Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

I disagree, with the playoffs expanding just making the playoffs every 2-3 years is not enough. He needs to play for championships every now and then.
Heuple-thetical question for ya.

if you had to choose one, would you prefer entry into the cfb and playing for championships every 4-6 years or yearly playoff appearances?

Playing for championships every 4-6 years. I’d rather finish the season off with a FL bowl game win than another OHST experience

I agree, The Hype is a good coach but he’s not a Natty winner.
you guys are just instant gratification millennials wanting championships now.

there are what, three active national title coaches right now? you can be one of the best and not have a title. and one of those doesn't look good and Heupel beat him when they were the "better" team.

Phillip Fulmer, who inherited a MILES better program than Heupel, played against a far weaker SEC, had been on staff, got a partial season to get a heads start, didn't win any titles in his first 4 years either. if we gave Fulmer 5 years to win the SEC, we need to give Heupel some more time before saying he can't win anything. Fulmer only beat Florida once in his first 5 years.

Georgia is flat out better than us, and this was the first year the results didn't match that reality, in a good way. They are still miles ahead of us talent wise. I don't think there is any mistake with this being Heupels most talented team, and us taking Georgia to the wire.

Bama is still miles ahead of us on the talent front too. Heupel getting this team to play up to them is still something that most coaches aren't going to do. Talent wise we weren't dominated, we just beat ourselves in that game.

We are still 11th overall in talent, we aren't walking around showing up to most serious SEC games as the most talented team.

Heupel is closing the talent gap. going 50/50 with teams like Bama and Florida isn't terrible, and its miles better than we were. he has to break thru the Georgia bubble, but based on results it looks like he will do that.

This is embarrassing for you crusty old pessimists. Louder is more objective and rationale than people almost twice his age. And he really isn't known for reasonable opines.

Yall should feel badly right now. Especially you, hog.

Championship coaches get better and better and their teams get better, call it however you like, but he’s in year 5 and he hasn’t and that’s a fact. And his game management and clock management sucks nuts all too frequently. Maybe I’m too greedy, but I’d like championships and maybe beating a rival on the road once in a blue moon.
lol, we are definitely better than we have been. and most of the places we are worse has a reason.

OL play is miles better, even with the musical chairs bs against Bama, this is the best OL we have seen under Heupel.
WR play is better even with a bunch of first time starters with drop issues.
LB play is better. yeah its not great, but its better, if you aren't seeing improvement you aren't paying attention.
QB play is definitely better.
RB play hasn't missed a beat.
DEs are still good and borderline great, but not getting the help they need, see CB and DT below.

CB play in the past was atrocious, the only reason we are bad this year is because we lost both starters for the season. No team is going to look better after that. and even still CB play in '25 looks better than any CB play we have had except for in '24.
similar story on DTs, we are worse because of injuries. Arkansas was the first game both starters played. and I am pretty sure Hobbs wasn't even good enough to start.

TE play took a step back, not really sure what the problem is there, but sure FAHR Heupel.

safety has been the only consistent weakness. but given the improvements we have seen elsewhere I am not overly worried.

these guys would have fired two of the three national title coaches for not being national title winners. most of them still have a man they need to beat.

it took Dabo 8 years to win a national title. 4 years to win an ACC championship, and another 4 to win a second. and that was the ACC.

Ryan day took 6 years to win a national title. and he still hasn't gotten over the Michigan hump.

JoeDawg would know better but Smart won the SEC in year 3 I believe, but it wasn't till year 5 that he won the national title, and he still has the Bama bear on his back.

most expected a 9-3 type season

The UGA and Bama games were just nut kickers
I hate we lost the uga game. we did not get beat, like we did with bama. we straight up just beat ourselves. with that said, I think that is the best, or one of the best games, we have played under Heup. If it is possible to have a favorite loss, that one is mine.

you think we can win out?

It's his 5th season and he's still making the same mistakes which are costing us games we should have won. This isn't a case of instant gratification, we should expect to be in the top 10 every season and be able to compete with anyone. Take a look at Tony V, he took a worse dumpster fire of a program and in his 4th season made the world series (3rd season cancelled). It's not expecting too much to The Hype to have us at least in the SECCG in year 5 or the CFP semis?

I'll say it again, I think The Hype is a good coach but unless he makes some staff and philosophy changes his ceiling will always be 9-3/10-2 and an early exit from the playoffs.

What philosophy changes should he be making, O wise sage of athletic endeavors?

Why? I can be optimistic when given something to be optimistic about. The Hype can be that guy if he make the necessary changes to the program I'm just not optimistic that he will.

1. Stop playing not to lose when leading in the 2nd half, keep doing the things on offense that got you the lead.
2. Use more play action and RPO
3. Scheme our big tight ends to be matched up with safeties or LBs across the middle
4. Stop using screens so much

Defense isn't Hypes ball of wax so I'm giving him a pass on that except to say he needs to do something to improve the secondary and LB play.

I'm gonna love this convo. Lot's of data to digest.

Your #1. In an article published after he Bama game in 2023, CJH is 22-1 when leading at halftime. The only loss was the preceding Bama game.
google ai says this:
AI Overview

Between 2021 and 2024, Josh Heupel's record when leading at halftime was
33 wins and 1 loss. His Tennessee Volunteers teams lost only once after having a halftime lead during this period: the 2021 Music City Bowl against Purdue.

Obviously some discrepancy between the two sources but we can say his record is stellar.

Question: why should he change his philosophy with that type of record?

Because even though he has won he allowed way too many of those teams to claw their way back into the game and make it close.
