.

I’m not cherry picking anything. I’m simply stating the facts. There is no reinventing the wheel or turning the switch on this defense. They will give up plays and they make plays.

The trend says the plays they make on defense will lead to points which negates giving up points.

I’m convinced people don’t actually watch games.

Tennessee has a boom or bust defense. we either get a sack or turnover OR we give up huge plays trying to do those things.

the only question is how many books do we get and can we score points off it. otherwise it will be a lot of big plays against us.

As fans if we can't celebrate a win then we are just living in misery.
We’re the worse. Fans have no direction, their Offense struggles against facts and their defense is very weak against common sense.
I say fire everyone on here.

Offense and defense are absolutely linked together.

And actually we did play good defense at the beginning of the UK game. We forced a punt after 16 yards for the first drive and scored on a pick six the second drive. If that was not starting good at the start of the game, I don't know what your definition of start good is.

It was actually the second quarter where the defense allowed 2 TD's on two subsequent possessions. Before that UK had the ball 5 times and scored on one - we forced turnovers on 2, an interception and a fumble.

If you all are going to complain about the defense as least look at what actually happened and NOT the final score.

I don't think it is that folks don't watch but they have an opinion and a desire that specific coaches are fired and that makes them see ONLY what they want to see.

And I’m convinced people like yourself can’t be realistic with yourself about certain aspects of our game where we are lacking.

The reality is we aren’t going to be gifted an interception for a TD every game. I can tell you 2 games where we didn’t have interceptions for TDs. Georgia and Alabama. We know the outcome of them. I watch enough to know that.

I never once said we would get defensive touchdowns every game. So first off, quit inventing words.

Our average says we will get multiple sacks and force multiple turnovers per game. At best, we get defensive touchdowns on this turnovers. At worst we punt and do nothing with them. The median is we get points off takeaways via defense taking them to the house or our offense getting the ball in a short field.

Im sorry you haven’t watch any of the games to recognize this. It literally happens almost every week. Which is exactly what I said and you claimed was “cherry picking”

defensive touchdowns is just one metric, even if it's a good accomplishment. we have what I call a boom or bust defense. we go after a sack in hopes of a turnover and if we don't get home the offense shreds us for huge gains. and our tackling just sucks in those situations we don't wrap people up and we don't tackle in space well.

so it's cool when 1 out of 10 or 15 times we do something awesome like strip the QB and run for a TD, but that gets outweighed by the 14 times that we let a team in 3rd and long get 20 yard gains on us (or something similar).

Ohio State on the other hand is way behind Tennessee in sacks and defensive scores but they are widely considered maybe the best college defense anyone has ever seen. why? because they don't let the other team score points. that's the job of the defense.

Right now our ability to win hinges entirely on our offense being able to outscore what our defense gives up. which is not normal for UT defenses of the last few years.

We will just sit tight and see where this top tier defense of ours lands us for the rest of season.
