Tennessee Lady Vol News

Interesting story I heard on afternoon WNML sports radio, and it relates to Tennessee's media event for the Lady Vols earlier this week.

Will West was telling the story about how he learned Vitello was leaving Tennessee, via a message from someone inside the UT athletic department. One of his sources texted early Wednesday morning saying that Vitello was out. They said that "Vitello is leaving for San Francisco" but also added "I'll bet you any amount of money you want that this news is leaked during Kim Caldwell's press conference today." And as West pointed out, sure enough, the Vitello news came out at 1:01 PM, one minute after Caldwell's press conference started to kick off the Lady Vols media day.

Now, this isn't to stir the pot, but since it was a local sports reporter and not just some random Twitter handle, I found it worth recounting here. I hadn't really noticed that the news overrode the Lady Vols' media day, but admittedly, that's because the only thing Knoxville media talked about Wednesday was Vitello leaving. I also hadn't really considered just how completely that news erased the press event, but, well, here we are.

It certainly casts Danny White's response in a different light, I must say. Makes you wonder what else White had been trying to deal with behind the scenes in terms of personalities, especially with Caldwell and company making such a huge splash last year.

Like him or loathe him, Will is not a rumor monger. He actually is cautious in presenting facts while being plenty comfortable in expressing his opinion.

I tell you what a few VolNation LV fans take shots at WER for posts like their top coaches list but nobody wants to talk about how last night LSU Head Coach used Coach Caldwell’s substitution pattern. They tried to say it’s an exhibition game… okay we’ll see. I think as small as LSU is as a team size wise they will have to play a lot more players and wouldn’t be surprised to see them using mass substitutions.
Also, first time I’ve ever seen an NBA team make a 5 in and 5 out substitution tonight in the New York vs Boston game.
Coach Caldwell is the real deal..

Crazy Talk. Kim Mulkey has never used mass substitution in real games as a strategy and will not use them this year. If you think Kim Mulkey is going to model her strategy to a second-year power 4 coach that finished 8th in the SEC last year, you have completely lost it. Kim Mulkey is a Hall of Fame coach who has 4 national championships, has brought 2 programs out of the ashes virtually overnight (LSU and Baylor were bottom feeders when she took over), and has the second highest all-time winning percentage of all active D-1 Power 4 coaches, and that is second only to Geno Auriemma who has 13 national championships and plays in a crap league. Kim Mulkey has always moved to the beat of her own drum and will continue to do so. Mass substitutions because Kim Caldwell does it. Get out of here lol

Yep. Exhibition scrimmages do not signal a trend or change of philosophy.

Somebody got a scratch to itch? Mulkey will hook you up! She is pretty good at that social media thing, too.

Ya think. Mulkey has been playing Leon Barmores philosophy sprinkled with some Pat Summitt philosophies for 20+ years. When you win at the rate she does, im sure she lives by that old farmers quote, "if it aint broke, don't fix it." She is predictable, but she wins. We should have enough firepower to beat them this year, but it will be a tough game, and Mulkey won't be subbing 5 in 5 out every minute 30 seconds, and I'd bet the farm on it.

WER?

As much as CKC has impressed me with her recruiting skillz and ability to implement her various unconventional, forward thinking philosophies, i just can’t honestly put her at the top of that list.

Cute as a bug list? Absolutely.

I will say this: Even with her far more vaunted roster, Kim Mulkey came dangerously close, TWICE last season, to losing to a young upstart who truly had no business competing with her with the roster she had and in her first season as a P4 coach. But Kim Caldwell DID make Kim Mulkey sweat twice. It wasn't a fluke, and Mulkey knows it. So laugh at Knox if you want, but I have a strong feeling Mulkey is going to demand special energy from her team when preparing to play Tennessee this season.

I actually do believe we may soon see more coaches begin to experiment with the philosophy Kim has brought to Tennessee.

The Massey computer has us ranked as the number two offense and the number 34 defense. I am sure a lot of that is based on last season. I need to see that defense be in the top 20 at least this season.
That's interesting because so much of our offense was generated by our defense. I guess other teams' offenses operated at a pretty high level once they got the ball into the front court? What am I missing?

Do you think there will be enough elite talent available to allow many teams to do that? Not disagreeing with your statement.

I watched the 2025 Uconn/Tennessee game two nights ago on YouTube to start getting me hyped for the upcoming season. I had a thought while watching that game that wouldn't it be nice to see Janiah Barker relive Candace Parkers infamous dunk off a steal while at Uconn this year. That could take Janiah from grad transfer to legendary or iconic status in the eyes of lady vol nation over night. Not sure about any of y'all, but im down for it.

I get your point. We agree. They can’t laugh at Knox because that stuff don’t exist to me. With that being said, the fact remains. Coach Caldwell was put on this list by a person based on their opinion. That wasn’t my list so I couldn’t care less about someone taking issue with it being said. It was a well-informed opinion. That can go both ways, yet my post(s) weren’t up for debate. The argumentative responses that spark these petty dialogues never get removed from the thread while straight to point fact posts do… so I don’t waste my time. So be it. Coach Caldwell system is/will be utilized in some capacity by other SEC teams including LSU, WNBA teams, and NBA teams.
GBO Rocky Top is rocking 🍊.

I think it would be nice to see her contest some drives to the basket late in games.

I also watched that game a few nights ago. I’m not ashamed to admit I got teary eyed when we went on our run in the second half. When Sam Spencer truly gave her all for Tennessee and took over the game for about two minutes with her defense and passion. That arena had not been that loud in many, many year.

Don't know their system for rating teams, but they rate our offense just a fraction below number one offense Sc. Defense 34 all this I am sure is based on last season they have no numbers for the current one.
